I havn't seen any threads saying who they actually hired as their new head football coach.
I saw some speculation that it was former Powell coach Bruce Jones.
If so, How are things looking for Phelps so far?

Coach Jones is a very hard working coach. He will have those kids at Phelps ready to play for 4 quarters. Nothing fancy, He's an old school coach who don't care to say " Were runnin' it right here, Stop us if you can." He will be a good fit for Phelps.

Why is that so hard to believe? Just because they do not have a top rated program does not mean that they may not have a few great players come through there from time to time. I would think that they would have to be very good to get the attention of scouts but anything is possible.

He may or may not have had the #1 defense during that time....Paris was very good in the early '80s...my point was that asst coaches do not get credit for championships, Head coaches do.
Coach Jones may be a very good coach and he may very well be a great hire for Phelps.

Of Phelps and Powell County! Don't flatter yourself. Two of the losingest programs in the state aren't exactly what anybody is jealous of. There were 41 teams in the state last year that won between 0 and 2 games. Phelps only won 2 games and the mighty Powell County Pirates only won one game. If you have to call people jealous to justify your losses then so be it. But guess what, no matter how many people you call jealous, your losses are still losses. It is people like you thta give Powell and Phelps bad names. Whether you are a fan or not, you are the reason people don't take these programs seriously.

Coach Jones is a good Coach, and he has a good personality, the kind of thing that makes a kid enjoy their sport... and yeah he does work their butts off... practices last year at powell would start right after school and go til after 8 and 9 some nights depending on the output of the players that night... but whether or not the kids are conditioning their butts off and practicing their butts off it still remains its not the coaches fault alone what happens on the field... he can tell them what play to run, but if the kids don't get it right how is it his fault? yeah powell and phelps haven't been the best teams in the state but you can't blame it on the coach alone... good luck to coach jones at phelps and whitaker at powell... i hope both teams have a good season this year

Phelps should be pretty decent this year, I really hope they can aleast have a winning record and get into the playoffs. They lost their best player in the RB last year but they O-line is huge this year and will make up for the lost RB if they are shape and hit the weights in the off season.I Hope they get that 1st ever home playoff game, good luck to Coach Jones and his Hornets this year!

As far as class A Ball goes, they are about the middle of the road. I think they are real close to Pikeville in the average that the khsaa used to classify schools.
So if a Belfry player and a Phelps player were nose to nose, the Phelps kid "wants" it (to win) more than the Belfry kid simply because his school is smaller?

finepoint.... the way I took it is that Phelps players don't have the "advantages" that larger schools do... Granted... ALL the kids probably want to win or they wouldn't be bustin their tails in the heat everyday practicing.... and by ALL I mean any kid who plays extracurricular activities in ANY school in the county. Phelps has some awesome athletes as do other schools in the county but they just don't have the numbers (enrollment) or the facilities that other schools in the county have. I personally can NOT compare 1 child to another as they are all special...... to be able to get out there and dedicate themselves not only to getting an education but to working their butt off on the field or court for that matter only makes them shine very brightly in my eyes!!

All I'm saying is there is no such thing as a "want-o-meter" out there that can measure if one school wants to win more than another. Just like you can't measure who has more heart. ALL schools want to win and ALL schools think they have more heart than anyone else. I wish the hornets all the best and hope that they can pull together this season and show us what their made of. OK, time for a neutral observer to mediate this.
I looked in the Handbook and couldn't find anything about how the numbers are collected / manipulated (VA's handbook explains it). So, I pulled up some of the KHSAA .pdf files and went through them.
/reports/20062007schoolenrollmenttotalsbyenroll has a column labeled C-boys, and /reports/2006and2007averanegschoolenrollmentbyenroll has a column labeled CY4Boy. These are the same thing - the number of boys in grades 9-12 for the 2006-2007 school year (no averages - actual numbers). Phelps had 172. Now, add in 141 girls in grades 9-12 and their total ACTUAL enrollment was 313, which was 7 less than Raceland and 2 more than Holy Cross. (Jenkins had 211)
So the 20062007schoolenrollmenttotalsbyenroll page has schools in order by total enrollment last year of all kids in grades 9-12... I counted 66 schools with fewer students than Phelps.
So, like I told somebody down in Gate City a few months ago, it doesn't matter how many bodies are in the building (theirs is 10-12), what matters is how many the rules say are to be counted.

At 211, Jenkins is 40th smallest. Remember, this is ALL schools, Academies & Christians included.

Ya know... I think that it's not really the numbers(enrollment) that hurt Phelps but it's the amount of kids that come out to play. There is just not a lot of kids who are interested in playing football. Basketball and dance is another story... :P

UH..... its EVIDENT that they don't want to play AT PHELPS... (I was talking about NO other school FYI) when they don't show up at a practice or sign up to play. I did mean individual players at an individual school NOT the entire 1A school system.... (Hoope that cleared that up for you sandman....).

I think Phelps' 1st team came first and let the 2nd team play a series against the 1st team pound defense.
The score was like 26-14?

Someone told me yesterday that Phelps' two fastest kids are their two biggest on the team. When I say fastest I don't really mean it to mean, that fast.

im sure coach jones will have some production at phelps, if he gets support. he was the best coach powell had seen in years, and no one supported him. if he gets support, and numbers out, phelps will be dangerous. coach jones is smart and knows what he is doing. his defense, is great, offense better when ran to perfection. coach bruce jones is a good coach, and i wish the best of luck to him.

Does anyone know when Jones got his first title ring? Was it with Paris in 1973?

If you are talking about support from the board then we will all be dead before that happens. His situation at Phelps will probably be a forgetable one at most.
