In a game that had all the billing of a state championship, two of the top four teams battled it out on the hardwood tonight in Georgetown. It was senior night at Scott Co and being tradition, they started five seniors of the eight on the team. Two which were normally starters and three which see more limited playing time. This lineup rattled Scott Co at the beginning of the game with Lexington Catholic jumping out to a 9-0 lead halfway through the first quarter. But fouls and a timely technical on the Knights allowed Scott County to gain control eventually tying the game at 20-20. Scott County ended the first half on a 14-5 run with steady defense and timely shooting by Tyler Portwood and Markus Birchfield.
Lexington Catholic was not to be denied though, the Knights caught fire in the third quarter and their 2-2-1 press was more than the Cardinals could handle as they ran off 31 points in the third quarter.
The Knights held control of the game at 62-50 with 5:30 left in the game, but again as these two bluegrass titans matched run for run, Scott County ran off 12 straight to tie the game at 62-62 with 2:00 remaining in the contest. At this point, the refs decided to hold their whistles and let the teams play it out to see who was truly better under pressure. The lead changed hands three times before being tied again at 66-66.
But on this night, the Knights were not to be denied as thier press was truly the difference in tonights game. The Cardinals must have turned it over at least 12 times against the press, they really had no answer tonight. Crucial turnover coming with 15 seconds left as the Knights led 68-66, a couple of free throws clinched the game at 70-66 with nine seconds remaining.
The 11th regional tournament is going to be phenominal this year as their is really no clear cut leader amongst Scott Co, Lex Cath and Bryan Station. Two of these teams have to draw into one side of the bracket with the other having a clearer path to the finals.

These could possibly be the top two teams in the state.

When these two get together it always seems to be a really good game.

The 11th region tournament will once again have more great teams than the Sweet 16.
