Dance Teams

There are barely any [if any] post about dance. I think Magoffin has excellent teams. Any comments about any of the dance teams?

Magoffin is the only Hs that i know of in the 57th district that has a dance team unless Lawerence co has one. But yeah they are pretty good!

Phelps and Prestonsburg both have teams. Prestonsburg is very good as well. Phelp's team is good but they didnt seem to have many tricks.

I agree. Dance Cat's are good but they've had a dance team for as long as I can remember. MC has had one for 2-3 years now and in my opinion are doing an EXCELLENT job. I think that all of the dance teams such as MC, Phelps, Dance Cats and the rest are all very talented though!

I seen Phelps perform this year and thought they were really good. P-burg Dance Cats use to pretty much dominate as far as dance teams go. Magoffin County has a good dance team now and have seem at their elementary level that they have some good up and coming dancers.

Prestonsburg's dance team recently won 1st place at Dance Super Nationals in Cincinnati. This was their 11th national title.

The Dance Etc. Elite All-Star teams out of Dance Etc. in Prestonsburg also brought home 4 National Titles, 2 second place finishes, a 6th place and an 8th place trophy

I haven't saw much this yr., but Phelps has a really good dance team! They won funk and pom dance at the all "a" competition. They are great team!

Letcher County has a pretty good dance team from what I've seen of them. I admit that I don't know anything about the rules in a dance competition so I can't say who I think is the best of them all.

Prestonsburg's Dance Cats used to be really good but they have fell apart in recent years, but this year they are much better. I saw Phelps this year and they have one guy on their team and they are really good and so is he, but the best I have seen is Magoffin, they are awesome. They have a lot of great looking girls and they are good.

Dancers have a better longevity. Girls that come out of high school can make it on college dance teams very easily. I know some cheerleaders that dance on college squads now becuase they didnt have the tumbling skills for college cheerleading.

phelps has the best dance team that i have seen in the 15th region... they have won back-to-back championship in richmond and also they won a national championship at myrtle beach last year

** I agree with a lot of these posts. Phelps, Allen Central, Magoffin, and Prestonsburg all have great dance teams. You can tell they work hard and they HAVE FUN while they're dancing.

** I think PCCHS's dance team has great technique. Their turns and jumps are amazing. But I NEVER see a smile on their face. Yeah, they win competitions and they have cute routines, but they can at least have fun with it.

** And they are SO conservative. They don't "shake it" at all. I know that people don't want to see a lot of that vulgar stuff, but it gets boring just doing motions and turns the whole time while the dancers are looking at the ground. grr

** They're not like other dance teams and dance to mixes. Our team only dances to the band music, except in competitions. I don't see a lot of other schools doing that.

** I love our dance team to death. They do things different and it goes good. They just need to smile pls!!

For the last two years, Estill County has had an awesome dance team. They were cheered on at halftime, while the cheerleaders were boo'ed off stage, as aweful as that is. They are a big hit in Estill. I don't know their outlook for this year, but I look for them to be really good.

We are thinking about winterfest (mac art center). Last year the divisions were combined. This year I saw a post were the divisions were different. Hopefully we will because the girls really had a good time there and it is really great when you get to compete closer to home and others can come out and see ya. This past weekend we were at the expo and there should have been a lot more local teams in the competition in both cheerleading and dance. We have a lot of great talent in these mountains but it seems people do not want to show it off anymore. Lesson to be learned - more people come to these competitions besides family and if you plan on going on in college to cheer and dance, you need to get your name and face out there to be known. Make a name for yourself and the rest comes somewhat easier.

In the 58th P-burg has a really good team! They are all very hard working & dedicated. In the 57th Magoffin has a really good team as well. I know a few of the girls on there & they've worked really hard to get where they are.

Yes. Last year we (MC) entered Winterfest where we placed 1st in every category as well as Smoky Mountain Dance Competition where we were Jazz Division Champions. This year we're entering numerous competitions.

Imo Phelps Has A Great Dance Team . I Don't Know Who Has The Best Team Thou But I Do Know Its Not Pike Central I Heard Its Because There Coach Won't Let Them Do Alot Of Moves And Other Stuff Some Of The Other Teams Do And Thats Really A Shame Because They Have Some Girls With Alot Of Talent Like The Coachs Own Daughter Go Figure Anyone Know If This Is True If Not My Bad.

-Pike Central is a little strict on what they do. They only dance to our band's music at games, except for Hawk Night when they perform the traditional Micheal Jackson routine (which is really entertaining). The only other time they dance to recorded music is when they compete. They are not a bad team at all.

They have TONS of talent, they just don't show it off. But I do admit that they need to smile a whole lot more!!

I saw Phelps perform tonight and they were wonderful!!!!!!!!!! I knew they had brought home a few trophies from Gaitlinburg and I would have to say they were well deserved!!!! Wasn't that Nationals? They were good last year but I think they have outdone themselves!

Even though Assumption is a larger school they still usually have only 12-15 girls on their team are in the top 3 every year at UDA nationals which is the largest school dance nationals in the country. I would love to see Phelps attend Jamfest Super Nationals in Cincy next year to see how they would fair agaist more competition and stronger competiton than they saw at Gaitlinburg. I attended it this year with my all-stars and there were some amazing school teams especially in the hip hop category. Recently Magoffin captured the Bluegrass Classic State Championships High School Varsity Jazz and Hip Hop divisions (1st place in both) as well as OVERALL Grand Champions (beating 2 college teams) They will be performing at the District games as well.

I think Estill has had a good dance team for the past 3 years. I think when coach Beverly Hall first took over things started to change. That year the girls went to 2 competition and DOMINATED! So, still I stand behind them and I am not even a dancer!
Havent seem them this year, personally, but heard that Bev isnt coaching anymore and they aren't as good as they have been in the past few years. But I do know the last couple years they rocked!! Everybody in the crowd, even the opposing fans, loved to watch them, they were a hit. I believe there was one compo that they were in their own division, so they of course took the trophy, but even better they got the trophy for most creative dance of the day!!! That is a really honorable trophy, considering the girls on the team coreographed all of the dances that they did.

In all honesty, I don't think any of our teams in the mountains can compare themselves with the likes on Manual and Assumption, not even the All-Star teams here. My sister is on the Dance Etc. All-Star team and they sit in amazement when they Assumption dance. Assumption is an all girls school in Louisville not an all star team... same with Manual. You have to go out of the mountains to compare yourself with the great teams in the state. those two teams have done that... and they aren't just the best in the state, but in the United States...

It's not being snooty when you know what you are talking about... I'm sorry to burst the bubble of so many people but I have been around REAL dance probably a lot longer than some of Phelps dancers have been alive. I know what is good, I know dance, and yes Phelps has a good team, but could not be placed on the level of the best teams in Kentucky because obviously you haven't seen those teams dance.

Sorry I was just going off of the past five years of going to the ASC, EDA, NDA, and UDA Nationals... maybe when they do overall yes, but as far as letting All-Star teams compete in your same division that's not how they do things. Sorry I was just going off of the past five years of going to the ASC, EDA, NDA, and UDA Nationals... maybe when they do overall yes, but as far as letting All-Star teams compete in your same division that's not how they do things. NOT doubting your "expertise" in the least BUT.... have you seen these girls?? ACTUALLY seen this dance team THIS year? They do NOT have anyone make up stuff for them.... THEY do their own stuff and evidently they are doing something right.... Bringing home National titles AND state Class A championships is impressive..... After all.... there is only a little over 300+ kids in this school and they have been National Champions for OH.... 2 or 3 years now.... and OH ..... the Jr. High team has also won the county championship for the past 3 or 4 years.... IMO.... Phelps Dance is going no where but UP!!! AND... phsdancefan is correct.... they are losing 1 girl.... 1.... and are gaining a couple off the Jr. High team..... Gosh.... I can't wait!!!!!!

I saw them dance at KCC at the Mountain Classic and last year at WInterfest... it's not the fact that they aren't good, I said they were... but you people act like they are the only dance team in Eastern Kentucky and the state. I know my sisters team, Dance Etc., has more than there fair share of NC's... but no one ever gives them credit... and parading around here saying your the best when clearly you haven't seen other quality teams. Of course when you compare them to what is in the mountains you are probably one of the better teams, but I'm coming from an objective view, which many of you aren't, Phelps is only one of many good but not great squads in the state.

And don't mistake me saying that Dance Etc. is the greatest because they aren't, and you will never see me comparing them to 360 Dance, or Assumption, because they can't hold a candle to them. and yes 360 is a All-Star team, but Assumption is not, and they make up their own routines to... you should watch them on ESPN when it comes on.

Yeaiwent on google and typed in assumption dance team and looked at the video's and yea it is a totally different style of dance, if you like that styles i guess its ok but i prefer the more energetic style myself. If you in to Jazz or ballet then its ok its all into what you like

i can't see to many standing ovations with that style, just like down at richmond at the class A state competition i saw a team do that style of dance and no one looked interested in it and there wasn't many people who clapped for them and the ones who did it was like ok glad that was over

This is all getting so crazy. These are kids we are talking about and it seems more adults are yakking than the kids. Each dance/cheer team does the best they can. These kids have nothing to prove to any but themselves and if it is not good enough to please some then so what. I don't care and neither does my daughter, who is a phelps dancer, what other peoples opinions are. (Like the old saying goes -like another body part, we all have one) If some people do not stop yakking, I promise it will make all the kids second guess themselves, no matter what school they are from. Trophies and titles are great but the true feeling of a winner is within the dancer or athelete. And Phelps knows it is a winner. It would not matter if Phelps never won a title or a trophy--- they are the best because they give the best. These kids excel in school, dance, cheer, basketball, football, golf, volleyball, softball, baseball, track, community, and family. They are great kids with great talent. We do it all because we have too. We can not pick and choose who gets to play what sport because our school does not have the enrollment for it. I just want all dancers to know - you all are the best if you give the best. :1:

I just wanted to give some recoginition to some teams in the area that have some great accomplishments. Dance Etc in Pburg has been around for 10 years. In those 10 years they have won 24 National Titles including 2 this year so far with another national competition coming up at the end of the month. Dance Etc started with 1 team of 20 girls in grades 3-8. They now have 77 girls spread out over 4 teams and range in grades 1st-12th.

The second team I would like to recognize in Pburg High. I was fortunate enough to be a member of the team when they won all of their titles in the late 90's and take great pride in what we did for dance in eky. We are the reason why many schools decided to start a dance team. Since 1997 they have won 12 national titles including NDA National Champions which is one of the biggest nationals in the country. Their most recent title came just last year at Jamfest super nationals in Cincy.

These girls on both teams are some of the hardest working girls I have ever met and they deserve to get the recognition they deserve

I think the Shelby Valley dance team deserves to be mentioned as a good dance team in Eastern Kentucky. They were very dominant back in '98 and '99, but then the dance team was cut from the school's athletic programs. Just this year they have organized a dance team again and are not dancing with the band. These girls practice for 2, sometimes 2 and a half hours a day, 3 days a week. They put a lot of effort into what they do and I myself have to say that they are looking very good as the season goes on, doing their floor routine 2 times at the district championship games. Shelby Valley's dance team will be back on top sooner than later, watch out for em!

I havent seen very many dance teams this year performing except for Shelby Valley and they were pretty good. This team is small but entertaining and they really got the crowd into it with them and to me that is what its all about entertaining. I have seen this team perform all season. They were at the fooball games and at the boy/girl basketball home games and even the tournaments. My hat goes off to all dance teams because they put alot into it and they dont get the credit they deserve but I have to say Shelby Valley doesnt get recongized for having a dance team and I personally want to thank Shelby Valley. THANK YOU SHELBY VALLEY DANZ CATS FOR ENTERTAINING US ALL SEASON LONG. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. :thumpsup:

Magoffin has the best I've seen, they are always in sync and are very entertaining to watch. Anyone know why JC doesn't have a dance team? I know about 4-5 yrs ago they had one and had around 18-25 girls on it but the next year it was gone. I've heard many girls around school say they would love it if they had one.
