Reminds me alot of when Roy Williams had Kansas in the final four in 2003... everyone knew North Carolina wanted him... everyone knew North Carolina needed him... and everyone knew Williams loved UNC...
Could the same happen with Billy D? I'm not hearing or seeing anything that would change my opinion... I think he'll be in Lexington in 10 days...

And Pitinos statement. Then again he probably said that to make himself feel better for not getting the offer.
Pitino actually probably put in a good word for Donovan. He was here this past weekend and reportedly golfed a round with Mitch Barnhart. Pitino has a special team returning at Louisville. No need for him to leave a potential top 10 team next for next season.

I agree no reason for him to leave but we all know Pitino is MR. EGO and it probably does hurt not to get the offer. At his age he most likely won't be coaching as long as Billy D. The contract is suppose to contain a 3.5 mil. bonus if he stays the entire 7 years so it would be 7 years 28 million. 4 mil. per year OMG.

Donovan's agent can be in contact with any school at anytime. Just like Tubby's was at Minnesota. As long as UK isn't directly talking with Donavan there is nothing to worry about. Anything, Donovan is hearing or saying is through his agent.
I don’t think it really matters if WLEX is reporting as a done deal. They have a right to Freedom of press. It will not affect the outcome because WLEX is in no way affiliated with the NCAA nor is UK in direct communication with Donovan. The contract has not been signed yet. If it had been, Donovan would not be able to coach the Gators this weekend. I'm sure Donovan could/has reported to his agent that he is taking the job and the agent has informed UK officials. Just appears someone in the upper echelon at UK couldn't keep it a secret..

Darrell Bird who broke the story had this to say....
Steady guys, geez!!! This post on House of Blue -- where we discuss rumors every day -- is exactly what it says it is. Blockbuster deal done? (note question mark). Did not come from UK officials (as stated). REPORTEDLY set to offer. Can still fall through? Yes.
I put a one paragraph teaser on main page simply to direct folks to the message board, same as we did with Sunday's Scuttlebutt segment. That's it. If this had been a news story announcing UK will sign its coach I would have included comments from UK officials.
This is one of several rumors circulating -- only this one can't be shot down -- and from what I've learned these are the details. But we are still a long way from done as evidenced by the reference to another story coming up about Plan B candidates if this doesn't pan out. (I've been told some media outlets ran with this info as fact, which is unfortunate but I can't control that.)
I can appreciate the excitement over the possibilities, but let's take a breath. And thanks to everyone who read it for what it is, adding comments like, "I hope this is true." "I'll keep my fingers crossed."
Sounds like WLEX botched the story by saying it was a done deal which was never said by DB. A public apology should be made for the madness that ensued after Justin White of WLEX18 claimed this was a done deal according to DB and TCP.

They probably were, but in the end the juice isn't going to be worth the squeeze on this one. They are catching a ton of heat on this now and will be flooded with emails and phone calls until they retract saying it's a done deal and apologize for it. Something like this could completely destroy our chances at BD.

Read post #39. It is a direct reply from the author of the story after it was reported. It is believed to be a rumor at this point but he is pretty accurate on most occasions. He didn't report this to be fact or that it was a done deal but that it is simply an offer on the table. Nothing more at this point.

That would be my prediction as well Q. Florida WILL counter. I will say that UK will counter back. There will be 2 to 4 offers from each school, MY guess, before it is all said and done and yes, the final deal should be around 5 million a year. I wonder if we will be made aware of this throughout the process or if they will keep the numbers behind the scenes and the D's final stop and salary will be what gets announced..

Kentucky contacted MSU today and asked permission to talk with Izzo but there isn't much discussion of it.
Crean is an option despite how bad fans including myself may not like it.
D'Antoni isn't being mentioned at all but I guess it could come as a surprise later on if all falls through.
And of course Ford and Pelphrey are going to continue to be mentioned as backup plans.

It seems that they definitely want Donovan. He was the obvious first choice but more so by the fans than I think by the UK higher-ups! All the fans want to see someone that they believe could not only put UK back on top but someone that would bring in an exciting game to watch. Tubby was about plodding around in the half court sets even though he didn't have the right kind of personnel to pull it off. I think that Donovan would open up the three pt. and the full court game again and make things interesting. Now the only problem is getting him here.

Catspause.com has run a new "Plan B" story which displaces the Donovan contract story from its headline position. Darrell Bird, the Catspause.com publisher, has posted a message on the site's message board indicating this is NOT a done deal and that the story was not intended for the widespread publication it received. Bird appears to be trying to relegate this story back to 'rumor' status.
Will WLEX and/or Catspause give a retraction to their story?
Yet remember, Darrell Bird would know the repercussions of running a story like this if it wasn't true. My personal opinion is that the story has been leaked.
For what it's worth and I don't like to report rumors, but a member of the church that Mitch Barnhardt attends (Southland Christian in Lexington) told my last night that the story was all over the congregation on Sunday that the deal with Billy D. was done. If this is a lie, the whole church will have to be re-baptized.

The story by Darrell Bird puts UK in an unfortunate position --- now Barnhart's cards have been placed on the table by somebody who doesn't even draw a UK salary (not that you could tell from Darrell's work :) ). Now the UAA in Gainesville knows what kind of money it has to put together.

More fuel for the fire... http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaab/news?slug=dw-midwest2007billydonovanl032707&prov=yhoo&type=lgns
To add fuel to the fire Monday, the Kentucky fan magazine The Cat's Pause reported a $28 million, 7-year contract offer was brokered by Donovan's agent in Lexington late last week.
The magazine didn't say Donovan had accepted, but expressed the clear confidence of people around the Wildcat athletic department that "Kentucky is poised to name Billy Donovan its new basketball coach shortly after Florida's final game in the NCAA Tournament."
Oh, boy.
This goes back to what others have been saying in this thread. That this is the offer that was possibly laid on the table for Billy D. and because Donovan hasn't come out publicly on his position despite the fact that his team is in the Final Four and this is a huge distraction further validates the story in my opinion.

I love this quote from the link I listed on yahoo.com... Attention TomSportsHack.
UF president Bernie Machen promised the Associated Press that the Gators "were not going to lose (Donovan) to anybody." There is little doubt Florida has the resources to match or exceed anything Kentucky can drum up. But then again, if UF pays Donovan the big dollars, it will have to pay football coach Urban Meyer the same amount, if not more.

Even more nuggets of knowledge to feast on for those who still don't believe Florida is ruled by football and basketball is an afterthought...
Kentucky is a place people dream of coaching at, the fan passion and history are immense and there is something magical about 23,000 Cat fans filling Rupp Arena each night. Even as defending national champs, Florida still routinely failed to sell out the 12,000-seat O'Connell Center this season. In football-mad Gainesville, Donovan will never be king.

Exactly. And this, along with the money, is why Billy Donovan will be UK's next coach. In fact Tubby actually has visited with Billy in person at least 4 times in the last month and a half or so. He wanted to make sure things were in place before leaving UK. He will be coming, the exact numbers are currently being hashed out with UK and Donovan's agent.

I really think UK has landed Billy Donovan.....funny how eerily quiet it has been out of UK athletics offices...no news no intervews...leads me to believe the serach is over.

I ABSOLUTELY do not want Pitino back! He had his reign as king of Camelot, and gave up the throne willingly. Time for some new blood!

I would love for Billy Donovan to come to UK.. But I just don't think he is.. I think the reason he is keeping the door open and not dismissing that he wouldn't take the job to the press, is to milk more money from Florida.. Word has it in Huntington, that Billy is staying, at least thats what he has told Patterson.. If he says upfront to the press that hes staying, Florida won't have to counter with more money.. Ole' Billy is quite clever..

Why wouldn't Patterson already commit to Florida if Billy D. already told him he was staying?
Money matters somewhat to Donovan but it's not all that matters. A lot more than money comes into play in this. Donovan knows he would be #1 in Kentucky whereas in Florida he is #2 at all times. Their basketball team in in the Final Four and on the front of their rivals page is nothing but football until late tonight when the finally put something up about the basketball team.
His arena only sold out 8 times this season. More people are on TCP at certain times than their arena will even fit.
Donovan is quite clever, and he knows what his legacy could be at UK compared to that of Florida.

Because Duke is still quite highly in the mix, especially since McRoberts entering the NBA Draft... Patterson and Coach K stay in close contact, according to Patterson's mom, he calls or texts everyday.. Donovan is trying to gain the trust of Patterson by letting him know the situation, and maybe draw him to come.. and Patterson has already said he will be making his decision the 2nd week of April.. Weither KY has picked someone or not.. I think the only thing he is waiting on is to make sure hes not intrested in the new KY coach..
Why wouldn't Patterson already commit to Florida if Billy D. already told him he was staying?

Evidently rallo316 hopes Donovan will be the next coach at LIU-C.W. Post, or possibly Molloy College in Donovan's hometown on Long Island. :)

Has anyone noticed that Billy Donovan hasn't said "KENTUCKY" or "MITCH BARNHARDT" in anyone of his interviews about the subject?
