I want everyone's feelings on this...do u think it is ok for parents to force a child to switch schools when he is happy at the current school and doesnt want to switch if the reason is for sports only? Nothing but sports is the reason for the switch.....thanks

No, it's ridiculous that parents want to live through their children like that and it's sad that it happens.

So true Alf
Parents tend to be sad on the whole, when it comes to issues like that.
Or putting them in beauty contest, insist they run for everything.
Most Coaches will tell you if they just had to deal with kids its the greatest job in the world, but the parents can make it a living ****.
I had a friend that who sent his son to 3 different grade schools and 2 high schools.
Do you think his son really ever got a chance to fit in?

If it is the parents decision it is ridiculous, but you hardly ever find it that way..

Whether it's the parents decision or the kid's it's completely ridiculous. Sports will just get a kid popularity or maybe a college scholarship, now don't get me wrong a college scholarship is fantastic with college being sooo expensive (trust me...I know!). But none of that is going to do the kid a single bit of good if he can't add two plus two so to say. I think academics should come first before friends and defintally before sports. Now don't get me wrong, I love sports...I played all throughout elem., middle and high school but I know alot of people who all they focused on in school was sports are what are they doing now? Nothing, they aren't even going to school because they couldn't handle the classes which is sad because that's their future. Sports are great but only if the student can get a beneficial education along with it. If the kid was transferring to a school with better academics then that's great however, most students blow off education these days. I think if someone transfers schools it should be based solely on the quality of education they will be recieving and once they are in at that school THEN look to sports. Trust me, I went to two different schools in middle school (granted the 2nd school I went to bypassed the 1st in academics hands down) and in high school I also went to two different ones but I didn't go because of sports, I went because I would've been better able to concentrate at a different school than the one I was at becaue of personal issues I was having at the time.

I did it for sports..If it could make the difference in a $125,000 scholarship..IT IS WORTH IT!

I agree with DT.
A scholarship would be work a simple transfer. Play your senior, maybe junior year, for a good team, stand out, get your education paid for BUT how many people get those scholarships?
I've witnessed kids switching just for sports MANY, MANY, MANY times, as early on as 4th grade-11/12th. I've saw parents push their kids because they were never the star that they wanted to be. I've saw parents push their kids because they thought that they would get a college education.
But look, people in this area who get scholarships, which aren't that many, go to schools like Pikeville College. Not D-1 schools are they? A scholarship to Pikeville is great considering that tuition is a bazillion dollars a semester but you can get there and just as much money, if not more, through academics.
Every kid that plays sports thinks that they will earn a scholarship. I played basketball for 7 years and had it alllll figured out. I'd go to college on a basketball scholarship, until my basketball 'career' went down the drain.
I would rather be known for brains over brawn anyday...

Its a shame for a parent to do that. First and foremost focus on the childs education. Thats the most important thing they will ever have in their life. So if they switch schools, only for Academics and Academics only.

I could see transfering my kid to a school with better athletics. But not at the expence of their education. And face it folks...there are plenty of schools around here that choose athletics over education. Look at the cats scores!!! But if you find a school that has better sports and education programs than what your child is at at the present, then why not transfer!!! That is in better interest!

Parents should have a right to transfer ther kids anywhere they want. Its their kids! Everybody thinks they know whats right for someone else. More people should get them some business and when the get it they should mind it. Every situation is different. My kids are not old enough yet, but when they do I will do what I think is best for MY children. Obviously, academics should be first. But, there are kids who don't play sports and don't transfer that do bad in school, so every situation should be judged on a individual basis. Since people are going to judge anyway.

I have said it before on this thread and I'm going to say it again. Sports is great but it isn't everything and it SHOULDN'T come before a child's education. Yeah a child may play sports and be extremely good in high school and he may get a free ride to the college of his dreams. That would be fantastic but one question, if the child focused on sports and nothing but sports all his life what he is going to do when he hits college? Sure they have tutors for the student athletes but tutors can't do it for you, the child would fail miserably and then guess what...bye bye scholarship. Unless you have a child that is the next LeBron James or something then education NEEDS to come first. If you compare all the kids playing sports who is suposedly the best in their high school region to how many actually go Pro and make a career out of it the number of those making it is extremely small. And still anyone's career can go down the drain and if you don't have a college degree or something you can fall back on then what?

The topic was about moves just because of sports! I think it is terrible that a parent would move a child that is happy with their current school just because the parent has an agenda based on sports. If there are other reasons than sports then I would support a move but that isn't the case here. I agree that what is best for the child is important, but if it is all about sports it not in the best interest of the child. I have a question for you. Would you pick a better sports program over a better academic program just because you are a parent that likes sports and want your child to stand out on the field or court? I do agree that every situation must be looked at in the big picture stance, but sports will never overcome my child's happiness or her education.
