Don't be shocked at the score. If one thing that you learn from Haywood is that scrimmages are scrimmages. Belfry looked a little slow tonight, but give Johnson Central credit they can be a dangerous team this year. Belfry will be a contender in 2A this year. I will even say that the winner between Belfry and Russell will WIN 2A.

The reason that this shouldn't shock you....2 words....PRE-SEASON!!! Pre-season scores in any sport are worthless except for coaches and teams to get a good idea of what needs to be worked on. Both of these teams will be very good!! Belfry always starts slow. It sems like every year in the PC Bowl people say they are down, then by mid-season they are the same ole Belfry!!

Belfry needs work regardless of a scrimmage just being a scrimmage. JC looked really good on both sides of the ball and Dials from JC ( LC transfer ) had a good game.

I would love to see JC make some noise down state. They have a tough AAA region but they showed some promise last season just hope they can keep it up!!

Sounds like Johnson Central is what i thought they would be. Although I can guarantee you that the Belfry team that you saw tonight at the scrimmage is not the Belfry team you will see come district play and come playoff time. JC shows balance in its offensive attack and will greatly help this teams chances of going where they have wanted to go for a while. Keep it up Eagles!

Yes that is true. Johnson Central sounds like they are going to have a heck of a team this year. I look for both Belfry and JC to make a run this year.

Belfry never has a good showing in preseason.

Im sure Haywood looked at alot of different players in positions too. If you ask Haywood 2 min's before the end of the teams last game of the season he'd tell you "We're still working to get better, there's some areas we need to improve in." His mind is always working.

Belfry looked really lathargic. J.C. picked them apart with the pass. JC did score 4 td's but the last one had a yellow hanky in the middle of the field for an obvious block in the back. But none the less J.C. looked really good. Lots of respect from both these squads for each other.

So true!!! I saw 2 from lawrence county, 1 from P-burg, and 2 from logan wv which will play J.C. later if I'm not mistaken. Scout coaches that is.

Hey gang...both of the state chmpionship teams looked bad in the preseason too...so this year's "mindset" is no different than from years past...the main thing in a scrimmage is to get better...and to evaluate individual personnel so as to find out who can play where..some coaches treat them like the Superbowl...the Belfry staff treats them like scrimmages..always have...just like they treat the summer passing leagues...Belfry may have NEVER even won a single one of those things..they DO need work...have big holes to fill...and filling them with young players takes time..

You are so wrong my friend. We are just telling how it is and has been at Belfry for many year. We will be ready when the time comes. Preseason doesn't go down as a W or L. Belfry will use this as a learning tool and that is all. They will be fine when the season starts.

Making excuses??? Wow...nice try pal...I guess you count scrimmages as part of your team's win-loss total...if I am not mistaken, JC has beaten Belfry the last three times they have scrimmaged..I'll take playoff wins over scrimmage wins ANYTIME.

I agree. Like I said I know for a FACT that Belfry doesnt play all of its starters in scrimmages and i am a JC follower. When I played for JC a couple years back we always beat Belfry in the scrimmages but they always had better seasons than we had. This is used to determine where you team stands and where the team needs to improve. I think both teams are going to be very solid teams this year but the Belfry followers are not making excuses i assure you that cause i played against them in this scrimmages for JC.

Yea really...... When another team plays another team
you have to be jack up wanting to win. my god it is in full pads people going 100 miles an hour. I would want to win everything from passing game to football game.....I guess I have a win attiude.

Preseason is a learning tool at Belfry. We save the winning attitude for the real thing.

I'll say this: as a former lineman, Belfry REALLY needs to work on the O-line. They were just porous the other night. When your QB gets hit faking a handoff on a play action pass, something is way wrong. Also, the RBs weren't really running THAT hard. I don't know if they were just slow in the heat, slow in the preseason, or if they've slowed down this year, but both Maydo and CC looked a lil sloppy compared to last year. Phil looked great though. I'd have liked to have seen more of Heath with the first string offense, but I can't take anything away from how Phil ran when he had the opportunity. He had a great run and would have scored but barely stepped out.

Defensively, we did well other than against the pass, and 2 running plays. Either JC scored on the run, or we shut them down completely. IIRC they ran for 2 TDs, and all the rest of their running plays were stopped at the line or behind it. Also, they exploited a certain sophomore DE who shall remain nameless, but who should have been pass rushing and not covering recievers in the first place.

TBH though, I was only disappointed in the O-line. Now, if JC has 3 or 4 first team D-linemen when all state is announced, then I will not be nearly as disappointed in the big guys then as I am now.

If any of our O-linemen read this, I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings. Advice I'd give you is to work on being quicker off the snap. You should aim for hitting the D-line while they are still in their stance. Do that and you own them, no matter how much they bench, squat, or weigh. Get Ryan in the groove of calling plays on something other than 1 to help you out. If the D-line anticipates a play on 1 and you always run plays on 1, then they've taken away your 2nd biggest advantage. At least they still don't know yet where the ball is going though. Also, gotta hold 'em up for a little bit on a screen pass. I always counted to 3 in my head.

I've heard MANY people make these comments about our line and talking about how our QB couldn't do his job because of No blocking. But I also hear they have been doing great at practice and that there were a few last minute changes and they do use these games as a learning tool soooo they shouldn't get their feelings hurt! Just keep learning and keep getting better!! Im thinking they'll be just fine!!

Oh my gosh!!!! This is preseason! Our boys have been in full pads for 2 days. This is not an excuse for the preformance. It is a fact! Everyone knows the philosophy of the Belfry coaching staff. Their concentration is on getting better everyday and peaking at the right time. Belfry has yet to start school and haven't been able to get into full pads as much as the schools that have already begun classes. These type of threads start every year with the bashing but we can rehash it let's say around.........Thanksgiving when Belfry is deep into the playoffs. Not after 1 SCRIMMAGE!

I'm just gonna say this....Belfry is BELFRY...don't ever count them out!

On the other side....JC looked good....looks like our new guys are growing into their positions.....Didn't that #17(wink,wink) streaking to the end zone bring back wonderful memories!

HEY, HEY, HEY!!! Belfry will be fine! Why would anyone judge their whole season on one pre-season game? I am a Johnson Co. fan but I also know BELFRY! They will be just fine and it is my opinon that they will play for a chance to go back to the carpet. GO BELFRY!

I think Belfry will be fine,no Belfry does,nt have the speed of the last few yr,s, so that being said I think that they will have to go backto 3 yards and a cloud of pellets , not the big play, mix in 8 or 10 short pass plays to keep other team a lil bit off balance and play hard nose defense as usual and I think they be in the hunt come playoff time. Go Big red.

Everyone knows that Belfry plays everyone. No matter what the outcome of the game is. Just like Sheldon Clark does. These games let you know what you need to work on.
