When did they make it legal to play zone in the NBA?????

You used to not be allowed to play zone in the NBA, the first time the refs called it, it would just be a warning, then the second time, the offense got a free throw and the ball. It used to happen a decent amount, now teams are allowed to play zones

They got rid of illegal defense and put in the defensive 3 second rule. I never understood illegal defense, but they tossed it out a couple years ago.

While I think the NBA is just one-on-one anymore, and no team ball, I kind of think the no zone rule kept it honest. Defensive 3 seconds helps I guess
