Alfus are coach changes going to be made? I don't know but the situation at hand is kind of scary. If tubby goes we could be down for more than a few years. If he stays and we get the PP and JL we could be a quality team the next couple of years. It's kind of hard situation for us Kentucky fans. I have heard that if Tubby leaves that PP would not come. Then what if some our current role players like Meeks decided to transfer..
Anyway, back to thread topic. If changes are made I would love to see Rick Pitino..

:) sorry alfus.. I just saw the other thread about tubby being out of UK.. I have been in the hospital for three days. Wow this is shocking news. I never expected Ky would give him the boot. Not this year anyway.

I didn't expect it either man. I thought he would at least be back next season for another go round on this rollercoaster. I have ill feelings towards his resignation so for now I don't even want to imagine another coach here. I'm just looking up some good Golden Gopher gear to wear next season. :)

:):) You know what would be ironic is if Tubby takes the gophers to the tourney next year and we met up and they beat us:eek:
You heard any reliable news about the front runners for the job?

Billy Donovan is not the highest paid coach at Florida anymore, Urban Meyer is. Will that play into anything?
I have mixed feelings about this because as QQ says, we are guaranteed to lose Patterson and Lucas now and Morris will leave, so where does this leave us?

Im still not counting out D'antoni. And Id like to see Few, Pelphrey, Izzo (I just like Izzo, lol), and Ford's names mentioned.... now that the biggest job in the country has a job opening, there will be several big name coaches' names thrown around. I would still love to see Pelphrey, as I know many of you think he isnt capable of leading a major D1 program, but thats what my heart says. But Id love to see D'antoni come to Lexington. The state and the fans will love him and his style. Its going to be a big blue circus until somebody is hired.

ESPN.com is reporting that the possible candidates are Michigan State's Tom Izzo, Marquette's Tom Crean, Memphis's John Calipari, Gonzaga's Mark Few, and Notre Dame's Mike Brey. I like Izzo. He has a National Championship with the Spartans, and just look at the players he has produced: Jason Richardson, Mateen Cleaves, Morris Peterson, Paul Davis, and Charlie Bell were all NCAA All-Americans, and look at the impact Zach Randolph is having in the NBA. He led the Spartans to 3 straight Final Fours (1998-1999, 1999-2000, 2000-2001), with a National Championship in 1999-2000. He also reached the Final Four in 2004-2005. I like the way he recruits (8 McDonald All-Americans, and 5 Michigan Mr. Basketballs in 8 seasons, 1 Illinois Mr. Basketball) and develops players.
I think Calipari would be good too. Be it, he hasn't proven to be a contender in the NCAA Tournament, he consistently has one of the country's top teams. He recruits some of the best that America's high schools have to offer.
I don't think UK will be a #1 contender next season, but give the new coach a year or two to implement his new system and to get some players in, and then I think UK will be yet again a top program.

My top ten list of UK coaching position candidates and why they need to be hired:
1. Sean Sutton---non drinker
2. Denny Crum---needs a job--hear his show with Joe B. is gonna get canned!
3. Mark Starnes, isn't he looking for a job?
4. Rodney Rowe (Paintsville never could beat him)
5. Saul Smith (Tubby Part II)
6. The General (cause that's the only way he'd play in Rupp)
7. Dwayne Casey-- at least he tried to recruit
8. Dean Smith----he ain't dead yet
9. John Wooden---an oldy but a goody
10. Hal Mumme---at least his teams would pass!

Don't think you'll see that till the next time U.K. gets smacked with violations and us Ky. boys are the only ones left to fill the roster. We may be a little low on talent but we make it up in heart. That's what was special about the unforgetables. They got playing time they would not have gotten had the program not been in trouble and everyone else headed for higher ground.

Actually ESPN analysis Pat Forde, says that Florida's AD was asked about the matter and if he'd allow UK to speak with Donovan, and the AD says, It a free world, and I don't think I can stop anyone from contacting Billy D about his job. Plus the Florida AD has offered a contract extension to Billy D, and he hasn't made any attempt to discuss it with the AD. So Billy D may be the next UK Head Coach after the season is over for the Gators.

I see Billy D really considering this position. This would give him a chance to coach at a basketball school and get him away from football heaven in Gainesville. Pretty sad when you are defending national champ and play first 2 rounds of NCAA tourney in nearby New Orleans and only have 800 fans show up. It doesnt matter if he wins 10 titles at Florida he is still going to be second fiddle to Meyer and the football team. If he comes to UK he could recruit the best players in the country, and have a new practice facility that is second to none. He can even get Florida to consider building a new gym. He has been trying to get a new gym for 5 years now. Billy D will definatly consider the UK job.

Here's one way you'll get a clue if Donovan is coming or not. If Patterson marks UK off his list he plans to narrow down to 3 in the coming days, cross out Donovan. If Patterson keeps UK on his list of 3, pencil in Donovan as UK's next coach. Personally, I think it will come down to either Rick Pitino, Billie Gillespie or John Caliapri. Either would be OK with me.

Mark Few couldn't handle Kentucky. I'd like to see Rick Barnes (Texas coach) or Billy Donovan (Florida coach). If these two guys can recruit five star players at "Football Schools," than I'm sure he can recruit them at Kentucky. They both can coach the half-court game and the fast pace game, thats why I like both of them.

In my opinion, I think Billy Donovan WANTS to come to UK. The only reason is because the University of Florida asked him to sign a Multi-year deal after he won the Championship, yet he only opted for a one year extension. So why would he do something like that. All year long I have harped about Tubby being gone and Donovan coming to Kentucky. I would love it if he came to the bluegrass. I smell Championships already!!!!

Didn't Pitino say that when the Cardinals played it Rupp, he felt at home? Personally I would like to see Donovan at UK. Yesterday when asked about the job he said it was obvious that he was going to be asked, but he did not go out like Calapari and say he wasn't interested, he just said that he is right now concerned with getting his team to the FF. The Florida AD was smug about the whole situation when asked about Kentucky talking to them, he just said that it was a free country and they can talk to him if they want to.

I have to diagree, Few transformed Gonzaga into an unknown mid major to a national power in the state of Washington which is far from a basketball state. He also had to recruit in the shadows of Washington, Washington St., Oregon, UCLA, etc. At UK, Few would be able to recruit. Look at how much players have developed under his guidence. You have Morrison,Stepp,Ravio,Batista,The center for the Lakers(name slips my mind right now), and the list goes on and on. Nobody wanted those guys and look what they did. Thats an example of a good coach. Imagine what he could do with high caliber players. I think Few is the best man for the Job, weather or not he would leave Gonzaga I don't know but the pay would have to be better at UK.....JMO, But I'd love tosee it personally.

I don't think Donovan is a long shot for the coaching position. The thing is, UK would have to wait 'til early April to even talk to him (unless Florida is upset in the tournament, which is unlikely in my mind), which could ultimately hurt recruiting. There is something is Donovan's contract that prevents him from talking to any school in the Southeastern Conference except 1...KENTUCKY. He denied multiple attempts by the university for a contract extension, and his wife is from the Lexington area. To me, it seems all of the pieces are there for him to be the next coach at the University of Kentucky. This is a really good article I read from ESPN.com. I got most of this information from the article, and it goes into some more detail about the situation.

Travis Ford took EKU to the NCAA tournament....big deal. Now he's coaching at UMass. Mmkay, good for him. He is still in no way the level coach UK should have.
IMO, Billy Donovan is the only one that can save UK from disaster next season. We are going to lose our decent recruits now that Tubby is leaving, but Donovan might be high-profile enough to bring some of his own or whatever. Problem with that is, we're going to have to wait until Florida gets out of the tournament which might be too late for recruiting. On top of that, we're going to have to pay him something around $3 million a year to entice him to come.

Actually Monson built the program at Gonzaga and Few took over after he left for Minnesota. How Ironic would it be if Few came to Kentucky and hired Monson as an assistant after he had been fired by the Gophers and replaced by none other than Tubby Smith.

IMO and an inside source says Billy Donavan has already been offered the position. Makes good sense. He already won a national title at Florida, he will always be second behind the football program at Florida. Florida basketball vs. Kentucky basketball. Come on, no comparison. He has gotten real lucky with his recruits at Florida, they all have played way above their expectations and potential. He knows this. Florida is lucky to have 400-500 fans at the tournament games, we have that many show up to watch practice.
