I believe they can do it, BUT they're gonna have to get past Belfry first! I think NCC will battle Danville for the state championship this year too
I also think Lex. Cath will battle Bowling Green again

Russell needs to worry about CORBIN and Belfry needs to worry about MBORO. Goes to show why we play the game at all. anyone has a chance at this point in the playoffs. Yea I would love to see Belfry's new stadium but that is a week away from worrying about it. Will Russell repeat for the state............dont know yet. Belfry, Corbin,Larue,Middlesboro, Mercer, Owensboro Cath and Trigg may have a say in the end....

Just one I think. Most of us realize that we have to get past Corbin first. Then the state semis. Some just think that because we won the first one since 78 last year that we are automatically entitled to going again.

I had a parent last year tell me that when they win there championship next year that this years won't mean as much. Some people don't live in the real world. It is TOUGH to go back to back and most of us realize that.

Some just can't seem to adjust their maroon colored glasses properly.

Russell faithful and the Russell team are not looking anywhere but at Corbin Friday. There might be a couple Russell fans looking ahead but the vast majority know it's very premature and immature to look past Corbin and so on.

Agreed, I think this is the feeling of most Russell faithful who are realistic anyway. I know the team is not looking toward anything but Corbin and it would be very foolish to think it won't be incredibly difficult to get back to the championship. Last year should have convinced people of how difficult it is, remember everything that had to go our way last year. I could go on and on. Like I said, vast majority of Russell fans are not overlooking Corbin and certainly not overlooking Middlesboro or Belfry. That would be just plain foolish. But to answer the question, yes I do believe Russell CAN win it but whether they do or not is still to be determined week by week. The players and coaches know that and that's all I care about.

Very true if russell takes it one game at a time then they are dangerouse as they were last year. But if they are looking ahead as their fans are then it could spell big trouble for the devils,.

They have on heck of a road to get there. Through Middlesboro or Belfry. Both of those teams are hard and are explosive. And I don't think that anyone in 2A can beat Mercer Co but you never know.

As of right now Russell has to IMPROVE on some things if they are going to repeat. Don't get me wrong they have the weapons and the opportunity but they need to improve drastically on the kicking game or they will be packing there stuff early..

I agree. The kicking game has been pretty suspect as of late. I hope they can get it turned around by Friday. I'm sure they are working on it.

I will agree with fox sports on this one. Both schools were good before they were united. You can have a good team, then add several players from another school and that will make you really good. Look at the Belfry teams that won it. They went to state, but could not get over the hump, so they added several from WV and became really good and this is what happened to Mercer and they are really potent. I think if the coach can cure the fumbleitis his pirates have a good chance to win again.:PirateSho

I don't thnk anyone in 2A can play Mercer close, weather it be Russell,Belfry, Middlesboro or whoever. If Mercer dosen't win it all you can quote me and I'll admit that I was wrong but I just don't see it. I don't think anyone can play them within 21points in AA. Thats JMO.

Fox I agree with you. Mercer co is looking tough . There opponents combined record however is 48-66. But they have an explosive backfield. Everyone is a expecting Belfry/ Russell matchup. But you know Middlesboro and Corbin they are no push overs. If devil and pirate fans get too excited. It could be a Corbin /Middlesboro matchup in the regional finals.

I have to disagree with that comment. The fans have no bearing on the outcome. Now if the Devils and Pirates look past Middlesboro and Corbin then it could mean a Middlesboro/Corbin state semi final. No way that it could be a regional final. That is what we are playing for this Friday night.:thumpsup:

Whether the fans overlook anyone or not, I could care less. I know the players and coaches are taking it one game at a time. Russell's got a great coaching staff who I know doesn't overlook anyone. I don't think most Russell faithful are overlooking Corbin but there are always a couple who think the name across the jersey will win a game. The team knows they must show up and play well in order to win, period. The know Corbin is a very worthy opponent and could beat anyone on any given day.

I am sorry MR football, but were you in this conversation and was my reply directed to you,, THINK NOT,,but hey thats why this is free and anyone can post. The crazy thing is that the two schools that were consolidated are still going to there old school just play sports as one school now that is just crazy.

Like I have said in other thread Mercer County only has 69 players on varisty thats including 3 freshman.Russell has 64 listed as varsity without any freshman listed so for a 2a to have over 60 players. I think that speaks wonders about the football tradition.Another note Mercer has 200 or 300 more students than Russell and Russell almost has as many players.

No Hard feelings at all, You guys have a **** of a football team this season and I'd probabily put you Guys at #2 in AA. Mercer is just absolutley loaded this season and If I had to pick a team to upset them I'd have to say Russell or Middlesboro but they'll be awfully tough to beat. Anyway good luck at your run to a state title and hopefully you guys will prove me wrong.:Thumbs:

One kid from WV! The other two went to elementary school in Pike County! I don't count that as a transfer in! I will say Jones was true WV.

I can honestly say that I have not seen Mercer either in person or on tape. I am sure that many are like me and are picking with their heart instead of their head. I would love to see the East win it again but it will be tough. Of course someone like Larue could step up and be a giant killer like Ft. Campbell last year.

They have a lot of weapons at their disposal BUT they still have a lot of work to do to get there. Their kicking game has went from a key component to a key concern the last few weeks. If they DO NOT correct it then we will be talking basketball sooner than we want.

It can happen!
Russell will be tested by Corbin( courtesy of playing Rock and Bell) but I think they pull it out. Belfry would be big-time challenge as I see them beating Middlesboro, due to Middlesboro's non-exhistant defense. The thing that would help Russell the most is for a Mercer upset along the way. I would like to see a mountain team win it, But I feel Mercer is at least 14 points better than Russell or Belfry.
