(18) The Cumberlands 68 Cumberland (TN) 56

Lebanon, TN – The 18th-ranked University of the Cumberlands men's basketball team held Cumberland to 19 first half points, while shooting 56% from the field in the second half to help the Patriots to a 68-56 win Thursday night at Dallas Floyd Recreation Center. With the win the Patriots improve to 15-3 overall and 3-1 in conference play, while the Phoenix move to 8-10 overall and 1-3 against the MSC.

Cumberland jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, before Eric Duncan's three-pointer put UC ahead 3-2, a lead which they kept the rest of the half. Malik Colvin-Seldon and Kaashif English each tallied three points in the next three minutes to extend Cumberlands lead to 9-4 four minutes into the game. A couple minutes later Will Gary drained a jumper to give the Patriots a 13-8 advantage midway through the first half. The Phoenix hit a free throw, before English converted his second three of the game to extend the lead to seven points. Cumberland outscored the Patriots 10-5 over the next six minutes to cut the lead to 21-19 with 2:19 remaining. English made a pair of free throws, while Duncan hit a ten foot jumper to give the Patriots a 25-19 edge heading into the break.

The Phoenix used a 9-3 run to start the second half to tie the game 28-28 with 14:33 remaining. On the ensuing Patriot possession Chance Morton found Anthony Eaves for the three-pointer to put UC back in front. The two teams traded buckets before Eaves drained another long ball. English and Eaves, twice, hit from behind-the-arc, to extend the lead to 45-34 midway through the second half. The two teams traded buckets over the course of the next four minutes, until a Gary and Travon Labranche hit back-to-back buckets to put Cumberlands ahead 62-47 with 4:25 left. Rhyan Townes hit a three-pointer for the Phoenix, before Gary responded with a triple of his own to push UC's lead to 16 points with 2:55 remaining. The Phoenix scored six straight points, before Eaves converted a pair of free throws to give the Patriots a 68-56 win.

Leading the way for the Patriots was Eaves, who tallied a team-high 19 points, all of which came in the second half. Eaves made five of his six shots from long range. English netted 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the season. Gary chipped in 13 points and four rebounds in the win.

The Patriots return to the court Saturday, January 20, when they host second-ranked Lindsey Wilson. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. and live video is available here, while live stats are available here.
