I just don't think a coach should have this job. An A.D. is a good candidate, or even a school administrator, but a coach I don't think should have any say where these officials go. I understand he doesn't coach basketball, but at the same time he is still a coach at that school. It's obviously just my opinion, but I just don't think that is a job for a head coach.

Shawn will do an excellent job. He and Mr. Lyons would have both been an excellent choice but Shawn got the nod and I just want to say congrats. He has been the best official that I have seen call in the 15th in several years. He coaches baseball and I don't think that will have any impact on his decision making skills. Well deserved assingment, Congrats Shawn!! I know that you will do a great job.

He coaches baseball, not basketball. He is a seasoned basketball official and probably has as good a background in officiating as anyone. The Assigning Secretary should be a referee not an AD. AD's need to make sure their teams do well. This is a good choice.

Finally a post that makes sense! Why would anyone want an AD that has no experience in officiating to be the assigning secretary in a region that already has questionable officiating. Hopefully Mr. Hall will train the ones we have now, recruit some good young officials, and hopefully lure some of the old ones back in, hint..hint...Mr. Blankenship, Mr. Conn, Mr. Hurley, etc.

Yea I know what he coaches. If an A.D. shouldn't be aloud to do this than a head coach for a competing team shouldn't be aloud either. I know it is basketball but he is in the athletic department and he is also involved with football as well. I think it was more of a matter of not wanting Pike county to run everything anymore. They just wanted this type of advantage for their school. So they recruited everyone they could and filled them full of whatever they had to tell them to get them to vote the other way. I just don't like the way it was done. I hope he does it fair, but who knows what's fair anymore.

Didn't say he shouldn't be allowed, just that, IMO, AD's wouldn't make the best assigning secretary. Officials should be! Wonder why they wouldn't want Pike Co to control everything? You said it yourself, they want an advantage--are you saying Pike County has had this advantage in the past? How was it done? Didn't every school in the 15th Region get a vote? Seems 9 + 7 = 16 and I do believe that is the number of schools in the 15th. I really believe Shawn will be fair and do a good job...

They really didn't have an advantage last year because the secretary was un-biased. This year I can't see him being fair. There are certain people in Johnson County who are well thought of and well respected who really pushed for him to get it. They wanted to keep it out of Pike County's hands, and for that matter I don't blame them, but since he is still a "Head Coach" in a participating school system I just don't think it's right. Like I said though that is just my opinion. Everybody is going to be on different sides of this fence, and that i just my side on it.

It doesn't have anything to do with hate for Pike County. However, the 15th region is derived from a lot more than just Pike County and for a long while now Pike County has wanted to control most aspects of athletics in the 15th. That's all.

In my observation, Pike County doesn't want to control anything. It just so happens that Pike County has more schools, Six.
Numerically that gives the county more, not total, control due to number of votes.
That is if one is looking at the region as divided by county lines.
BTW...anyone else heard the rumor that "promises" were broken in regard to the assigning secretary hiring??? And that the realignment plan may now be up for a revote???

Does anyone think that this will give Johnson Central an unfair advantage? I do agree that Pike County has always had the control of the 15th region, but I for one am glad that even though it may unfair for Johnson County, Pike County will not have the unfair advantage anymore. Futhermore, anyone thqt can sit there and say that Pike County hasn't had an unfair advantage must be living in Pike County. You want proof, 6 teams in Pike County - 2 districts. 5 teams in 4 counties - 1 districts. Realignment proprosal still benefited Pike Co. 4 teams still would have made it to the region. I know youre gonna say "well the 5 team district was gonna get 3" but the 3rd team would still have to win a play in game. BOTTOM LINE EVERY 15TH REGION CHAMPIONSHIP HAD TO GO THROUGH PIKE COUNTY. And even with this, it still may have to go.

Because it has the largest population, and the most amount of schools.
It also helps that Pikeville, Virgie, Belfry, and Shelby Valley all put together pretty good streaks in the past 50 years with only Paintsville having any answer to the dominance.

You'll not find a better man to help. I don't blame Bubby for not calling games this year because it's not FUN to him anymore. It's been the Buddies system for the last time. You have to have your top people to represent you durning District and Regionals by the ratings not who is SUCKING up to the assigning secretary. The Buddies calling him everyday sucking up so they can get better games. It's great to have men who will do a good job and do it fair. Why do you think the better officals QUIT...Good help is hard to find. From what I was told the OFFICALS are glad that there has been a change. Good luck

You don't hire principals unless they have some experience dealing with kids. Why would you vote in someone in this position who has never had the experience or dealings with referees. Come on, Common sense goes a long way. The FEW who hate change, make everything miserable for the rest of us. I was never questioning his integrity or that he wasn't the best option for this job. If I did make it sound that way I didn't mean to. The only thing I was/am concerned with is the fact that he not only coaches football, but is the Head Coach for the baseball team, who is a very competitive team every year and it takes year around to develop that. I can't believe you actually think that. So teaching, football, baseball, and now this. To me it's just too much. No principal I have ever seen puts in the time and effort most coaches do. They work later, put in more hours on weekends, and they are at it year around. I don't know any principal that does that. I am only speaking about the successful programs, we all know that some coaches don't do jack and just take their 1,500 bucks and head to the house. Shawn actually does I think, and this will be too much. It's just my opinion though, you can have yours as well.

You know, somebody has to do this job. It would be very difficult to find somebody who has no ties whatsoever with a particular school. Shawn is/was an excellent official. This job should be done by someone who has officiating experience who can help younger officials. I have yet to see an assigning secretary blow the whistle to decide a game. Most people are making a much bigger deal than is necessary. How can the A.S. help schools? By giving them the better officials? Look around, you can practically count the good officials on one hand.

All this bickering over whether a coach or athletic director should be assigning is really boring.
And why does EVERY thread end up being about politics within the region???
Anyone interested in making officiating in the 15th Region better???
Why not start making phone calls and help Shawn recruit new officials??
Why not encourage some young former players to get registered??
Recruiting, training, scheduling, and evaluating...there is plenty of work to be done.

I can agree with that. The 15th region has some of the worst officials in the state. I actually heard from another umpire/referee that the districts in the region are going to have to get umpires from around the state to help out with the tournaments because there is only 8 officials that can do baseball in the 15th region as far as the tournaments go. Do you know anything about that?
