View Full Version : Some Clarifications About Letcher Central's Gym

It seems like there have been some things to wonder around on here that is completely not true about Letcher County Central, it's gymnasium, and their hosting of the 14th region tournament.

The gym capacity:
What gives people the idea that Letcher County Central doesn't have the capacity to host a regional tournament? They have been approved by KHSAA to do so. I'm just wondering, where are people getting that the capacity for the gym is 2,500 people? That is entirely not true. I was on the committee to help design the high school and I assure you, that is false. The gymnasium was built and approved by the fire marshall to SEAT 3,500 people. There is also enough balcony standing room for 200 more. That is 200 more than the capacity for Hazard and Powell County even though KHSAA has it at 3,500. They do not account for the balcony, but the fire marshall does. As far as parking is concerned, the site is also capable of hosting a regional tournament. There is parking on 4 different levels of the campus with shuttle busses running throughout all four levels.

Is this the only time LCC will get to host?
No. That was an old rumor that is entirely false. KHSAA had requested an estimated seating capacity for the gymnasium while it was still in planning. That estimate was at 3,000 people. KHSAA told them they would not be able to host a regional tournamet. As said before, I was on the commitee to help design the high school and I clearly remember the superintendent pushing for the gym to be increased to have the capacity to host both boys and girls regional tournaments. It was then that they went back to the drawing board to increase it to 3,500. I assure you, KHSAA has approved Letcher County Central to be in permanent rotation for the 14th region tourney.

The clearing of the gym:
This is only for the semi-finals night and is not due in part to seating capacity. If it were Hazard and Powell would have to do this as well. This was done in part to better accomodate the fans when their teams are playing. At the end of the first game, all of the first game fans will have the lower arena and most likely will remain there for the second game. This would leave the second game's fans in the upper arena nowhere close to their team. This is just giving the fans a chance to simply have the best seats possible to watch their team. People who wants to stay for both games can pay 7 dollars instead of 5 and have their hand stamped. This will allow them to go into the lobby after the first game, stand momentarily, and then be released into the gymnasium in a special line with no pay, no waits, no anything. Other regions have done this before and have found it very effecient. Personally, I don't like it myself. This is the first time that Letcher Central has got to host, they just wanted to take precautionary measures to ensure the best experience for all fans. After this time they will have everything "ironed out". Personally, I do not think this will happen in their next rotation.

They held the opening rounds of the tournament tonight. Everything went well. It was very organized from the parking to the security, and even the concessions. THE SEATING WAS FINE. The food is outstanding, and the hospitality room is unlike any other I have seen. There are big screens in the lobby and in the hospitality room for viewing the game while stretching or getting something to eat. I love the starting line-up announcements. They turn out all the lights and have music playing (they probably have the best sound system in the region. If they wanted to they could shake the walls down in that place) and spotlights shining while the starting line-ups are announced. It really helps the players and fans to get into it. Overall I feel Letcher Central has done a fine job. Yes, they have some things they need to iron out, but they have done fine.

My biggest problem was with the fans from the two opposing teams sitting on the same side. I don't see why they didn't have them across from each other. Before the game the cheerleaders from both schools were lined up in one straight line trying to cheer and you couldn't hear them because they were all right there together yelling different things. You also had 2 bands on one side. There didn't seem to be any student pep section jumping up and down the whole time like at most games. And I heard that students had to wear shirts so that pretty much did away with getting painted up. I want to know why Hazard's "smurfs" weren't at this game...they rocked at District finals. I enjoyed the game but I was disappointed with the fans having to sit on the same side of the gym and I thought the tournament "atmosphere" could have been better.

LCC deserves the opportunity to play host to the region. I know Oz Jackson and he will have things going in the right direction. This is a big event to stage and of course there are going to be a few problems but what place doesn't experience some of these things when the they host for the first time. It is a beautiful facility and one that the 14th should be proud of. The only drawback as far as the site is that Powell County has to travel so far but they did play there in December. I like the idea of running the shuttle bus groups. Smart.

I attended the game last night was impressed. Everything seemed to run smooth!! I agree with Blue-N-Gold I didnt like the teams playing each other sitting on the same side. Does anyone know the reasoning for that. Very nice gym!!

Letcher is doing a fantastic job hosting the tourney. Anyone who had to go to Jenkins for the district will agree with that.

Why limit it to just two Arby's man?I would think by holding it in as many venues as possible--it would only enhance the tournament. It brings new and fresh ideas as to how to run the tournament because every school will try to do a few things differently. If you hold it in only 2 don't you think that they would become a little complacent as to what they do each year. I like the idea of each host trying to improve on the services offered to the public as well as the players. For example-- I would like to see an additional "Hospitality" room for players only. It would give the kids a chance to mingle and get to know the kids on other teams in a non-competitive setting. Of course it would have to be well supervised for those few "hotheads" that are unable to leave the games on the floor---but I think the good stuff would far outweigh the bad?Agree?

I agree with the people from Hazard. I would like to see the opposing teams on opposite sides. I will definately make a proposal to Letcher Central's athletic director concerning the issue. I think it would make things much better. But overall I think things are going fine!

I was really impressed on how smooth the parking went. However i also think the two opposing teams should sit on opposite sides of the gym... That is probably the dumbest thing i have ever seen. Well... close lol.

I think this year's regional tourney has one of the best atmospheres I've seen in the 14th. The gym holds more than you think and the LCC staff has went out of their way to make things go well. They all have t shirts and badges on so you can ask if you need any help or assistance. The reason for the fans sitting on same side is so when the teams go to their locker rooms they won't be heckled by the opposing fans throwing crap and other stuff that goes on. I truly think LCC deserves the boys regional tourney. It is by far better than going to Memorial Gym in Hazard, which at one time WAS a great gym to host it, but it's time has passed. If the big shots in Hazard want the regional tourney again build a new gym, we all know you have the $$$$$. Memorial Gym time is over, and everytime Powell County host the region there is a big fight and one of the favorites gets crooked. Powell and Estill should have been put in the 10th Region anyway

letcher has done a great job so far. only thing i didnt like, like most ppl, was the 2 teams playing against each other sat on the same side. if it was a fan problem, just move the locker room locations around. i can see it holding 3,500+. but with the team bands there it brings it down by a couple hundred cause they take up space. it is bigger than most ppl think. all central school gyms and county gyms are big, with the exception of hazard they are special. other schools in the future should take note on how to host, letcher has done it nearly perfect so far, just amazing.

Actually there are hospitality rooms for both basketball players and another seperate hospitality room for the cheerleaders... I guess they have just not been as advertised at the main hospitality room. They have the same foods as the rest but are held in rooms that aren't as big (don't get me wrong they are still very nice).

LCC's "clearing" the gym was the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen. I paid $10 when I went in for the first game so I could watch both games. Then they made everyone go outside after the first game and it was total chaos and confusion. No one knew what they were supposed to do or where we were supposed to go to get back in. It seemed like we stood out there 30 minutes before they opened the doors. What if it had been raining? We stopped at wendy's after the second game and people there were talking about how stupid that was.

"People who wants to stay for both games can pay 7 dollars instead of 5 and have their hand stamped. This will allow them to go into the lobby after the first game, stand momentarily, and then be released into the gymnasium in a special line with no pay, no waits, no anything."

Not one word of this was true. It wasn't $7 it was $10. We didn't go into the lobby we had to go outside. It wasn't momentarily, it was more like 20-30 mins and we did have to wait and wait and wait.

Well it did give the people coming in a chance for a good seat. Some people that "work" cannot get there at 5:00 for a good seat like others and it gave them a chance to get a good seat too. I know it took some effort but I would say the Breathitt and JBS fans are glad that they were able to get a good seat. Plus it was nice weather outside and it wasn't raining so quit complaining.

The most ridiculous event was driving to Hazard to watch a game and being turned away because the gym could not hold everyone.

Last night everyone was able to see the game(s) that they wanted to see.

LCC has lifted the bar on how to host the regional and everyone else will have to aspire to get to that level.
