Teens Turn to Hand Sanitizer to Get Drunk
#1
Six teenagers have ended up in San Fernando Valley emergency rooms recently with symptoms of alcohol poisoning. But the illicit alcohol didn't come from their parents' liquor cabinets or from illegally purchased beers. These teens got drunk -- and dangerously ill -- drinking hand sanitizer.

They're not drinking the gel straight from the dispenser. Some of the teens reportedly used salt to isolate the ethyl alcohol in the disinfectant, turning the gel into a shot of something like liquor; others go online to find distillation instructions. Since most hand sanitizers are 62 percent to 65 percent ethyl alcohol, the drink distilled from it can be as high as 120 proof. (In contrast, a standard shot of vodka is about 40 percent alcohol, or 80 proof.)

"All it takes is just a few swallows and you have a drunk teenager," Cyrus Rangan, director of the toxicology bureau for the county public health department and a medical toxicology consultant for Children's Hospital Los Angeles, told the Los Angeles Times. "There is no question that it is dangerous."

Yuck! It is scary to think that people would do this to themselves.

Where does one even come up with that idea?

Exactly.
Whos the genius thats setting round with friends and says...."i cant get anybody to buy us beer......hey.....what about that hand sanitizer?" LOL

If Obama and the democrats didn't mess the economy up these teenagers could have a part time job and pay someone to buy them safe beer.

lol.....For them to have a part time job it would mean that it would require them to actually perform real work and that is just not going to happen. This has got to be the sorriest generation to date. They do not want to work, dont know how to work, and have no intention of going to work. I thought that the current generation of 18-25 year olds was about the sorriest generation I have ever witnessed, but this current group of up and comers are pathetic. Every generation just gets worse and worse and worse.

^It's what they are taught Bob. They see mom or dad sitting atthe house living on the draw and they figure they may as well do the same.

Sad, but very true.

You are exactly right. I get so mad every time I hear these unemployment figures when they come out that I could chew nails. They are high because nobody wants to work. For one thing they dont have to. You couldn't get these bunch of early 20 somethings to work in a pie factory. First thing you hear after you hire one of them are things things like, "you want me to do what?" , "I need friday off" , " I dont want to work saturdays" , "when do I get a raise" "when is my vacation?", "screwdriver? what's a screwdriver?" , "Well I didn't know I would have to do that"............. And when they dont show up for work , they tell you they were sick. Well why didn't you call and tell someone you ask?......you get this classic...."I didn't know your number". I have never seen a more worthless generation of kids, when it comes to doing a job. But as one their own and the one who has all the answers on here, Wildcat23 will tell you, "it's all Bush's fault!!"....lol

I 100% agree with you. These generations are lazy. They don't want to work. Thank you so much for giving us the real reason for a high unemployment rate!

Hey Im just happy to finally read these words. Its no presidents fault when teenagers and lazy parents just want to draw a check. And this area is so bad for it.

So this is what they're learning in high school chemistry these days

I heard this morning that parents/schools are urged to buy only the foam sanitizer.

For a froathy buzz?

Why does this surprise anyone? Teens have been trying to get a buzz .....well since they've been teens.
From sniffing glue/paint and other aerosol products, drinking mouth wash, cough medicine, Windex, or any other alcohol based products.
Hand sanitizers is the next thing.
Where are the parents? They should be setting the examples and explaining how dangerous this type of behavior is. Be involved, be a parent not a friend.

More than likely stoned out of their minds too.

My college room mate used to drink vanilla extract.
That's the first time I learned the difference between vanilla flavoring and extract.
She used to stay high from it.

Oh really? Yeah it's not the fault of those presidents that want to extend, extend, extend, extend, extend unemployment benefits to those that are wasted out of their minds and have no intentions of ever finding a job? Who would want to go to work when you can make more by sitting at home?

OK lets see, you are now able to get an unemployment check, food stamps, subsidized housing, subsidized utilities, a free medical card, and a FREE CELL PHONE. What's next free subsidies to help pay for new tatoos and ear rings so they can feel good about themselves? But that is not a president's fault for trying to block legislation to get it under control. Right?....lol

We have named eveything in this area for (Democrat,of couse) Carl D. Perkins from Ashland all the way to Whitesburg. Nobody is more responsible for destroying the work ethic of eastern Kentucky than he has been. Entitlements have now all become a Rite of Passage. When you see the 60 Minutes type documentaries of eastern Kentucky WC, the stereotypes all come well earned.

If the government is going to hand out money at least make em do something more than just sit on the couch puffing on a reefer, and drinking a cold Bud, to get it.

Wow!! Did you ever say a mouthful....I know it's wrong to "generalize" any situation; however, I get really frustrated with the certain situations from time to time. For example, I have worked and/or gone to school since age 10. That's fifty years worth!!! I have learned that prisoners (at least those held locally) have better health care than I can afford to have through my work place. Dunno......just doesn't seem fair. I have posted (AND been chastised) on previous threads that I would have a more lucrative life if my husband and I divorced, renounced our American citizenship, moved to Mexico and swam back illegally....ESPECIALLY if we chose California as a home...then lived together.
Something is encouraging this kind of crap.

But we certainly cant blame our lawmakers for it, can we Granny?

^^
Not entirely.

The lawmakers couldn't do these kinds of things were they not in a position to do so. I've learned that I can't change the world, so I try to make better the little place in the world in which I live. I agree with helping those folks in need....I really do. But that logic has gotten so out of hand, it's not recognizeable anymore.

I am all about helping out...say a single parent with bills, healthcare, child care, etc. I know how difficult it has been for my daughter, for example, and she has always worked at least two jobs. She has never received any kind of government aid, and I'm thankful for that.
What really stabs me are the people taking advantage of the "system". AND the fact that the "system" has become so spoiled and tainted. Responsibility isn't accepted very much anymore, it's shoved from one place to another while the real person who is responsible escapes through the "good ole boy" politicians of the time.
Currently John Edwards can testify to this; he's testifying elsewhere right now.

But back to responsibility.....I think everyone should step up and take their share, AND you get that share everytime that you pull the voting ballot.

But I think as long as we keep putting these types in office that is what we are going to get. When you have over half the country on one entitlement program or another it's not realistic to think that they are not going to vote for the one's that are giving the "freebies" away. They are not going to cut their own throats. Just look at the one's on this site that voted for that socialist in the White House once and will now turn around and do it again. America just doesn't have a conscience any more.

On the rest of your post I think we're both operating on the same wave length. Government Assistance was meant to help those who need help, not those who wont help themselves.

So they went from Vodka soaked tampoons up the ***, to drinking hand sanitizer. WOW.
