After a emergency site base meeting was called last night the word is out. BUTCHER IS LEAVING PIKE CENTRAL. All I have to say is wow and IMO a jerk move on his part after what all the school has done for him. Oh well all i have to say is I knew he would do this to us anyways was just a matter of time. To bad it only took him 3 seasons.
Whats your alls take on this? Who do you think will be the next coach?

WOW! i honestly did not see that at all... are there any word of any potenial replacements....? i am really suprised by this... :****happe
I knew this was happening 2 days ago.
Certain people in the Central office wanted him out.
Look for Tussey to come back or a former player under Tussey to take over.

Not a jerk move from what I hear Butcher's wife got fired from her job and she went and found a job and Butcher will be taking the head coaching job at Mason County so IMO he did what he had to do.

I hope that it was his decision and he was not pushed out. If you can have the record he has had the last two seasons and still get pushed out then whoever does take the job should know that if they dont win the region they are gone

lets not even go there lol...Well i understand the whole wife situation with her losing her job. However, with the pull that many supporters at PC have all he would have had to do was talk to someone. Now i know for a fact she only lost her job with in the last two weeks NOOOOOOO WAY is a school going to be like hey Butcher come coach us now. Its been in the works and I have thought it and kinda known since before the LIT.

Did she work in the school system? I agree; even though he's done well there, no school can get rid of a coach and get another one hired that fast.

You have a good point but I think Butcher was probally offered the job and with the wife losing hers probally made him think that he should take it.The only one who really knows what happen though was him.

I honestly think a lot of this has to do with McCoy no longer being principal at Pike Central IMO i think he would have left either way this year just by some of the conversations we have had.
Now the job will be advertised beggining Monday and i have no idea who will get it. As of now they have no one in mind so it will be interesting. Someone made the comment earlier that it will be Tussey or one of her former ball players. By the conversations that we have had over the past few years she has no interested in coaching again, and besides Stiltner there is no other player that is a teacher so that theory is shot.

Pike Central has a good tradition, and any coach would be happy to work there. However, if politics are that big a part of it, then a wise coach would be wary. I know that McCoy and the Butchers are "in together", and I'm also aware that every school has politics, but I hope Stephen wasn't forced out. He's done too good of a job for that, but then again, Tammy Tussey did a good job as well. So who really knows? Sticky situation.

It was POLITICS the reason he is out, and then again maybe he is doing what is best for him and his wife. Yes, he was a decent coach, but look at the talent he has had the last three years, this was Tammy Tussey foundation. Talents will make any coach look good. I wish him and his wife the best. But don't forget about POLITICS rule the system.

These are the players who played under Tussey:
yes, Haley
Kayla Lowe, Abby Coleman, Kayla Ratliff, when Holly and Hannah were in 6th and 7th grade they also played on B team under Tussey.
I wasn't trying to make anyone defensive, I'm just saying that most of the girls played under Tussey from grade school up till she was forced out. I said Butcher is a decent coach and good person, but still it was talent.

first let me say thanks to coach butcher, kara, and his staff. he ran a class program and had the respect of the players, we will miss them. now to the tussey thing. kayla ratliff never played for her, hannah and holly were on the team at a very young age but i don't think you can give her credit for their sucsess. i think there were about 8 or 9 girls there when coach mercer had her first meeting, so you tell me whos team it was.last thing i want to say is i don't blame coach butcher for doing whats best for his family, The Central office at the board wanted him gone last year and got it this year. i just hope we don't get another programs problems, be fair to the kids and find them a good , classy, winning coach!!!

It wasn't the school administration that forced him out it was ppl at the board which ticks me off. The reason I was upset at first was b/c Butcher and I are really close and it just felt he was walking out on the school and program and I apologize for the first statement. He is a great person and after talking to him on the phone he really wishes it could be different even took it as far to invite me to the banquet. Now he will be coaching at Mason next year and that was not in the works UNTIL AFTER his wife had lost her job, a meeting with a few people and the Boys Sweet Sixteen. The person who has ran him off has had a personal Vendetta against Pike Central since McCoy became principal. Once again everyone it was NOT his decision and I apologize for the first statement my emotions got the best of me just as they have for all of you at some point in time. We say things we do not mean and I did this but Butcher and Cara have both forgave my negligence. I LOVE BUTCHER AND HIS WIFE WITH EVERYTHING IN ME AND IT IS GOING TO BE HARD TO SEE THEM GO CONSIDERING THE CIRCUMSTANCES. ABSOLUTELY NOT TRUE!Tussey built that team from jr. high up! NONE OF THOSE PLAYERS CAME TO PHELPS...
So with that statement you should say your sorry for that to those girls like ,Coleman, Pennington ,Ratliff ,Harris and Thompson
Butcher came into play with an already well coached team. handed to him on a silver platter. and now that his "coaching" ability HAS to be used for the lady hawks...he can't ..lol plain and simple.he doesn't know how or want to rebuild a team of his own...as for Haley Ratliff being better because of butcher??? come on now....really! she had been well coached wayyyyyy before butcher...

I just wanted to say again, I wish Coach Butcher and his wife all the best at Mason County, I hope that he has just as good talent there as he did at PC. Yes, I agree with everyone that Coach Butcher is a class act person and he is a good and decent person. He will do well where ever he is at.
As everyone should know, most school systems is all about POLITICS and that is so sad, but that is the way it is. It was the same thing that happened to Tussey now is happening to Butcher. Two good coaches gone.
You know it doesn't matter who played under who, all we can say is that Pike Central Girls Basketball was built from the ground up with two good coaches and the program has been great. I hope that it will continue with the new coach coming in.
Yes, our emotions can get the best of us in certain situations and we do say things and don't mean it that way or comes out the wrong way. But regardless PC has lost two great coaches in my opinion.

Well then you should not make a statement like that unless you are willing to back it up with something. Generally an employee does a job, and then the employer pays said employee for services rendered. If employee does what his job function describes, and the employer then pays said employee for services rendered, then all should be fair and square on both sides at the end of the day, and then neither party is indebted to the other. Would that not be correct?

Tussey developed Haley, Stafford developed Lowe, Phelps developed Slone. These Jr. High programs develop these players but it takes a good coach to develop the team. His record speaks for itself. How long was Tussey there? What did she do in all of those years? Speaking of getting a team handed on a silver platter, you speak so highly of your coach who just received the same thing.

You wouldn't call that being forced out? He and one of the BOE members sat down and the agreement was IF he went to Kimper and worked half a day then he would be promised the tenure that he needed for job security. The way I am taking it just right before the girls state tournament he was brought into a board member office was sat down and told "I do not remember saying it like that, maybe you should find something more secure." So at the state tournament Mason Co. approached him about the coaching job. He took a visit with Mason Co. and that is where he will be going. I think you can go ahead an put that down after what all has happened with 3 coaches being forced out in the past two year. Starting off with Josh Pierece (spelling), his wife Savannah (tennis coach) and now Stephen Butcher. For years we all have known that once WAGNER got in office Pike Central was going to be walking the plank. The only thing he has done since he has been office is made sure the new Elementary school was built which was not his complete doing.

Tussey took them to two state tournaments both in which they lost in the first round. Now Haley was a great player when Tussey was heading up the program. However, I just believe we saw a big change in her in the last to years of her high school carrier. It was no longer the underclassmen Haley Ratliff show but was a team. Once Butcher got a hold of her she was a complete player.

This will be the last I speak of it. We might should start a new thread. He had to overcome quite a bit? What? Coach Campbell didn't have the opportunity to coach the Riley kid. If she had her they would have had a winning season. His coaching ability will be proven once riley, hall, pruitt, whitt leave. By that time he will have had two years to build the program. Until then, he is just coaching what she built and what people bring in. Doing what you were criticizing Coach Butcher for.
However, staying on topic, it's a shame for this to happen to Coach Butcher. It doesn't matter if people like him or not, the BOE shouldn't play games with peoples livelihood. I wish him the best at Mason County. In a few years, he will look back and see they actually did him a favor by giving him to opportunity to leave Pike Co. And the pits of @@@@ await those who mistreat people like that.

John Blackburn and Frank Welch was responsible for the new school and you can mark that down.
Until Waggner and his cronies are gone this will continue to happen in Pike County
Oh i completely agree with all of that I was just making the statement that at least Wagner did not take that away from us lol. Blackburn and Welch did a lot for our school system even though there was politics in that regime as well. But not nearly as much.

Please don't feel honored. I find it hard to believe you don't know much when it comes to politics. Just because I have an opinion doesn't mean I have knowledge of the ins and outs. People shouldn't be so quick to criticize coaches, me included. Half of the people commenting against Coach Butcher have no idea the time he spent with those girls. He has to be given credit for their success. Tammy should be given some credit as well. Their jr. high coaches, little league coaches, parents, etc. It's not all one person because of success, nor is it all one person because of failure. Coach Butcher did an excellent job no matter what he inherited.

It is amazing to me how you guys put down Wagger. Welch and Dotson did the same things when they were in there.I hate to see any coach get done bad but what goes aroud comes around.Tussey did a fine job and McCoy took it from her and gave it to Butcher that is a fact. Many coaches want a team that is already built because it is hard to build a program. Pike County is known for doing coaches wrong. When one adm. does a coach wrong and they are on your side life is good but when the wheels are turned life is not fair, give me a break! The right thing to do is give the job back to Tussey.I know Wagger and he is a good man!!:D

I think they should look at their assitants first before the hire anyone. Mercer could coach that team and be quite successful.
I think if Tussey doesn't want it then you will see Amanda Collins there. I wouldn't be suprised if Bobby Spears doesn't try to get it. Also some of the assistant coaches in the region will apply.

I agree with you fox also considering she is now teaching at Belfry or rather was not sure if she still is or not. I wouldn't be surprised to see Heather Birchfield wife to Phillip who was once an assistant to the boys program last year being the run into the regional championship losing to ER. They have always talked about wanting the job and now that it is open I would love to see her apply for it having him helping her. If this happens you can guarantee to see the old boys crew on the bench with the exception of David Rowe which was one heck of a group of guys and coaches. Now with that said Heather has had previous coaching experience as an assistant at Belfry where she played her high school ball. She has an excellent eye and mind for the game. That is one who I will be looking to apply for the job.

my bad then Fleming Neon lol...But she was one heck of a coach while helping at Belfry if I am not mistaking she coaches under Cindy while Cindy was at Belfry. It has been a while since she has coached but she and Phillip make it to just about all the games and have a really close connection with the players and school. IMO that would be a good move, it would give some stability keeping ppl that have connections with the school in the system and like Hawk Rules said we need a good defensive coach which is what Heather and Phillip focus on more than anything.

Mercer is no longer at Belfry. She was put back at Pike Central at the beginning of this year. I would like to find another athletic program in the Pike County district that had an asst. coach jerked out one season, shipped to their archrival, and then the next season the head coach is made itinerant between two schools. But you know what? You won't find one. And yet still...both years they made it to the regional finals.

Yeah, Josh Preece, Susanna (sp?) Collins, Stephen Butcher, and David LaRocco all lost their coaching jobs in the past few years. I have no idea why. All of these mentioned were unbelievable! I miss all of them and wish them the best. I really hope someone deserving gets it, and keeps it!!

He went to the final four. He obviously did something right. It doesn't matter if he inherited a good team or bad team, look at what he did with them.
On the other note, he didn't get that awesome 5 win team. He got them and the Riley kid who could add 8-10 wins for any 5 win team. Barring any more "transfers" we'll see where they are in two years.

I hope we are in a good position. The young girls we have coming up are talented and with continued work on the fundamentals we should be o.k. I just hope the girls learn the proper way to play basketball, learn some life skills, how to deal with adversity, and above all - HAVE FUN. Is winning and losing important, in the overall scheme of things no, its not life and death, it is just a game. I am just here to teach young kids how to play a game! lol Bird would never do it, he is about done with helping with basketball any ways I would say this year was his last season. Now Fields is a GREAT guy and a really good coach I had the opportunity to help him in the ladder part of the Boys season at Mullins. The only thing that worries me is he is VERY young and his experience is VERY low. He does know the game and I think a high school job may be what he needs. Especially at Pike Central where the girls listen well and have A LOT of respect for who is around them. He did one heck of a job at turning the programs around at Mullins so it could be interesting. I do know they have had many people apply from out of the area, but these coaches do a lot of jumping around and the programs that they are at do not have very good reputations just hear say though. IMO Fields will get the job, Coomer and Mercer will stay on as assistants and it will all work out and the Lady Hawks will be back in the regional semis and hopefully the finals.

Well, I certainly don't think this new coach is starting off on good grounds by being on a cruise while PC is in team camp at Shelby Valley. Prior obligation or not, you just don't leave the assistants holding the reins. I've already heard several team members and others complaining. I'm sure he has good reasoning but he's been in coaching long enough to know dead period is the time to plan vacations.
Butch should still be at PC and I hope someday "super"man gets his payback for letting a good coach go elsewhere.

Why not allow the assitants to coach? No better way for them to understand and learn. If you know anything at all about summer ball you would know that a great deal of coaches allow assistants to coach and learn during the summer. Let someone else yell and push them in the summer. There will be plenty of coach ing to do during the season.

greatest post by you yet Hawk Head. I think it is a good thing for the girls to have some normalcy for the first couple of weeks. I am sure Gary told Mercer and Coomer what to do with them and things and I am sure they took that into consideration when coaching the girls. I think it is a great idea to let Mercer and Coomer coach these girls up with there is trust there and I think it will take a little while for them to trust Gary's schemes. As soon as Gary got back to Pikeville if I am not mistaking he took right off with the team to RIchmond. Correct me if I am wrong. But I agree with you HH let the assistants have some time with the teams through June. Heck David Rowe did and he is regarded as one of the best coaches in the 15th to never win a regional title. Doesn't mean your a bad coach or your heart isn't in the right place.
