Covington Catholic golf coach Rob Schneeman used a Cincinnati Reds baseball analogy to help get his team in the frame of mind he thought it would need to turn a third straight conference tournament loss to Ryle into a third straight Region 7 championship.
It worked as CovCath rallied from a few shots down after nine holes to beat Ryle 309-312 on Tuesday on the Brookview/Lakeview courses at Boone Links.
âWe knew it was going to be a grind,â said Schneeman. âI was talking to them about (Reds first baseman) Joey Votto and how he focuses on every swing and about them doing the same thing, because it can get away from them quick. We talked about taking a six rather than seven. Thatâs where tournaments are won or lost. At times weâve had trouble with that. I told them it was going to come down to a couple of strokes and thatâs what it came down to.â
It marked the third straight year that CovCath avenged a loss to Ryle in the Northern Kentucky Athletic Conference Division I tournament to win the Region 7 title. Itâs also the 37th regional golf title for CovCath since 1964.
Both teams advance to the state tournament, which will be held Oct. 5-6 at Bowling Green Country Club. Itâs the 11th straight year both schools have advanced to the state tournament.
Dixie Heights senior Blake Adkins, who fired a 2-over par 74, was individual medalist and one of three players not on the qualifying teams to earn an individual berth in the state tournament along with Walton-Veronaâs Jacob Poore, who fired a 79, and Cooperâs Zach McNeill, who carded an 80.
Ryle was just 2-over as a team after nine holes, but went 19-over over the final nine holes. Perhaps the biggest heartbreak for the Raiders came when Austin Squires, who fired a 2-under 34 on his first nine holes, shot a 48 on the second nine, including an 11 on the par-4 17th hole when he hit two balls out of bounds and another into a lateral hazard.
CovCath also showcased its depth as its No. 4 player, junior Brett Bauereis, fired a 75, which tied for second, and its No. 5 player, sophomore Paul Huber, shot a 77, which was good for sixth. The Colonels also got a 75 from senior Austin Beck, who plays No. 1, and an 82 from senior Alex Scanlon, who plays No. 2.
