PIKEVILLE, Ky. â The University of Pikeville ended a six-game losing streak against the U.Va.-Wise with a 38-20 win on Saturday night at the W.C. Hambley Athletics Complex.
UPIKE (3-1, 1-0 in the Mid-South Conference East Division) hadn't beat their closest geographic rival since a 31-20 win during the 2005 season. They forced six U.Va.-Wise turnovers and, after giving up 22 fourth-quarter points in a loss last Saturday, outscored their guests 14-0 in the final period tonight.
U.Va.-Wise (1-3, 0-1) lost their third straight game.
Pikeville got two scoring runs and a fumble recovery from senior tailback Zeke White, while senior quarterback Trevor Hoskins was 15-of-24 for 276 yards with two scores and a pick.
The first touchdown of the game was set up when White fell on a fumble at the Wise 10, and on the first play of the drive freshman Chris Perry went off tackle for the score. Sophomore Grayson Qu 2:16 left to kick booted the PAT with 11 minutes to play in the opening frame.
Senior Trevor Hoskins hit junior Jordan Amis from 20 yards out to make it 14-0 with 6:23 to play in the first.
The Cavaliers got on the scoreboard with 12:13 to play in the half when freshman Conner Swift finished a seven-play, 30-yard drive from four yards out. Junior Paul Melshen's PAT cut the lead to 14-7.
Pikeville put 10 points on the scoreboard to finish the half. White ended a seven-play, 73-yard drive with a four-yard run with 6:09 to play, and Quick nailed a 25-yard field goal with 2:16 left to make it 24-7 at the break.
Wise dominated the third period to make a game of it. Senior Ryan Bouldin hauled in a 54-yard pass from backup quarterback Culen LaVoi, and then when junior Kevin Whitmer scored on a one-yard run with 4:14 left in the third, a missed PAT kept the Bears on top 24-20.
After the teams traded turnovers, Pikeville settled down and used an eight-play, 74-yard drive to move back to a double-digit lead. It ended when White scored from the two with 9:10 left.
Hoskins then hit Shawntez Johnson on a 51-yard touchdown pass with 3:09 to play to end it.
For Johnson, it was the fifth straight game during which he has caught a touchdown pass. Next week at Cumberlands, he will try to tie the school record of six straight games with a scoring catch.
Junior Hunter Adams led the Bears with 45 yards on 11 carries. The team finished with 103 yards but averaged on 2.6 yards per carry.
Hoskins hit six different receivers, with four getting at least three receptions. Sophomore Tanner Napier caught four passes for 76 yards. Amis (87 yards), Johnson (82) and junior Brent Slusher (18) caught three passes apiece.
Swift led all rushers with 66 yards on 16 carries, accounting for all but 10 of Wise's rushing yards. LaVoi was 14-of-32 for 181 with a score and three interceptions after relieving sophomore Tye Marshall, who was 4-of-5 for 20 yards before leaving with an injury.
Junior Michel Steele had six catches for 67 yards, while Bouldin had six for 65.
Freshman lineman Desmond Davis had seven tackles, six of them solos, to lead the Bear defensive effort. Sophomore John Dudley Hilton had six solos, a sack, two tackles for loss, a forced fumble and an interception in the win.
Wise was led defensively by senior linebacker Derek Comer, who had six tackles and a fumble recovery, while junior Shahiem Harris had six tackles as well.
Pikeville and the University of the Cumberlands, the only 1-0 teams in the East, will meet next Saturday at 1:30 in Williamsburg for the early division lead, while Wise hosts Cumberland University at 6 p.m. in a crossover contest.
