Who thinks we should go ahead and start this thread, because i'm pumped, even tho i kno this is the worst chance Pburg has had in 4 years and this is the worst team either team has had in that period of time, it's still gonna be Pburg vs. Belfry, lol, so what do u guys think??

Wow....where to begin ?
This will be a battle once more. Even though the cats will be 1-5 and the Pirates will be 6-1. I dont see this as a blowout by any means. I think that P'Burg hosting this game gives them a little advantage to say in the least.I think the boys from Pond Creek will pull out the W. I am not going to post any score as of yet, I'll wait till Tues or Wed. to do that.

This game worries me alot...
Belfry is in a lose-lose situation.
If Belfry wins by a large ammount then everyone comments how down Pburg is and that it doesn't mean anything...if Belfry wins by a small margin then everyone still acknowledges that Pburg is down and that Belfry must be too in order to only win marginally.
If Belfry loses then the chances of a district title drastically decrease and all of a sudden Belfry is put in a situation where they need to beat Ironton (OH) to help win the district.
No offense to Pburg but the team in the driver seat is Sheldon Clark and they await next week on homecoming... Pburg has a few years of unfinished business left... they are a mystery and their inconsistency masks the VERY talented team that awaits beneath it... they are playing at Pburg which is a very tough place to win... for the first time all year Pburg has confidence on their side....
BCF4L
10-01-2005, 04:38 PM
Good observation O. But I don't see where beating Ironton helps anything. Ironton isn't in the district so it doesn't count as far as district standings go.
BCF4L
10-01-2005, 04:41 PM
Nevermind I see where you're getting that from now. Cuz if Prestonsburg beats Belfry then that puts Belfry's record exactly the same as Sheldon Clarks. But if you guys beat Sheldon Clark which is likely, you don't have to worry about beating Ironton.
MR.INCREDIBLE
10-01-2005, 04:53 PM
whether or not these 2 teams are up or down....it doesnt matter when they face each other, it will be war and yes right now i give pburg a slight advantage because you just dont go into pburg and expect to come out with a win. wewill have to play better than we have played all season to win...i just hope haywood has his boys ready and not takin the blackcats lightly because of thier record. im not sure what a win against ironton will do to help win the district other than building confidence...but by then it will be too late if im not mistaken the only district game after ironton is shelby valley and...well no offense to them, im not near as worried about them as i am prestonsburg. either way just hope BOTH teams play an injury free game and put on a **** of a show for us that will be there!! Belfry needs to be really focused for the next two weeks. First of all a W at P'burg will be vital for the Pirates district title hopes, and if they do win the game, they have to be careful of a let down against the Cards the following week. Sheldon Clarks win over P'burg has all but secured them the #2 seed in the district.

This game scares me to death....... This year is no different because when it comes to Belfry/P'Burg you can throw all the records out the window. It dont matter that Belfry is 5-1 and P'burg is 1-5...its going to be a war.
I have alot of respect for the Prestonsburg program and so does Coach Haywood. We need to come out focused and intense. We need to keep the Cat fans and the refs out of the game with solid smashmouth football. Ball control will be the key against the Cats.We just need to limit our mistakes and keep the ball out of their hands.
If Belfry can do all that, I feel good about our chances.
Go Pirates !!!!

I can't wait until next Friday, no matter the records, it's going to be a great game. P-burg's confidence has raised a little bit and I'm sure they will be ready for this game, as they always are. The offense they're running now suits there team much better, but I haven't seen anything on Belfry, except for a couple of highlights from SO and that I know they thumped a good Pikeville team. Never the less, I like P-burg's chances in this one.

No matter who the oponent,,, Belfry has equalizer that will doom them in no matter who they play and that is fumbles. If we turn the ball over like the Lawrence County game I honestly think we lose this game.
These next three weeks will let us Belfry fans know where this team is.... right now I think we are all on cloud 9 watching these young men mature and become a top tier 2A football team... but it will be so easy for us to be clamoring how we have no shot at a regional title if we struggle through these next 3 weeks.
Pburg- this game will teach us alot... how our team handles a team that is very talented that they are supposed to beat (think about a 2nd round playoff matchup type of team)
Sheldon Clark- should be for district title, this will teach us how our team will respond against a solid team in a big game setting with alot of pressure,, SC should be 6-2 coming in and prolly ranked in the top 10 in the state. This will show if we are ready for a regional final game.
Ironton- How will this young team respond against a physical, powerhouse type of team. We will be the underdog,,,much like we will be in the state semi finals if we make it that far.
We look impressive the next few weeks and all of a sudden you'll see the Pond Creek nation out in full force the rest of the year ala 2003 and 2004.

We should have a tent, table, or something showing App Wireless' name. I'm the tall one that will be working there. Just look me up and we will talk. You can also sign up at our table for a chance to win a 50 dollar check while you are there. We have given away 50 dollars at every game we have attended this year, and donated 100 dollars to both teams. But just look me up.

How does Ironton figure into the District equation ??? If a team loses all their noindistrict games and wins all the district games, they are the dist. champ. There is no way Ironton can keep us from winning the dist. title. We have beaten Ironton once out of 11 times, did the losses prevent us from winning district ? No

Not exactly, a loss in your out of district schedule doesn't hurt you, it just doesn't help you any, and it only matters in a 3 way tie situation.
If there is a 2 way tie, then the winner of the head to head matchup gets the district title.
In the 3 way tie, if either of the 3 teams has beaten the other two, then that team wins the title. If all three teams have beaten each other (SC beats Pburg, Belfry beats SC and Pburg beats Belfry) then it comes down to non-district wins.
In that case, you get one point for every win by any non district opponent that you have beaten. And the team with the most points is district champ.
For instance, if Belfry beats Pikeville and Lawrence Co, and loses to Henry Clay and Ironton. And Pikeville has 7 wins and LC has 3, then Belfry would get 10 points.
Pburg didn't win any non-district games and so they would get 0 points
If SC beat Fairland and Knott Co, they would get points for each win that Fairland and Knott has. Say Fairland won 7 and Knott won 4 games, then SC would have 11 points and would win the district.
Second and third place would then be decided by the head to head battle between Belfry and Pburg. In this case, Pburg would be 2nd and Belfry would be 3rd.
Of course that is all hypothetical, but that is how it works.

What he said... lol
Lets do some hypothetical thinking:
Say Belfry loses to Pburg by 2 points.... then Belfry beats Sheldon Clark by 2.
All three teams then run the table in the district and Pburg finishes 5-5, SC finishes 7-3 overall, and Belfry finishes 7-3 with a loss to Ironton also.
Now we have three teams with one loss in district play who has defeated each other by 2 points in every case.... at this point would the tiebreaker involving out of district opposition come into play? If so... and say Belfry non-district wins (Pikeville and LC) win less games than the SC non-dstirct winners? Then SC wins the district title although the lost to Belfry?
Same situation except Belfry beats Ironton,,,then the Pirates are crowned the district champs with their 8-2 record and a ton of non-dstrict tiebreaker points?
Does the margin of victory even matter in this? Could Pburg beat Belfry by 3, then Belfry only beat SC by 1, and the Blackcats suddenly be the champs? Or could Belfry lose by 7,,, then turnaround and beat SC by 14 and be the district champs just from that?
As I mentioned earlier...I REALLY hope the Ironton game doesn't put all of our major playoff hopes on the line.

10-04-2005, 02:41 PM
I dont think it matters how many points you beat someone....its who you win/lose to....i hope i read that correctly?
Red and Black
10-04-2005, 02:54 PM
Does the quality of the non-district games come into play, like say, in 1A if there is a 3-way tie for first, paintsville has played alot of weak opposition and pikeville has played a really tough non-district schedule, but Paintsville has more non-district wins than Pikeville has, who would be the champ of this, if Hazard were in a 3-way tie with Pikeville and Paintsville
I'm so confused by the way, lol

Overall record doesn't play into it, just district record.
Margin of victory has nothing to do with it either.
If all 3 teams tie with identical records, and they each have beaten each other, then the tie breaker comes into play.
The only thing that matters then is how many point you get for your non district wins. See Beef's explanation in the thread he linked to above. He nailed it.

So the tiebreaker points stay the same no matter how strong or weak each non-district opponent is?
Sort of...
If you beat Jenkins, you're not going to get many points, because they aren't going to have many wins. But if you beat Pikeville, you will get several points because Pikeville will have several wins.
If it comes down to it, the Ironton game for Belfry will be huge because the Tigers will have several wins. Likewise, Sheldon Clark would be cheering for Fairland Oh the rest of the season so they could rack up more points.

I guess it's because Belfry & P'Burg seem to match up welland have almost identical records. This year it's lost some if the spark because on paper it's a mismatch. Belfry is 5-1. Prestonsburg is 1-5....thats a big difference. I still believe the game will be closer than some think. And for the third time I have said this....This game scares me alot.

i haven't been able to watch Belfry play this year. how did they adjust to the loss of two of the best runningbacks in the state in jones and howard? also what happened to howard? i heard he went to Pikeville College but after watching play in last years state game i figured he should have went somewhere bigger.

We have adjusted quite well. We have Dustin May, Matt Maynard & Corey Chapman in the backfield. Our entire offensive and defensive lines are back from last year. Our secondary is a little young but coming along real good now.
Doug Howard went to Pikeville College and David Jones went to Kentucky.

I'm surprised this thread hasn't gotten more heated as well. With this being a rivalry game the score will almost always be much closer than the talent displayed on the field. Good Luck to both teams.

I think Prestonsburg's schedule so far this year will help them out. Every team that P-burg has been beaten by this year has a winning record. Whether it be single A or double A teams. This will help them out. Prestonsburg has developed the past two weeks and you can see a big difference in them from the beginning of the year. I think P-burg will be up for the challenge tonight. I really don't think Belfry can hang with them. Belfry will be a thing in the past after tonight cuz P-burg is going to lay a thumping on Belfry.

Yeah, beating up on poor Magoffin by 60+ points is a real confidence booster...;)
We will be a thing of the past ? :moon:
Lay a thumping on Belfry ?
Gee, I wonder if the Blackcats will be able to backup all the smacktalk ??? We shall see I suppose.
The Refs for the game are P'Burg graduates I've heard...Class of 1980..:BigLaugh:

why does Belfry's fullback get more carries than the halfbacks?
football05
10-07-2005, 07:26 AM
well I would guess most of the time the Linebackers are looking for the sweep or something from the halfback and coach haywood loves to run BELLY DIVE with his FB's. If i was a betting man thats what I would bet on johnsmith......he us just runs a hardnose running football team and is really good at it....i guess you can say it catches the other team off guard a little bit, then when they expect the FB dive again he runs a sweep play or option and goes for 6.......

why does Belfry's fullback get more carries than the halfbacks?
The belly series and triple option feeds off establishing the fullback. Next time you watch them play, watch the linebackers and tackles on the defense when Belfry has the ball. Everytime that fullback takes the handoff up the middle, the LB and T have to respect it or he will run it right up the middle for big gains.
Then when they fake the fullback and run the option, or give it to the 2nd back on the belly outside of the tackle and it goes for a big big gain, you can be thankful that the fullback has been doing his job all night.
I'd rather watch a more balanced offense that throws the ball some, but you can't argue with the succes Coach Haywood has had over there. And if you understand it, his offense can be a lot of fun to watch.
football05
10-07-2005, 07:38 AM
well put BAT....mine was similar but yours was pretty much spelled out..and most of the time the big big gain will put you 6 on the score board if the other team is poor at tackling......

Now that it's gameday:
Prediction: Belfry 28
PBurg 7
Analysis: The only thing that will cause Belfry to lose is Belfry. The Pirates have an advantage in talent, advantage in team speed, advantage in consistency, advantage in the trenches, and have proven themselves through the course of the year. The Blackcat defense has been torched a few times and their offense has struggled as well. Shafer has struggled in his career vs. Belfry and expect the same to happen again. The Blackcats will hang tough but too much Belfry advantages to overcome.
