I know this is a common thread but now that we have lost some players and some have moved. What's everyone's thought's on the outcome of this season?

A tougher schedule but still plenty of talent. Attitude will be the deciding factor on how far this team goes.

Seth Moved- who else?.....Some have not been out but that means better competition for others. I have not seen the team but on paper we look stronger than last year and the year before.

I think the that you guys will be just fine. You have a great coaching staff and alot of kids out. You may have lost some players but I don't think you'll be hurt too bad. The Coach knows how to win and how to bring the best out in his players. Good Luck to the Devils this season.

31 game home win streak. (last home loss Ashland Sept 5 2003 score was 33-14)
The 2007 Red Devil team will field 18 Seniors according to last years roster at the awards banquet .
These 18 guys will take the field with 30 full games under their varsity belts.
10 of which were play off games against some of the best teams in the state.
Belfry x 2 , Newport, O- Cath, Mercer Co x 2 , Fleming Co x 3, Corbin, Henry Co, Ashland Blazer x 2. Of these games they lost 1 to Mercer Co 15-12.
Needless to say, but "I feel good about 2007!":devilflam

They also lost one game to Ashland and Boyd County each during that stretch. Also, I wouldn't consider Henry Co. as one of the toughest teams in the state. IN 05 they finished 6-5 and then 3-7 in 06 missing the playoffs.

SIMON KENTON
- Finished last season 6-4
- Return 6 starters on both sides of the ball
- Lost their QB and RB, but return their top two receivers.
- Picked to finish third or fourth in their distirct behind Boone County, Ryle, and Campbell County.
- Should be decent on the line, biggest strength on defense will be their LB's.

Keep in mind that Belfry enjoyed a two and a half year stretch like that in which they had won over 25 consecutive games against Kentucky competition, and had not lost to a AA team between Breathitt County in the playoffs of 2002 til Russell in the state semi's of 2005..... but low and behold the Devils got them. Streaks are meant to be broken, and I am sure there are a couple teams capable of ending those streaks, one of which wears Red and White. ;)

Very true TC68. Ashland in 2006 was a tough game and a tough pill to swallow. Ashland found out what kind of RB Matt Thomas was going to be in 2007 that night and we were all impressed.
The Boyd Co game in 2005 was this simple. 80% of their coaching staff were former Russell standout players who played under Ivan. They were in the Russell huddle all night. Good job by the BC coaching staff that night.
As for Henry Co. Their O-Line average size was the same as most D1 colleges, well over 300lbs per man. They didn't have the horses to make the plays they needed but they had a winning season against good teams and made the play-offs.

Well first off there isn't gonna be any teams that wear Red and White playing at RHS in 2007.
Secondly, yeah Belfry's stretch of AA wins was impressive, and ended. But Boyle Co and Danville both had streaks that lasted longer and were more impressive.
Russell has won 31 consecutive games AT HOME and I don't see the streak ending at the hands of Ashland, but anything is possible. Just like TC68's AVATAR says. "We Believe"! The streak lives on! :devilflam

Actually with realignment Russell and Belfry would meet in the region finals if they both make it that far. Also the game would be played at Belfry.
I wouldn't take Boyd Co lightly either. They return alot from last year and should be much improved. Also don't forget they were the only team to beat Russell in 05 as well as being the only KY team to beat Belfry in 04.

I'm not worried because I know there is plenty of talent in the backfield and along the line. My main concern is attitude. I get the feeling there is a little complacency right now. Attitude and work ethic got the last two Russell teams to the state championship game. I wonder if this years edition is as dedicated to working together or do they just expect teams to roll over because they are Russell? Nothing worse for a team then a bad case of the big head.

This year is different because Russell has no outstanding running back but we have a Dandy quarterback who doesnt care to put you in your place... over the past couple days of practice i've been able to tell that we are working as a team and, in order to win and get back to state we are going to have to come together and work. No one or two people is going to be carrying us this year, its going to be a team effort that im possitive will be there.

Honestly I think Russell will have to do alot of hard work this season. Much harder than previous years b/c im not trying to stab anyone here but now they dont have the shadows to hide behind anymore of last years starters. ive talked to a few people who have spoke with some players and they aare already worried about simon-kenton. Why? theyre just a football team. youve got to take this one week at a time. and as for state, get it out of your head for now, you cant focus all your attention to it yet. just b/c we had a few good seasons doesnt mean that we will be going every year until the world is no longer existing. i do wish the best to the guys tho this year and i hope they have a great run

A lot of changes will probably be made to both sides of the ball..
on O i think jones will more than likely see the running back spot and AJ will more than likely see the QB spot. IMO i think that would be a great move.. if anyone saw the maroon and white game last night, jones got a shot at HB and showed his stuff will a simple run.. looked great..
on D jones at linebacker would be a good move too, DE is a tough spot but i think we have ppl to fill that in if jones moves to LB. To say who would fill the DE spot.. i couldnt tell you.. but i think we have the tallent to do so.

It seems to me like AJ has great poise in the pocket and just looks natural back there behind the center, Gabbard had that too but looked outta place when he was flushed outta the pocket.
Jones on the other hand is an outstanding back. He proved that was his position his Sophmore season. He can play QB but he's better suited for the RB spot.
Ashland has been going through the same personnel issues for the last 2 seasons.
Finding the best fit for great playmakers is a tough job. I'd rather have that problem than no playmakers though. I'm sure Coach McGlone will get it all worked out before the Greenup game. We could see alot of AJ depending on the offensive set. We will for sure see lots of him on defense.
I have a couple of questions for RedDevilRB.
Is Evan Boyd filling Josh Wills' shoes on offense(G) and defense(LB)? If not who is the middle LB?
Who is calling the Defense on the field for Coach Morris?

Filling the shoes of Josh Wills' woudl be crazy lol.. he was outstanding.. but he has been pulling guard at practice and playing LB on D.. but Jones and Adam Foster have also been put in at the LB stop to see how they do.. and i must say.. they look solid there.. the russell line up is really undecided right now..
and Coach Morris will be calling the defence like always.. there is no one like him around.. he is probably the smartest man i have ever seen when it comes to Defence

I meant is he filling the position. I know it would be hard to fill those shoes figuratively. But don't count on EB to be a let down at that position. He's been 1 year behind Josh Wills at those positions since he was 8 years old and this year he'll get his due. Of course Coach Morris will be calling the defense, but who is the D captain receiving the calls on the field?

I say you will see a mix of players in the backfield this year, and moved all around, your main lineup will be jones-QB, Bailey and Abrams at HB, with bates at FB. I think at times you will see aj come in and jones move to HB, Will Rice will get some FB time. So expect to see alot of players in there, but those first 4 will be 80% of the time, barring any injuries. Jones moving to Lb would be an awesome move, playing him at end, limits him to one side of the field, and teams can adjust their offense, to run away form him, if he gives them too much trouble, at LB that cant happen.

Some bad news.. we watched some film today and bates didnt do so hot on there.. coaches we not happy at all..
Moved AJ to half back:confused: and Abrams to full back..
I doesnt make sense to me.. but im sure coaches got somethin in mind..
Aj-OB
Abrams or Bailey- HB
Jones-HB
Rice - FB ...... that would seem the best IMO

I thought AJ Cordle looked good at the HB spot. He made some nice cuts, has good speed and is a good reciever out of the backfield. He gives the coaches alot of options.
Abrams at FB may be the place for him Quick hitters and cutbacks allowing him to use his strength and quickness.
I still see Will Rice getting some carries too. It really is a deep backfield. Just have to find the right place to put all of the pieces.

I thought the younger kids looked OK. Need more reps in the offense and need to shore up the tackling a bit.

i heard today they put Aj at the hb spot, took bates out, and put drew at FB,I think thats a good move, now if they will just swap aj and jones, i dont think AJ has it physically to play that half back, he runs sweeps good, but whats he weigh 150lbs? I dont see him running the 26's,24's, or dives, let alone blocking down on linebackers and DE's, hes more of a natural QB, Plus I would like to see what jones could do running with some blockers out there. Instead of those naked bootlegs

Aj could run the 26's and 24's but yeah your right jones would do a lot better..
jones needs to find holes and cut .. he likes to run ppl over.. which is wonderful in some situations.. but in others its better to looks right or left and run away from the defence

Can he do it? Yes...
Will he? It depends on if he steps it up.. he has gotten a lot stronger since last year. and if he wants it bad enough he will give it everything he has.
IMO i think he can do it..
We will see more of him at QB at the scimmage on sat...
RedDevilRB dont be so negative.... thats not how devils do things:devilflam
I second that! Championships are won by TEAM. You pick your team mate up, not tear them down. Even if that person is awarded your spot.
I remember on one occasion years ago, a running back was giving HIMSELF too much credit for his success. So the entire offensive line got together and on the 1st snap from center at the next game they all just stepped away from their blocks. Needless to say the RB was swarmed. He came back to the huddle and apologized to his linemen.
So Keep encouraging each other.
