Matewan, West Virginia was the site of Saturday night's 11th Annual Hatfield and McCoy Bowl which pits the best recent graduates in Eastern Kentucky against the best from West Virginia. It's always a battle, but this year, the two teams took it literally.

West Virginia, known as the Hatfields were leading 32-19 with 2:55 left to play when the game was suspended due to a fight that broke out. Both teams had been jawing pretty hard throughout game before tempers broke free. Dave Shaffer of Prestonsburg was tossed out along with Anthony Perrin of Logan in West Virginia.

sSme players did put up some good numbers before the game was suspended. Matt Maynard of Belfry caught 4 passes for 108 yards and 3 touchdowns. Dave shaffer tossed 2 TD passes and was named offensive MVP for the Kentucky side. Jordan Phillips of Belfry threw a TD pass. Ron Blume of Johnson Central had 3 catches for 118 yards. And Steve Thacker of East Ridge was named defensive MVP.

West Virginia now holds a 6-5 edge in the series all-time, and have won the last 3 in a row.

Batpuff, that was Jimmy Coleman #11 DE from East Ridge who was named defensive MVP. I thought Kentucky was weak on the offensive line this year.

How did Maynard not get MVP. I left the game early cause it was like watching paint dry but before the radio went off the air they didnt know who the mvp's were but they were sure that Maynard from Belfry would get it.
And your right the Oline and Dline both were very weak. That was the worse KY team I have ever seen but with the way this thing is ran I wouldnt even go over to Matewan to play in it. They are all kinds of nicer fields around the area to have it at.

I think this game is a bad idea. It is way too late in the year to expect last years seniors to play football in 100* weather. This is just my opinion.

I played in this bowl when it was known as the K- bowl and held in Williamson Wv. I think that this has become a Matewan Bowl to reunite their former players and coaches. We need to find a way to get this back and quit giving Matewan all this money. I think any area coach could have chosen a better team, but no one wants to take the time. Maybe next year I will try to coach the Ky squad.

This is not an opinion because I didn't even bother to go. Its usually a joke where it used to be a privlege but I have heard A LOT of people say that KY could have chose a better team!

i think they did pick quite a few good players.. but there were a few they got, that were questionable.. but who are we to really sit back and take from these kids something that not everyone gets to be involved it.. let them soak it up.. for a lot of them it's the last time they ever get to put on those pads and play

It is suppose to be Eastern Kentucky vs Southern West Virginia, because in the past the players had to be housed in the area. This is the reason they dropped the game in Williamson, becaue of lack of housing for the players. Some of coaches started getting players from Louisville and other parts of Ky. and West Virginia started getting players out of Charleston and Huntington. It was an honor to be chosen on this all star team and still is. The problem is one week is not enough time to practice for this event. You need at least ten good days of practice for this event. The problem with this bowl is the location, it needs to be moved.

Is the fighting a trend or just something that has happened thisd year? It really does not make the kids from that area look too good if they fight all the time. That being said, I am talking about both sides, not just the EKY. side.
