Houston 73 (7) Wichita State 59
#1
HOUSTON - University of Houston senior guard Rob Gray posted game highs with 24 points and four assists, and the Cougars used a solid defensive effort throughout the game to stun No. 7 Wichita State on Saturday afternoon inside H&PE Arena in a game presented by Maintenance Supply Headquarters.

Gray, who entered the game as the American Athletic Conference's leading scorer, added to his average after connecting on 10-of-21 shots from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers. The Forest City, N.C., native recorded his 10th 20-point game of the season and the 35th of his career.

Meanwhile, the Houston defense was steady from the opening tip. Although they were outrebounded for only the third time this season, the Cougars limited the Shockers to a season-low 32.8 shooting percentage (19-of-58) from the field and did not allow Wichita State to reach double-digits until nearly 13 minutes had passed in the first half.

The Cougars also forced 18 Wichita State turnovers, the most for the Shockers in American Athletic Conference play this season.

With the win, the Cougars improved to 15-4 overall and 5-2 in American play. Houston also knocked off its highest ranked opponent since taking a 69-67 victory over No. 3 Memphis on Jan. 6, 1996, inside Hofheinz Pavilion.

Wichita State fell to 15-4 overall and 5-2 in American play.

Wichita State grabbed the early lead with a free throw from center Shaquille Morris, but the Cougars used an 8-0 run with baskets from Gray, junior guard Corey Davis Jr. and junior forward Breaon Brady over the next 3:18 to grab a lead they would never relinquish.

The Shockers used rallies throughout the game to move close, but the Cougars had an answer each time. After the Cougars took a 35-26 lead into the locker room at the break, Wichita State eventually used an 8-0 run to move to within 42-36 following a dunk from Rashard Kelly.

However, Houston used a free throw from senior forward Nura Zanna and a pair of baskets from Gray to push the lead back to double digits. That would be as close as the Shockers would come for the rest of the game.

Corey Davis Jr. finished with 17 points, thanks to 6-of-6 shooting from the charity stripe, and a team-high eight rebounds and drained a 3-pointer in his 15th consecutive game while dishing out three assists with a pair of steals. Senior forward Devin Davis (no relation) added 12 points with seven boards.

Morris led the Shockers with 12 points and was the only WSU player to reach double-digit points, while Kelly grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
