Georgetown College football's defense proved once again its top in the country giving up seven points Saturday against Point University. This seemed like a game that Georgetown would run away with in the first quarter offensively, but Point finally got settled in on defense and made some huge stops throughout the game to hold GC to just more than three touchdowns. The No. 16 Tigers (2-0) used a touchdown and two safeties to seal the game in the fourth, 25-7.
The stingy defense held the Skyhawks to 156 total yards and scored the final four points. Late in the fourth quarter, Point quarterback Derek Bellard took a bad snap and kicked it out of the back of the end zone as several Tigers gave chase. Then the visitor's final drive, Bellard was sacked by Dustin Haraway in the end zone.
"Our defense did an outstanding job today," said Georgetown coach Bill Cronin. "I don't know if I've been involved in a game where we had two safeties. It was an awesome effort."
In the first quarter, the Tiger's offense was dominating. The team drove the field on its first series led by Ross Cox who had a five-yard and a 55-yard reception on back-to-back plays to put the Tigers in business at the Point four-yard line. The next play, Daric Pugh carried it in the first of his two touchdowns.
Georgetown's ensuing drive started near midfield, and the Tigers marched their way down the field on a seven-play, 53-yard drive and 14-0 game with 8:36 left in the opening quarter. It looked like the Tigers were going to breeze by PU, but the Skyhawks had different plans. The defense finally settled and were holding the Tigers to quick, scoreless drives.
"It was a little too easy at first, and they get it in their mind that it's going to be easy all day long," Cronin said. "We got a little bit away from our game plan. It wasn't so much the plays we ran as the execution of those plays.
"Point brought a nice team in here. They played pretty well. They defended us pretty well. They made some adjustments on the run that were impressive and kept us thinking on the sideline. But the bottom line is we've just got to execute better on offense."
Neither team scored in the second quarter, giving momentum to Point after trailing by two touchdowns just more than seven minutes into action.
It was a slow start for both teams in the second half, but the Skyhawks broke through when Bellard completed a 39-yard pass to Charles Ducksworth to make the game 14-7 with just more than four minutes to go in the third quarter. The Tigers eventually answered the score as Riley Hall completed a 16-yard pass to Cox in the corner of the end zone for Cox's first touchdown of the year.
The defense capped off their tremendous day by getting those safeties, putting the game out of reach. The Tiger's offense was led by Hall who was 25-for-47 with 298 passing yards and a touchdown. Pugh, Kyle Longworth and Cox also had great days accounting for 249 yards and all three touchdowns. Pugh rushed 17 times for 73 yards. Cox had four catches for 89 yards. Longworth was Hall's top target with seven receptions for 78 yards. He added four carries for nine more yards.
The Skyhawk offense was led by Charles Ducksworth who had three receptions for 134 yards including his 39-yard scoring reception and 72-yard bomb that set up a first and goal. GC's defense flexed its muscle though and held the visitors scoreless.
The Tigers will make a six and a half hour trip to Bluefield College next weekend, a team in which they have never lost to as GC looks to stay undefeated. Kickoff is set for 1:30 pm in Bluefield, W. Va.
