View Full Version : OSU and Gillispie: Should we be getting nervous?

Today, Kansas coach Bill Self made a public announcement stating that he will NOT become the next coach at Oklahoma State. OSU has made their second choice clear, it will be Billy Gillispie. After this new finding, what has been rumor has become truth. OSU will be pursuing Gillespie. Gillispie has stated several times that he likes challenges and is known for rebuilding programs. Those attitudes sound like the OSU job might catch his eye. Can money lure our coach away from the most historic school in college basketball?

One year is not near enough rebuilding here. I don't think he's going anywhere.

What do you think he is in the process of doing at UK...... That would be called rebuilding.

It's pretty safe to say that in the next couple of days we will be hearing more on the matter from the media. As soon as anybody finds anything out please let us know. Please let it be fact not opinion and provide the website where you acquired your information for the rest of us to view.

If Gillispie was to take the OSU job then who takes over at Kentucky

Its scary to think this. Would Billy leave for the money? I'm leading towards no on this one, but then again, there is alot of money involved in this.

I actually feel more comfortable, if Gillispie left now, than I did last year at this time. Last year we struck out on Donovan and Barnes before hiring Gillispie. Last year we didnt have a coach who had been associated with UK basketball to choose from. Now that Pelphrey and Ford have proven themselves at somewhat major basketball schools, I feel much much better that we would be in good hands should Gillispie leave. Do I want him to leave? **** no, IMO hes well on pace to lead us back to the promise land. Do I think there are other great coaches out there willing to come to UK and also lead us there? Last year, NO but now YES. Bring on John or Travis if Gillispie leaves!!! I honestly dont see us missing a beat.

Exactly how much money is involved?

LetcherCentral23
04-10-2008, 11:54 PM
Well.. They were offering Self a 6 million dollar sign-on bonus and 4 million per year..... If thats not what they offer Gillispie I'm sure it will be a similar amount.

Boone Pickens will get the amount he wants... if he wants gillespie badly enough, he will offer him anything... money isn't a concern with this man....

Well heres one fan that everybody already knows hopes Gillispie leaves, in fact I hope he gets out as fast as he can, but I dont think he will be going anywhere, sadly. ** Thats not the point here though, this is, this guy is nowhere near close to leading UK back to anything resembling a championship. I say bring on Pelphrey, please, or Ford either one, someone with some ties to UK, and lets send this guy back to the Big 12 where he needs to be. Side note here, am I the only one that sees him as a phony, especially the passion he supposedly has for everything UK. He just seems like someone that will say whatever it takes to make himself look good. I hear him on the radio sometimes and see him on that stupid coaches show of his and he just seems so retarded, excuse me, mentally handicapped. I for one have had enough of his phony behind and welcome his departure from UK. If it happens, he should take the AD with him.

That is correct. He has already given OSU's athletic department almost 200 million dollars over ther last few years and he is almost as passionate towards the OSU basketball program as he is with his business interests. He showed Sean Sutton the way out the door just this year, and helped daddy do the same, after he embarrassed himself and the university.

If any of you guys think that guys like Billy Gillispie and 99 % of the other major college coaches are nothing more than just hired guns, with loyalty to only #1, then you are very naive.

OSU has already came out and said they will not pursue Gillispie. Said they didn't like his background. They are going after Stallings from Vanderbilt now.

All the other coaches? We barely had to try. We got our second choice. You think Billy D would stay at Florida if we offered him now?

When Sutton left if you remember Rick Pitino was not the #1 choice either. Lute Olsen turned UK down too, and the best I remember there was someone else that was contacted before Pitino. He was at mimimun UK's third choice. Matter of fact Olsen turned UK down twice.

What is different, or what has changed that would make Donovan want to come now?

Really, if Gillispie ever leaves, it going to be John Pelphrey anyways. The only other possibility might be Travis Ford. I'll place my money on Pelphrey.

RavenBoy

All it is, is that if you dont win at UK you will be kicked out. If you win 2 championships with florida, why would you leave? He will never get kicked out of there now.

I don't see him leaving because he hasn't met his challenge of rebuilding at Kentucky. Plus it would hurt his recruiting credibility. As for the money, it may be more, but it isn't like he is starving at UK. lol

Would be very surprised to see him take it, but if he does, there are other good coaches out there we could get. Life goes on either way.

Either Pelphrey or Travis Ford would be the common sense top two candidates.

I don't see Billy G going anywhere right now, he likes the challenge and I think he really likes the fact that he is coaching the best program in college basketball history. If you remember when they introduced him as head coach he said he felt like he was coming to the Yankees of College Basketball, but if it comes down to the money and he leaves I see John Pelphrey getting the job. I would rather him than Travis Ford to be honest, but I hope Billy stays.

Oh I definitely agree, I just think we need someone who knows what it means to be a C-A-T-S as well as knowing the tradition of UK basketball.
