View Full Version : What Do You Want in a Radio Station?

Reading the "Z-Rock" thread was interesting for me and here are some points that hit home with me...
Why isn't there an "all rock" format here in East Kentucky?
Probably because Advertisers won't buy into it, or at least management of the radio station doesn't think they will buy into the format. Acts like Korn and Godsmack get associated with an act like Marilyn Manson and that's enough to scare potential advertisers away in East Kentucky. Remember, this is the bible belt, and hard/punk rock isn't the mainstream choice of music here.
Can an "all rock" format succeed in East Kentucky?
I believe it can in the long run if presented correctly. I believe a station with a mix of classic/metal/rock can succeed in moderation. Build a station around classic hits that the masses know and trickle in harder/heavier acts from today's rock. Mix in heavier/newer rock groups as the night comes in and why not pay DJ's (or hire DJ's) to work a 10pm til 2am shift to interact with the audience and plug upcoming events, take request, talk about current events and interact. Of course, the station has to be more than a jukebox like most stations in East Kentucky (and anywhere for that matter) are and stay away from playing annoying commericals like Eric C. Conn spots. I know it's money, but there's a line between being responsible with content and just plain greedy.
If stations build a relationship with listeners (no matter what format) those listeners will come out to station events like remotes at car dealerships, because they believe in the station. All advertisers want is money in return for their investment - all money is the same no matter whose pocket it comes out of.
What do you want from a radio station?
Personally speaking, I want interaction, information, entertainment... It's simple really. Years ago, a request line at a radio station was something you planned your day around. Nowadays, stations have consultants to tell them what to play and computers to play it for them, which strips radio of its strongest suit - personality.
Why let a computer miles away broadcasting from a tower dicate what I listen too when I can put music/content that I enjoy on my IPod and press shuffle?
What do you want to listen to and what do you want in a radio station if you could ask???

More music, less selling cars at Deskins and John Gray's.

A station that is modeled after the Z-Rock or double Q in Lexington. Plays Metallica, alice in Chains, Nirvana, Gun N Roses, Rush, Pink Floyd, etc. (Some kind of classic rock/metal) along with new stuff like Godsmack, etc.

I agree with all of you on this. Thats exactly what I want out of a radio station. But unfortunately JJ is right, its all about money and greed and not caring what the public wants. The only stations that have request lines anymore are 98.9 in johnson co and 106.5 in sorryville, and thats only when they have the bluegrass guys on there. They do not care what the young people want, but heck its been like that in magoffin co for as long as i can remember. Not only with radio, it goes as far as having anything recreational for them to do, like bowling alleys, movie theaters, etc. Also there are no jobs around here, and not just for young people but for anyone at all. Its all about filling their pockets. Sorry I went off topic, but it all goes together when u think about it. Its all about one thing, the almighty dollar!!!!

A station like ones in bigger cities that play 20 songs in a row before commercials. Those are the best. I'd be up for a GOOD rap station with some r&b.

Well, I personally don't listen to radio for the personalities, unless it's a comedy show like Bob and Tom. If I'm listening for music, I want to hear the music and not a lot of somebody yammering on and on. This is not to say I want a computer playing the songs, I like having a DJ but mainly so they can introduce each song and the artist and maybe drop an interesting tidbit about the band. I get so annoyed when I hear an awesome new song that I've never heard, but it is not identified either before or afterward!
What I want is a station that would play a mix of hard rock/metal from the 70's through today's new stuff. And not play the same Hinder song over and over.

MTV sucks big time, and VH1 right along with it. Now CMT is getting into all these stupid reality shows too. What happened to the days of just playing music? I also totally agree with the statements about Hinder, I cant stomach that bunch of Aerosmith wannabes. Cowbell said it right, more music and little tidbits about the band or whoever is on the radio, and less talking and commercials. I get most of my music info from billboard.com and other music sites, although its hard to find anything on hard rock/metal acts.

Amen brother! I remember when I was younger and MTV actually played music videos, and the only other stuff was Remote Control. Then gradually they started doing crap like Real World and Road Rules, and now you have the complete joke that that channel is today. What a shame.
Man, I long for the days of the old Headbanger's Ball on Saturday nights... :(

I agree. I am not old enough to remember the glory days of headbangers ball and a constant supply of vidoes on Mtv. So when I saw that this stuff was going to be on Mtv 2 I was like Heck yeah now people are coming back to their senses. Now Mtv2 is turning into the sister (no pun or anything) station for Mtv. All reality shows little music....same crap. Just give me a Mtv that plays Bevis and Butthead, Headbangers ball, through in Ren and Stimpy and videos to fill in all the other time slots.
I am getting off topic.... I guess my dream station will always be like double Q in Lexington.
That was kind of freaky. we posted about Headbangers ball at the same time More Cowbell.

Headbanger's Ball rocked!! Since none of the radio stations around here played much hard rock (and no metal) back then, it was the only way I found out about great new bands and current info on existing bands. I was absolutely heartbroken the day they took it off the air...

YES!!!! I thought I was the only one that watched Headbangers Ball! Rikki Rachtman would bring out different guests every Saturday night, and I remember watching the show when he had Blind Melon on, and a couple of days later, Shannon Hoon overdosed. Man, that brings back memories, lol..They had Pantera on there once, my favorite alltime metal band:rockon: and now MTV would fold if that thought was even introduced, lol..I remember HB when they had Adam Curry on it, lol..the most UN-rock'n roll guy on the channel hosting it, then Rachtman came aboard. I can also remember watching Classic VH-1, with all the videos from the 60s and 70s on there, James Gang, Hendrix, Steppenwolf, Cream, Bad Company, you name it. That was, my friend, the good ol days of rock on TV, lol..and Im afraid we'll never see them again. I remember Remote Control with Ken, Colin, and Kari (she was hot), and the grand prize was the "sporty new Subaru Justy!", lol..jeez man, you brought back some teenage memories right there..Amen brother! Anything but used car people.... won't name them, don't need to. They run me right off the radio and into the cd case. Radio needs to play music. No matter what type music that particular station plays.... just play what you play... but I agree that it's entertaining to hear a tidbit of good info on either the song or its group or singer.
A title would be very helpful too!
I also like sports shows.. call-in's! Where is "swivel hips", Doug Orr? (actually he's now Doug Ormay on the Kentucky network... but his Sports @ Your Service broadcast was enjoyable!) He sounds as though he always is happy to be there doing what he's doing!

Fantastic choice! You can probably guess mine.. Metallica. But Pantera is one of my all time favorite bands. If you want something a little different but still metalish/rockish check out Dreamtheater. They are prog-metal which basically means a keyboard plays with them and they explore different sounds and times. However, they have the most talent I have ever seen in a band. But for some reason they are still kind of in the underground (even though they have been around for 22 years). Anyways (I am rambling on lol) check them out you will like them.

HA! Adam Curry, I remember him, the guy who had prettier hair than most girls! I don't think I watched much of the show with him hosting, but you're right, that guy is probably the last person that should have been hosting a show for metalheads. Rachtman was pretty cool, though.
Awesome to hear that there's another Pantera fan on here, too! I wouldn't say they were my favorite band (that's Metallica), but they were up near the top. I loved Cowboys From **** and Vulgar Display of Power! Real shame about Dime-Bag, I hate that we'll never have any more new Pantera stuff ever again.

Before Dimebag died I was hoping that there may be a reunion tour coming in like 4 or 5 years after Anselmo and and the Darrel brothers reconciled their differences. But now I don't think that the relationship could ever be fixed. It is a shame that Dimebag had to die because of the relationship with Anselmo.

This is awesome, I didnt know there were other metal heads around like me. Pantera, Metallica are two of my all time favs. Now its bands like HellYeah, Disturbed, Godsmack (Great concert at east ky expo center back in december) and some others. Thats what I want to hear on the radio, not some teeniebopper and rap crap mixed with a thousand commercials. I didnt get to see much of Headbangers ball when I was younger but I did see some clips from it, it looked great. They tried to bring it back a few years ago, but it wasnt too good. Does anyone know where to find any good metal music at all? If so, let me know please.

I listen to just about every station in the area. I like different genre's, but the one thing that kills me is the advertisments. I'm tired of hearing about Eric C. Conn and John Grays, and Maggards Furniture, etc. My favirote in the area is Q95, but the bad thing about'em is they play the same music every four hours. They've ran "Hinder" into the ground. I cannot stand hearing them anymore. The best station I've ever listened to is 98.1 "The Bull" in Lexington. They do UK call-in shows and other things that I want to hear. I only wish more stations was like "The Bull."

Godsmack is awesome, they are probably my favorite band to come out in the last several years! I didn't see them at the Expo this past December, but that was because I had already bought tickets for their show at Louisville in October before I knew they were coming here. I have also seen them when they opened for Metallica on their tour a few years ago. Now that was my dream concert!

Godsmack but on a heak of a show the best I've seen and there was alot of people there too, the floor was totally packed and several sections of the upper arena were packed too, I think an all rock station with bands like godsmack, 3 days grace, staind, metallica, Avenged sevenfold, Nirvana, some 80's rock and more like that would hold its own around this area, But the heavier stuff might not do so well around this area although it's my favorite genre of music

Staind put on a great show earlier in the year. Also, they had 3 other bands with them which allowed people like me to kind of get to heard three days grace a little more. Crossfade sucked it up, I hated every song they played live (I listened to them a before the concert and a few of the song were not that bad), they absolutely killed the energy in the expo center until three days grace came out.

That concert would've been better. Seether was initially supposed to be there, but had to cancel due to their singer going into rehab, and Crossfade was then tabbed as the replacement. I was bummed when I heard that, because I like Seether pretty well (their sound kinda resembles a lesser version of Nirvana), whereas I can't stand Crossfade. Staind and 3 Days Grace both put on good shows, though.
