Short runs help Male beat Butler, 13-10
August 27, 2011Louisville Male High School

In recent years, Male’s football teams have been known for their blazing speed and long touchdown runs. All of that changed Friday night when the Bulldogs used a bunch of short runs and ball control to beat visiting Butler 13-10.
“We’re a rushing team, and we wanted to control the ball,” Male quarterback Aladin Ganibegovic said after throwing for one touchdown and running for another asthe Bulldogs improved their record to 1-1 after a 28-21 loss to Floyd Central of Indiana last week.
Neither team scored in the second half, but Male dominated the play, running 35 plays to Butler’s 12. Only two of Male’s second-half plays were passes as the Bulldogs of coach Chris Wolfe racked up 14 first downs to zero for Butler. The game ended after a three-yard run by Ganibegovic to the Butler 1.
“We’re not big up front, so we can’t dominate people,” Wolfe said. “We have 10 new starters on offense and this was only our quarterback’s second start. We drove the ball with an offensive line that’s not powerful or big. Down the road, we know we’ll meet teams much bigger up front.”
Butler coach Scott Carmony praised Male’s ball-control game plan.
“That’s good football,” he said. “They grinded it out. We wanted to bobble up No. 26 (Ronjae Morris. Male’s fastest back), and we did. But offensively we couldn’t get in a rhythm.”
Morris ran the ball only twice in the first half but finished with 81 yards on 13 carries.
Butler (0-1) took a 3-0 lead on Aaron Miles’ 33-yard field goal with 8:26 left in the first quarter.
Male scored on its second possession, driving 49 yards in nine plays and scoring on a 20-yard pass from Ganibegovic to Kainin Lewis with 13.7 seconds left in the first period. Tyler Erny’s kick made it 7-3.
It looked like Ganibegovic jumped to get off the pass, but he said, “I’m not real tall (the junior is 5 feet 11). I might have been on my tiptoes.”
Butler regained the lead when Brenton Caldwell ran 32 yards to the Male 3, from where he scored on the next play with 7:23 left in the first half. Caldwell gained 81 yards on 12 carries, all in the first half.
“The doctor pulled him out of the game because of something to do with his neck,” Carmony said. “He didn’t play in the second half.”
Male countered with a 10-play, 54-yard drive, capped by Ganibegovic’s 9-yard keeper around right end with 2:38 remaining in the first half.
Male appeared headed for a TD on its first possession of the third quarter, driving 65 yards in 10 plays to the Butler 1. Ganibegovic, who gained 116 yards on 14 carries, ran 19 yards to the 1.
But they stopped there. CJ Calhoun fumbled on the next play, and Bears linebacker Alonzo Brock recovered the ball and ran for an apparent score. However, Butler was called for an illegal-block-in-the-back penalty.
“We had two illegal blocks in the back on the play,” Carmony said.
“First-game mistakes. We’re going to be all right. This was not a season-maker or breaker.”
