View Full Version : The dunk shot and three point line

These are two main reasons that our young kids get screwed up early in their development. All across America ,,there are basketball goals barely hanging where kids try to hang on the rims.I go and watch little leauge practice and unless the coach is right on them,,,,, there chucking them up from beyond the 3 point line.Even our pros on the Olympic teams get a lesson in fundamentals from countries all over the world. We cant win a gold now and I dont look for us anytime soon.Cocky arrogant players with no respect for anyone outside our country.I have heard from birth that black players can run faster and jump higher than whites.Well someone forgot to tell the russians and the european players that. When playing teams over there they continually out quick us to most all loose balls. If you have a youngster and he lowers his goal so he can dunk or is shooting threes ,,,bust his ***!!!!

 You are 100% CORRECT on this one!!
What is worse is that the russians and europeans can hit the 3 point shot better than us too, so all that practice must not be helping us!!

we have no fundamentals.

My 2 reasons are not enough people who can teach fundamentals and the way the game is to be played. Too many internet and "how to coach basketball" book coaches. intstead of teachers of the game. When you see varsity guys who DON'T KNOW how to play man to man defense and what a L cut is or V cut, and trust me it's alot of that going on. In the mountains 5 and 6 grades kids forced to shoot threes because of a 2/3 zone that packs it in so they chuck it and screw up their form. Also now players are running the show, their is absolutely no discipline in MOST programs, there are exceptions. So I don't blame the 3 point shot or the dunk, I blame the coaches who can't teach it. You think coack K would'nt have taught the olympic team fundamentals if he had them when they were in 5 and 6 grade? When Magic, Bird and Jordan were playing there was the 3 point shot and the Dunk.

Should outlaw the 3 point shot in 3rd-5th grade.Few kids can make a shot like that, most just let it fly to see if they can make it.Most of the Pros are just worried about the money or why Reebok or Nike didnt sign me,its not about playing the game anymore like it should be.

Very true, but Magic,Bird and Jordan were old school playing the game like it should have been played.Thats why they are the first DREAM TEAM.

If our younger players were like Bird or Magic but their not.

I quess its younger players obsession with the dunk and 3 point shot than a simple pick and roll or playing defense or God forbide a bank shot.

Yeah, you can't leave out the BANK SHOT!!! How many people on hear have sit and watched (even UK players) just stand under the basket and shoot it over the rim or off the rim over and over (provided they keep getting the rebound). Why not just use the glass like they used to teach. It still works!
I don't blame the 3 or the dunk! It is just that the kids and even pros now days don't use fundamentals. It is all run and gun show off styling that is killing us. Like I said earlier the russians and europeans use the dunk and 3 and still play fundamental and disciplined ball and beat our NBA players. In fact, look how many europeans are now coming to the NBA. They then go back home and our NBA players can't beat them.

I was watching clips of Jerry West taking his man off the dribble and shooting a 10' bank shot,,,easier than a layup.Sky hook is out too, or watching the old Boston Celtics run a 7 pass fast break for a layup on the other end and the ball never touched the floor.Pure Art!!!

most kids see the NBA players dunking and throwing up the 3's. Every kid who loves basketball wants to grow up and play in the NBA and when they see people they lookup to shooting 3's and dunking they want to do it to

yeah and now nobody cares about the fundamentals they just want to juke someone or make a flashy pass

Basketball as we know was ruined way before And 1. Sportcenter is more to blame than And 1.

Everytime I watch that show street ball or whatever its called where players play no defense and basically are a cheap version of the globetrotters,,,,that is like big time wrestling on a basketball court. That is the worst form of basketball on the planet.

i don't know if sportcenter is to blame but and 1 i must agree because all you see them doing is walking and carrying the ball n makin nice passes

The reason I said sportcenter is because the only thing they show are the flashy highlights. I was around before there was a sportcenter and you had to watch the game. I'm not a And 1 fan either, but the seed had been planted long before And 1.

I kind of agree that the Sports Center Top 10 hasn't helped basketball because if somebody dunks on someone then it's most times #1. There deffinitely isn't enough emphasis on team play anymore. That is for sure. But even saying all that, if I see someone get dunked on or someone make a great 1 on 1 move I jump up and cheer too. And1 is a different story. All you see anymore is people trying to do these things they see on And1. If you do most of these things in a real game you will have more turnovers than points. Well, thats if they call it. These And1 guys look real good in how they play. But thats the only way they can look good. As far as I know only 1 And1 player has made it to the NBA. These guys look awsome throwing it off people's heads and all that crap. But sometimes on And1 they'll have them playing against NBA players. And it's never any NBA players that you're heard of but they always get beat by the NBA players. It kills me watching kids trying to copy And1's syle of play.
