I'll say no, just simply based that some schools wouldn't be able to field a team every season.

Yea Its very true. I know when East Ridge was built it was built with the county's only offical soccer filed at the time (now I think Belfry is offical too) but now we just use it as a football practice field. Just a waste of money if you ask me.

No, there isn't much interest in soccer in Eastern Kentucky, it seems like the city & large schools are the only ones that actually have soccer teams.

I dont think it will ever become big in eastern KY

It isn't very big right now but it is growing and at a rapid pace. Over the past 5 years there have been 7 schools add soccer programs in this area. Started out with Pikeville and grew from there. With that said ONCE you have this generation of kids that DO play soccer stick around here it will grow more. It will take time just as soccer has in the entire United States. From what a Belfry assistant was telling me Haywood is nervous about losing many of his kids to the soccer program at Belfry. I think it would be nice to have a soccer program in every school in this area but it will NEVER happen. I play soccer and I think it is one of the greatest sports. People in this area just do not understand the rules or concepts of the game to like it.

I like soccer. It's the up and coming sport in the US right now. I think it's a good chance for kids who don't play football get a chance to play a different sport during the winter. They can do it to condition for basketball or whatever other sport they want to play. I think all schools should have it.

South Laurel who was once a powerhouse state wide back in my high school days. They made the elite eight 3 of the 4 years and the final 4 once.

I think that they should! But there are some schools that would struggle to field a team because of size and competing sports. But it is a good alternative sport for many kids, it isn't overly expensive, and it certainly gets kids in shape! lol

only expensive thing is a good pair of cleats will run you about 150-200 dollars mine I wear right now were 230. Then I have 3 others that I use which all cost between 130-200. LOL

Even if every high school in the mountains had a team, when they went to state IMO they wouldn't be very competitive at all against some of the big city schools such as Lexington Catholic and Trinity of Louisville

that is why we need to get in place good recreational soccer with GOOD AND QUALIFIED COACHES NOT PARENTS. I for one have now took over a U 19 team and we train just like some of the top teams in the NAIA such as Lindsey Wilson and University of the Cumberlands. Having such coaches as Paula Neto of Cumberland coming in and doing camps will do nothing but improve the abilities of the existing coaches and players which has already begun to take place. Like I said it is a slow and gruling process but it is on the up rise. One thing I have noticed a lot in Pikeville is now parents are pushing their kids at an early age to play soccer rather than football, if we can get coaches in the programs that are dedicated and push the kids to get better while still making it fun then EVENTUALLY the high schools will be able to compete with the upstate schools. Also like I have said before South Laurel was once one of the top programs in the state and was competitive against the likes of Catholic, Manual, Dunbar, Danville and Trinity.

Another thing is a lot of people around this area will not even given soccer a chance simply because they do not think its entertaining. If ppl would give it a chance take the time and learn the rules and concepts of the game then they would understand why things go the way they do. Most people are like why don't they try to score more and its because you must posses the ball to win games. Soccer is a lot of making shapes and then breaking down the defense by doing that. Scoring in soccer is a slow process most ppl think they could get out there and score 5 goals so easy, and it is those people that I look at and laugh b/c they would probably take one touch and it would fly 10 feet inf ront of them to a defender.

Why do you hate it?I dont know, I just never have liked it. When I play, its just to boring for me. I guess so big of a field and so much space between everyone not enough action.

I understand where you all are coming from, when I watched soccer for the first time I thought it was boring as well. But, once I started playing and figured out how the game is supposed to be played I came to like it really quick. I guess its because when I am watching it I am thinking to my self what ppl need to be doing or what could happen a certain situation so I occupy my self while watching it. Now I have been to MLB, NBA, NFL and NHL games and nothing tops a good foreign professional soccer game when you are actually there. When I went to Brazil for 10 days to train for soccer we went to a pro soccer match and it was insane. The flares were going off, the chants, the drums ppl bring in. Of course the home team had to lose so there was a riot out side the stadium after the game and us Americans had to be escorted out. Oh and another funny story about that game coach told us we HAD to wear black/white b/c its was the homes teams colors IF we had wore blue chances are we would have got jumped b/c that was the other teams colors. It was insane!!!

Yeah they do my girl friend played for them this past season but will be graduating. They use to be very very good, but the team has kind of went down hill on both sides due to graduation classes have been very high.

It's a sport that is being overlooked a lot at Eastern KY Schools which is not in the best interest of the kids. In the three years we have been involved in the soccer program at Pike Central, the number of kids to receive offers of scholarship money for soccer is in the double digits. If you add all the other sports together, I won't say for certain, but I am pretty sure we have had more kids to get college scholarship money than all the other sports combined. Soccer is not as popular here and therefore the competition for scholarships is not as stiff. Right now it's a great way to get help with school and to be a collegiate athlete.

Yeah. A couple years back, Powell had a foreign exchange student from Brazil that played soccer. We convinced him to come out for football, and after that he was nailing the football through the uprights. He was a good soccer player. The name was Hugo Buonora.

The schools should see if there is enough interest from the students to have a team and if it's there, they should offer a team.

Corbin's soccer program has been on the upswing and won the region for the first time last year before losing in the state playoffs. They have scheduled 5 top 25 teams for this year including Tates Creek, Ryle, Danville, Montgomery Co. and Madison Central to try and continue to elevate the program.

Yes corbin has done a nice job of elevating its standard of play over the past few years. They are very young right now which is good for them, the region has slacked of in talent unfortunately. The 5 teams you mentioned however will allow them to step it up a notch. Also I would like to say congrats to BJ Vann of Corbin on signing to play at the University of the Cumberlands. The coaching staff is amazing, if you read this remember though do not make the mistake that I did. Make sure your school comes b-4 soccer or you will lose that opportunity to play for Neto.

Soccer might not be the most popular sport in Eastern Kentucky, but the young males and females should have the opportunity to participate in the sport. In others words, I say yes.

There are a couple of other players who will be seniors this coming season that are considering playing at Cumberland. Corbin will be attending Neto's team camp next month down at Cumberland.

letcher central has a good start to compete in soccer. The second year we was runner up in the district. Had the most wins in region and lost in ot to perry central. We have a rec legue, jr soccer program. They are using the old high school baseball field. They made it into a nice field.

There is no way that is true mate. Corbin and South Laurel both had more wins also I am sure Perry did as well.

LCC has had a good start but when looking at there REC league situation it is looking grim right now. Floyd County dismantled both U 19 teams. Honestly one of the U 19 coaches in Letcher never needs to coach again for some of the things he allowed when they played Floyd. Which if I am not mistaking is the high school coach as well.

That is great to hear mate. If you are a parent of a player on corbins team or a player. Listen to me now make sure those kids understand you must go in with an open mind and do not get aggravated if you mess up. It will be one of the best weeks of soccer you'll ever play. Its a blast but at the same time Neto makes it fun. It is all about work ethic, if you have it you will get much better.
