The 2011-12 Franklin-Simpson Swim Team concluded its season with two record-setting performances by the relay team of Tanner Smith, Connor Smith, Kaycie Bowen and Sarah Moody at the Region 1 Swimming and Diving Meet Friday and Saturday at the Healthpark in Owensboro.

The relay team waited until the last two events of the season to set new team records.

“The 200 free relay record was 2 years old and needed to be broken,” Franklin-Simpson swim coach Mike Ballard.

Each of the four participants swims 50 yards of the pool during a relay. Bowen broke 26 seconds in her freestyle portion. The relayers met a team goal by finishing 10th overall in the 200 at the regional. They missed qualifying for the state meet in the event by just three seconds.

F-S also came in 11th at the regional in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a program record-setting time.

With just four girls on the entire team, the Lady Wildcats managed to finish 16th among the 30 teams that competed in the Region 1 meet.

“When you look at the results of the meet, FSHS is the fastest relay team in the meet without a pool and the fastest team consisting of High School swimmers only,” Ballard said.

All the teams in the region meet have at least one pool in their own county and year round swimmers on their relay teams, according to Ballard.

No F-S swimmer qualified for the 2012 Pannell Swim Shop/KHSAA State Swimming & Diving Meet Feb. 23-25 at the Ralph Wright Natatorium in Louisville.

Defending champ Bowling Green again claimed the boys and girls Region 1 swim titles with 292 and 362 points, respectively, and won the overall championship with a combined 654 points. Daviess County (272) and Owensboro Catholic (257) came in second and third.

With just two boys competing and no one entered in the dive events, F-S placed 22nd overall.

In individual races, Tanner Smith – the only senior on the Lady Wildcat swim team – logged a 16th-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle. Bowen, a freshman, qualified in the top 10 in the 100-yard butterfly but was disqualified in the finals due to an unfortunate separation of her kick. Her time in the 100-yard freestyle was good enough for a top 18 finish, but she chose not to swim in the finals to give her team a chance to break the records.

“Kaycie (Bowen) didn’t have the individual races she wanted, but I give her all the credit in the world for giving it up for the team,” Ballard said.

Ballard said sophomore Connor Smith continued to improve even though she didn’t qualify individually for the second day of competition. Another sophomore, Sarah Moody, waited until the very last two relays to swim her fastest swims of the year. Moody participated in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events.

Miles Ferrell and Chase Gregory represented F-S in some of the boys’ events. Ferrell had his best two races of the season at the Daviess County dual meet a week prior to the region meet. However, the senior had a setback going into the region meet for the second straight year and didn’t qualify for the second day.

Tanner Smith and Ferrell competed for four and six years, respectively, on the F-S swim team.

“Ferrell will go down as the most accomplished high school boy swimmer from Franklin since Steve Crocker in the early 1980s,” Ballard said. “Steve went on to swim at Western Kentucky University and still holds the school record in the 50 freestyle. Steve also finished third in the 50 freestyle in the U.S. Olympic Trials.”

“Miles has a chance to go on to college and swim, but he has to want it,” Ballard said. “(Tanner) Smith also has a chance to compete at the college level and has been contacted by a couple of colleges.

F-S will also lose Gregory, who is transferring to Allen County-Scottsville for the next school year.
