I'm a Rebel Fan all the way, but not a Sis Hall fan. I can't imagine what Johnny Martin did to deserve this. Basketball will never be the same at Allen Central- thank you Johnny for all the years and all the dedication and love you put into this program.

this just goes to show that someboby in the Floyd County school system has no respect for a man that has been one of the top coaches not only in the mountains but in the state. One would think that someone winning 500 games would be allowed to decide when its time to leave the sideline. John Martin is an outstanding coach and to receive this treatment is a black mark on Allen Central and Floyd County. Wonder if Larry Dean Maynard had anything to with this, seems he wants to coach every team at ACHS. Never more will I attend a Rebels home game. John deserved better.

This is a complete shock and a disappointment. Coach Martin was a great coach for the 15th Region to have and one that I have always respected. He was always nice and polite to me and I have been a supporter of his for a long time. I hate to see someone of his calibur go out in this way. It would have been much better if he could have gone out the way he wanted to and on his own terms. It is a great loss for the 15th Region!!

The principal should be the on to go instead of Coach Martin. Its a sad day when someone like Coach Martin gets forced out because of personal issues not coaching issues. Great coach and even better person, AC will never be the same. i'd expect to see him on the sidelines somewhere next season, he wont go out like this.

I agree, this is a TRAVESTY....just plain SAD! I also agree that the Principal should be the one to go, not Coach Martin. Since she removed Johnny as AD a few years back and replaced him with Maynard it has been headed in this direction. I am even further shocked that the Superintendent, Henry Webb, would allow this. This is just an example of the kinds of things that go on in Floyd County. To have this happen is a DIRTY CRYING SAD SHAME. I hope Allen Central never wins another game of basketball-boys or girls........I also hope Johnny Martin sues the pants off of them for this. He has been harassed and abused since she took the AD job from him.

It is a shame that this has happened, but we have all been dreadfully awaiting this day for a long time now. Coach Martin was as many times said one of the greatest coaches to ever grace the sidelines in these mountains and the state as well. But he was an even better person. I remember all of the awesome stories he would tell myself, Josh Martin, Tyler Slone, Ryan Collins, Farley Joseph when we were in P.E. last year. He did great things for Allen Central and it will never be the same without him coaching even with another Martin taking over the helm. For Sis Hall, she has always helped me out for a long time and has been a friend of my family (on both sides). It's a shame that she has wanted him out so bad for this long, but she wasn't the only one at AC that wanted him out, Colonel Maynard had a lot to do with it as well, especially when Sis named him the new AD a few years back. For years and years it always comes up in the off-season that Johnny was going to retire or resign, but he would always come back to coach another year, it's weird that those rumors are now true. I am saddened that Coach will not be back. He gave so much to that school, the community when he hardly got nothing in return.

Never played basketball at Allen Central, although now I wish I had. Johnny is as classy of a guy you will ever meet. He may not show it on the court, but he has earned the respect of players and coaches across the state. He will be missed greatly. To see someone give as much to a school as he gave to AC and to get treated like he did is a shame. We'll miss you, Johnny!

Johnny is one of the better coaches in the state and has been for quite a few years. He is well known all over the state of Kentucky in the basketball circles and has brought forth many positives to the 58th District and the 15th Region. Johnny is both a friend and foe but friend certainly rises above foe. Allen Central has a good group coming back and first let me say they will face new adjustments if this holds true about the changing of the guard. They don't need to be faced with adult decisions and lose their focus on what they are trying to get accomplished. Sometimes kids are brought into situations they are not deserving of. Coach Martin has handled himself with class and I am sure he will continue to do so no matter how this plays out and it appears that the Principal has made the decision which is her and hers alone to change coaches. The Superintendent does not control what a principal has the right to do by law and although one may feel they are controlling it is not true in all things involving the hiring of supplemental positions. Unpopular as this appears in the public eye by not only Allen Central fans but at other schools as well, I would hope that something could be worked out for the best of Allen Central and Johnny as well. I think I have mentioned before that having someone be responsible for a group of young kids is quite a task and there is so much that goes above the coaching in practice and games. Johnny was not perfect and for that being said-who is? I do know that Coach loved Rebel basketball and not only that but the school and its communities as well, He had a special night that teams were invited to play honoring the memory of his Father and who knows if that will continue as well as many other nights that involved AC and Johnny. I am sure there will be calls made and voices heard but again the principal has the choice and it falls back to her. I don't have a thing against Mark Martin but like alot of coaches that assume the duties that follow the good one's he will be compared with Johnny's winning's and this may be a bit overwhelming. 500 on the plus side is top notch and it may be a very long time if ever that the region has another to match it. Friend or foe--- We lost a great one, not just Allen Central.

I did hear from someone inside the school that the job is "97%" Mark's to have. I'll leave that open-ended for other's thoughts on the subject. Mark, good luck if you do decide to take this position. You have the passion and drive for the game and it will show through your players if you can get past the first struggles of filling in the shoes of Johnny Martin...
It's a shame that this "struggle" Sis Hall has had with Johnny for whatever reason has had to play out in front of the kids. It's even more appalling that the kids are used as leverage in this decision. Things like "Johnny has to be inside the school walls" to be the coach or "he was given one more year on his terms last year and he ends up at Betsy Layne". But like it or not, those are the standards AC sets and like others have said, it's Sis Hall's decision and she made it. If you don't like AC's policies concerning coaches teaching at other schools, go to site-based and say something. Site-Based is suppose to represent the will of the parents involved with the school and they made the recommendation to remove Johnny and Sis signed off on it. Does this sound entire incident sound like it was done in the best interest of the kids or certain individuals?
My best to Johnny. I wish you well and you will be missed on the sidelines of Allen Central if this holds to form. But just once, wouldn't it be nice for stories like Johnny's to have a happy ending? 500 wins, championships, building character in young men for over 2 decades. For what? A phone call saying you're no longer a part of the program you love? What a shame.
And so it goes in Floyd County.

SBDM councils cannot/do not make any recommendations for the removal of a coach or teacher. That is the call of the principal. The principal makes the recommendation and the superintendent decides yes or no.

Check the by laws for SBDM councils, that is what they are there for. If they are not making recommendations and the super is deciding yes and no on issues then there is your law suit. I have been on the coucils before and they make all the recommendations for positions, they vote on the recommendations. As a matter of fact i looked some of this info up the other day and the by laws have not changed.

I know of several of his former players who now have better lives due to johnny, becuse they got to compete at the college level and go to school for free(most). some took advantage of it and others didnt. But bottom line is that he sent the following 7 guys that I can think of and a few more that I cant think of, but because of him these kids had a chance to make something of themselve through basketball. By looking at the list some of the kids never would have made it w/out basketball and Johnny.

WOW! Don't know where you were on councils, but the law says the principal consults with the SBDM council prior to recommending the hiring of personnel. Now, consulting may mean telling them who he/she will hire or it may mean an open discussion and then the principal hiring. It is up to the principal to decide that. Ultimately, the principal decides hiring. Some SBDM councils do declare a vacancy, but again, that is up to the principal to consult with them. That is the law.

Principals may consult with their council before making a decision- but the decision is the principals alone. A council may vote 5-0 against something- but if the Principal wants it, she overrules them and gets it.
It wouldn't surprise me to see more of AC's coaches lose their jobs. I hear Mark Martin applied for every head coaching job at AC. Johnny isn't the only coach at AC who was not teaching at ACHS. Footbal Coach Jeremy Hall and Baseball Coach Austin Shelton are both employed at ACMS. You better watch your back coaches.

To clarify my earlier post, it's my understanding that the SBDM was consulted about Johnny and made a recommendation. And yes, the decision was the principal's alone to make.
The reason I brought the SBDM into my first post was because they "should" represent what parents want out of their school. I'm sure the decision to let Johnny go is not what most parents would want.

IT'S OFFICIAL: Per a release from Allen Central High School this afternoon... "Mark Martin has been named the new boys head basketball coach at Allen Central."
FOX SPORTS

Dang, Jamey was all over that!!! Way to go "scoop"!
Here is the release issued by ACHS:
Allen Central High School welcomes Mark Martin as the Boys’ Head Basketball Coach for School Year 2008 – 2009. Mark is an Allen Central Alumnus and played collegiate basketball at Evangel University in Springfield, Missouri where he graduated with a Bachelors of Science degree in Physical Education.
Coach Martin taught and coached boys’ basketball in Nixa, Missouri for five years. He was the junior high team’s coach for three seasons and was promoted to the Boys’ varsity Coach for two seasons where he compiled a 31 – 19 record at the 3A level.
Coach Martin returned to Kentucky in 1994 and worked in the Pikeville Independent School System and coached Pikeville High School boys’ junior varsity basketball for three seasons. Martin also coached the Boys’ and girls’ varsity Cross Country teams for three seasons where his cross country teams won two regional titles and produced two all-state Cross Country runners.
Martin, no stranger to coaching Allen Central varsity basketball, coached the Lady Rebels during the 2003 – 2005 seasons, compiling a 28 – 28 record overall and was defeated in the regional semi-finals during the 2005 season. He was re-hired as the Lady Reb coach during the 2007 – 2008 season and was the Floyd County conference and 58th district runner up.
Coach Martin loves basketball and has a passion for teaching the game. He fully understands the game and works hard, insists on hustle, and teaches the game in a way that improves play and makes it enjoyable.
Coach Mark Martin will continue to establish an ethic of teamwork and maintain that winning is a focal point for the team as a whole with the goal to win as a team and to have fun in the process. Mark is a welcomed addition to the boys’ basketball program at Allen Central.

Whoever wrote the press release should consider a career in politics. Because that's the biggest pile of bull I've read. Sis Hall, AKA "The Puppet Master" is one of the few welcoming him as an addition to the boy's basketball program. Add Mark Martin to her list of puppets- along with her Athletic Director and his Site Base Members. It's all about the control for her. A perfect example is the hiring on Mark Martin last year. She coudln't hire him as Girls Basketball Coach until he was teaching at the school, that's her personal policy. She passed up qualified applicants (who were already teaching at ACHS) and gave the job to the AD. Of course as soon as one of the teachers retired in September- Mark Martin was hired to teach and the AD stepped down as the girls coach, just in time for Mark to begin practice.
Looks to me like some of the administration needs to take a class in ethics.
Shame on each and everyone of them.

Not to harp on the SBDM thingy, but i was on council for 4 years. NOT ONCE, did the principal hire anyone for any position without a consensus of everyone on the council, NOT ONCE was i told to vote for Tom, Dick or Harry. I am to hardheaded to be TOLD how to vote. It's my right. So if this telling how to vote BS is going on, or the Principal is going against the SBDM council recommendations then it's time for a complete makeover starting at the top. But i am sure it is true to form with some principals thats why some schools are still on fantasy island, as in ...its my school i will do what i want, with our kids furtures paying for it. Just to get a little more knowledge anyone can go to KDE, SBDM, Section 160.345, some interesting info there.

Until AC gets rid of Sis Hall they will always be a joke. She has already ruined he baseball program, and now she is working on the basketball program. Mark Martin will do just fine at Allen Central he is a very hard nose coach and will get the most out of all his players. As for the girls team going 8-18 this year if you saw this team at the first of the year then you would realize that this was a major achievement and they also were runners up in the district and went to the regional tournament. He can also develop talent as one of his star players was only a eighth grader and 2 more of his top players coming off the bench were also under classwomen. So give him a chance before we start rating him as a coach. I think Johnny Martin was a great coach for Allen Central and wish him nothing but the best but the decision has been made and there is nothing we can do about it except support the new coach and see what happens. Best of luck to Mark Martin and the Allen Central Rebels and hope you have a good upcoming season you have some big shoes to fill but I for one know you can get the job done.

Until AC gets rid of Sis Hall they will always be a joke. She has already ruined he baseball program, and now she is working on the basketball program. The firing of Ronnie Patton after winning the school's first ever Regional baseball title was a joke and now getting rid of Johnny Martin . Mark Martin may do a fine job but that doesnt justify her decision to get rid of Coach Johnny Martin.
I totally agree, TH. Mark is a fine person, and he was a great basketball player in his day at AC, and he had some success as the girls' coach. But regardless of how his boys coaching career pans out, it doesn't justify the way Johnny has been treated during his time as AC head coach. I don't know of many people in the AC area who think too kindly of Mrs. Hall. And as for the baseball program...I think we both know how each other feels on that issue! ;)

Some of you people on this site don't know Mark Martin very well. He will do an outstanding job with the AC boys. Give it a rest, wish them well and shut up.

Good luck to all of AC and M. Martin but I think it would be hard to argue that Coach J. Martin deserved better treatment. He should've been allowed to leave on his own terms. I think he has earned at least that much.

This is a shame! Sis Hall and Larry Maynard are destroying AC high school. She has done everything possible within her power for years now to fire Johnny. While at the same time she has broke her back to keep Mark Martin in a job he had to be fire from a couple years ago. Clearly Sis Hall has different standards and rules for different people. Johnny Martin was the dean of 15th region coaches, won 3 regional titles (1-15th region title & 2-All A regional titles), over 10 district titles, over 500 wins, and one of the most respected coaches in the state. Yet he was fired over the telephone after over 25 years of service! And after years of plotting, from Sis, on a way to get rid of him. Now that was a real classy move!!! While on the other hand she was doing everything within her power to first, keep Mark Martin in a teacher job, which has proven in the past to be hard to do, and next, put him in Johnny's job. For instance, Sis hired Mark back as coach after he had been fired by the board just a couple years earilier, without him even being a teacher at the school. Making him the first head coach (boys or girls) not to be a full time teacher in Floyd County history. Then, Sis hired him back as a teacher the following year, even though Mark failed to meet the conditions of his employment with the board before and HAD to be fired. I honestly believe Allen Central HS is the only place in the 15th region where this kind of personal attack on one individual (johnny), with the specific intent to help another individual (mark) has been made this obvious to everyone. Sis Hall and Larry Maynard are the problem at AC high school. Those are the two people who need to leave!!!!

Very sad to see Johnny go, or maybe shocked. Kind of like the feeling I had when Coach Webb left SF. Never good when a good exciting coach leaves/or is let go. For me this just makes the region less interesting. I believe there maybe more to this story than what is made public. I do not know this but its seems that with a resume like that of Coach Martin would have to be something other than basketball.
