The 15th Region basketball tournament could have a very different look next season. In a move that was suggested by the khsaa and ratified by the 15th region policy board.
The 59th and 60th districts will be combined into 1 "super" district. When regional tournament play comes about, either 9 or 10 teams will make the tournament

I wonder what khsaa reasoning is for doing this, are other regions doing this as well?

I think it was mainly because of this past season. The 60th is weak, we all know that, and all 3 teams from the 59th deserved to be in, so this is the solution they came up with, and the 59th also only has 3 teams, so they're trying to even it out, but I'd say the competition from the 59th plays more of a factor than equivalence.

Has NOTHING to do with how "weak" the 60th is or how "strong" the 59th is. The superintendent of Pike County wants to have all county teams play each other to try and help with the rising expenses of travelling outside of the county to find opponents. This will also possibly renew or create some new rivalries within the county. This decision was not based on one season. This is an exciting thing and most of the coaches are excited about it as well.

I heard a little about this on WYMT last night but didn't catch enough of it to know quite what will happen. Does anyone know how this will affect the 57th and 58th? In other words which teams will be in the regional?

The 57th will now get 3 teams in the tournament and the 58th will get 3, Piarist is having a boys team and they are alredy on some of the 58th teams schedule. They are the 5th team in the 58th next year. Pike County gets 4 teams as they always have. Not everyone will like the change but there were about 11 or 12 schools that did. It passed the KHSAA by about 16-2 and will probably stay this way.

Thanks for the info. Do you know what will determine which teams go to the regional? Will it be the 1,2, & 3 teams in the district tournament as one would expect or is there another criteria involved?

That would be the absolute last reason they would do this. Do you think teams in Lexington don't deserve to "be in"? That is the whole point of a district tournament, to eliminate some teams before region. :)

The only reason I would think they would want all 3 59th teams to get in is because they don't all 3 have to play 2 district games to get into region, so they want to make it more of a challenge than just giving a bye game.

The district tournament determines who is in. I don't ever recall anything ever being said about the strength or weakness of the 59th and 60th. The KHSAA was going to make a move and the realignment of the region was what the majority of schools wanted. I didn"t think it was the perfect solution but it wasn't all that bad either.

Here's a thought.

How about putting Johnson Central, Paintsville, Lawrence Co and Magoffin Co in the 57th; Prestonsburg, Allen Central, South Floyd and Piarist in the 58th; Pikeville, East Ridge, Shelby Valley and Betsy Layne in the 59th; Belfry, Pike Central, Sheldon Clark and Phelps in the 60th.

Play each team in your district for seeding of the District Tourny.
Play your District Tourny for seeding of the Region.
Have all 16 15th Region in the Regional Tourny.
That only adds one more round to the Regional Tourny.
Brings in more money which will make the Expo and Pike Co Board happy.
Allows all teams that chance at a Cinderella run.
Eliminates the chance of that one bad game in the District to eliminate a good team.

JUST A THOUGHT!

How does the 15th Region get different rules than everybody else in the state?

It's the most insane move I've seen in high school sports. They should have simply added a team or two and kept four districts.

Thank you, that's exactly what I've been saying all along. It's absolutely ludicrous that the 15th region is going by different rules than the rest of the state. And I still haven't seen any good explanation of how the district numbering will go. Just 57th, 58th, 59th... then jump to the 61st?

This whole setup only reinforces the idea held by the rest of the state that our region is comprised of a bunch of dumb hillbillies.

I think this will make the 15th regional tournament much more iteresting. With realignment coming I think this is a good move.
