I'm starting a new thread for this discussion. Keep it civil and discuss the game.
West seems a little down this year so It could be a close game. I'll take West by a TD.

Ok West is really sucking...and when they are up on a team 16-0 at half and come back to let them score 31 points in the 4th quarter to lose...I'm gonna take Powell. Every body is back this week...#11 qb/linebacker, and #8 tight end/lineback. I'm taking Powell on this one by 2 TD's.

I coached at Powell a couple of years ago, We were 10 points away from being 7-3.
16 points away from being 8-2. The only 2 games we didn't have a chance of winning were Russell and Flemming. Coach Jones and I still talk weekly and the man gives his all to the football team. Powell has a couple of really good linemen in Shriner and Elam.
I've coached at 4 different highschools and Shriner is as good as I've coached. I will beg to differ about the line will be better with new line coach statement. The o-line I had only lost the battle up front in 2 games my last year at Powell. Look at the films.
Even against Russell, We held our own on the l.o.s. Until they get coach Jones some experieced help at position coaching and give the guy the all around things he needs to have to build a program I dont forsee a big improvement right now. If they get behind him, Give him what he needs, Experienced coaches, Support, Yes I do believe he can start the building process of a program that has never had even had the foundation layed. Coach and I are working right now on getting a line coach back for next season and believe me you'll be ready to play. It'll be **** but you'll ready for the war in the trenches and noone will intimidate you. Powell can win Friday in a close game. You'll lose big or win close. Powell county 24 and West Carter 22

Even against Russell, We held our own on the l.o.s.
Just asking an honest question. I was there for all 3 games and the scores were: 03 was 50-12, 04 was 48-22 and 05 was 42-12. How did Powell control the LOS in these games? I am trying to get your honest opinion on this.

Sorry to disagree quickstep..but i dont think that the outcome of the game is going to be by 42 points just because of the return of #11,although i do believe that powell is going to prevail in this one..28-21.As long as everything is clicking and everyone is focused..Powell SHOULD be the victor.

I was there in the 48-22 game, Was my last season. To us scoring 28 on Russell was a moral victory. We didnt control the l.o.s but I felt my line gave everything they had and never let up. Russell was great, Had the Gross kid playing tailback. Russell exploded on us early but we never got our heads down that game. When I graded my linemen I was really surprised how well they played that game. Im not saying we won the battle with the line, I'm just saying I felt we never backed down and held our own on the line.

Ok I understand. In the earlier post you said you controlled the LOS. I see that you are saying that your boys never gave up. And that's really all you can ask for from a team. That team with Gross was tough. Heck Gross was tough all by his self. Was that game in 04 in the rain?

I believe so, Gross broke one for round 60 on the first play. How would you rate Gross in the top backs ever from Russell? Gross had a natural field vision, He could always find the lane through traffic. We were down 28-0 early. That year we really felt we would be in the playoffs. The Powell/Morgan game was a 7-7 tie going into the 4th.
We held them on the 2 yardline 4 in a row. We ended up getting a punt blocked for a morgan td that cost us that game. We had East beat right up till the end of the game as well. West started off 3-0 that season , We played them game 4 and beat them 20-12 at West. We had that monster qb that year, Big Stew, He was like 6-5 230. Im telling you if coach Jones sees all this smack being taked by Powell players, He will take care of it. #11 knows better than to get on here talkin all that stuff to West or Russell. Coach Jones wont tolerate it.

As far as Gross goes I believe that he is the premier back to ever come out of Russell. If he was a bit bigger he would have went D-1 easy. I saw him the other day and he looked like he has out on about 15 lbs of muscle and says he feels great. I believe that he is either 2 or 3 on the depth chart at Georgetown.
As far as the smack talking on here. I'm sure if Ivan got word of any of his boys doing that he would deal with it. I'm sure Coach Jones will do it as well. I'm looking forward to seeing #5 the RB from Powell to see just how good he is.
I have a son that played a bit in that game and played the first half in last years game. Sadly football is over for him he dicided to go to NKU and get an education.

I don't know anything about 5. This is his first year I do know. Their center 78 John Shriner started for us as a soph. He's an exceptional lineman. If you go to the game check out their big left tackle, Harlan Elam, He's a man child, bout 6-3 300lbs.
These 2 really stand out on the line. They got a solid te in Sebey, Heplays basketball as well. Coach Jones had a very good tailback in Blackford who started last year but transfered to Clark.Coach really bragged on Rice at qb also. Powell is very shallow at skill positions this year and don't have alot of speed. Coach is doing the best with what he has. I think the o-line as a whole could be much better, They really do have a couple of really good linemen.
I think that Powell will win this one

I'll definately be at the game I only live about 2 miles from the stadium. Elam should match up well with our right tackle/man child Seth Harvey. He's a 6-5" 330lb sophomore. :yikes:

Shriner is a HARD hitting lineman/LB..i know from experience. Harlan is a very big kid for his age and has alot of potential.Hopefully we will see him at the next level in a few years. As for blackford, he could have been a standout at PCHS, but personal/family reason's kept him from playing. Due to the return of more experienced players this weekend..Powell should see a victory friday night!!!:redboxer:

Best of luck to Powell Co and hope you bring home the win.If im positive..Blackford is not playing football at GRC.Reason being maybe from a very good source that he was supposed to move back to Powell, during that time practice had started for both teams so he decided to sit out this season.

This will be a very close game. After watching the Rowan vs. West Carter game i see a good game in West this friday night against Powell. But imo its goin to come down to who wants it the most in practice this week and who works harder, not who's coming back for powell because i'm pretty sure that powell will take the same starting line-up that they've had all year, no qb changes or anything, just my opinion.Powell is goin to have to step it up this week in practice for there is no guarentee in a win even though West looks weaker than previous years.

yeah i agree wit bill its who ever wants it. the boys at powell are due and they are going to step up after the win with phelps and hurt players are comin back an #2 is doin a good job but #11 is back an going to step it up and is going to get the team ready to play an #5 is a state leader in rushin he'll be there to play i say powell wins if the running game gets goin an he rushes over 100 yards. #2 an #11 both passin a very confident win

who do u think has this one?
me personally think powell is going to come out on top...the coaches are workin extremely hard for this team and will do anything for them..if the team plays to their full potential then they could possobly crush west carter i have seen some of the games this year and powell has played with the other teams not really giving it their all but they have the potential to beat most of the teams in their district. #5 has had 2 of the 3 games over 100+ rushing yards and a game with 200+ he almost has more yards than our rbs last year at the end of the season

Powell Co has their work cut out for them. They need to play smart , cut way down on the flags and play with the heart I know they have.If they do all of these things ...still believe it will be a close game, but with their heart they could pull out a huge road win.
Best of luck in the game guys.

West is lookin at powell as a win i can bet you that. They treated us terrible 2 years ago before the game. Wanted to fight and taunt us before the game I was there. Im not complaining or insulting west cause thats just football and trying to get the mental edge on us before the game even started. We stayed focused, didnt' let them get in our heads early and we beat them up there breaking there 3_0 start. No way powell blows out west but if they keep their focus and get the little things done they can come out ith a win. Coach and I talked this week and the game plan against west is solid. You cant look at a west carter as a lock for a win but you can play resposibility first football and have a shot at a W. If everthing works out the way coach and i have it planned, Powell gets its first winning season next season. Coach Jones made the gutsyiest call i ever saw agaist estill 2 years ago on a qb throwback play. Estill had us down 11 points with less than 2 minutes to play, we won that game.

Shriner, Elam and Howell are the linemen that stands out. Elam can play some college ball if he gets another good year in the weight room. He's gonna have to work on technique but Ill fix that next season. Coach has said his o-line is the weak point of his team this season. Not coaches fault, He simply cant cover every single individual positions. I can help guys like Elam get to the next level and coach J wont have to worry about the o line at all. I cant wait to get big Elam, Ledford and Howell next year.
They have tons of potential and size.Im not impressed with king at all. If he didnt drop alot of weight he couldnt play o line for me. I remember on board drill when elam was a freshman he dominated king, king gave up too so he got to go run the hill while we finished our drill. It's in the works for next season and Coach is with me 100% on this cause if the o line cant get it done don't really matter whos in the backfield.

why are people always dissing powell? they aren't the best in the world right now, but things change... in past south floyd was on our level and they smoked us in the scrimmage... if the guys have it in them, they can do well... i have seen the enthusiasm in them this past couple weeks and they are ready for west tonight....
with the coach experience... not everyone is given the oppurtunity to play high school football... so if they can't play high school, then do you think scouts want them for college? the only way to get experience is to get out there and work with it... this year the team seems to have found something to work for and even though they may not make a dramatic change in one season, if they keep up the way they are going they will do great...
good luck to both teams tonight and lets bring home a win powell!!
