[Granny Bear]

I was in Monterey Bay once and heard stories about an earthquake that happened decades ago that caused a deep trench just off shore. This trench suddenly opening, apparently drained several thousand square miles of ocean water, and made the California coast line what it is today. I never researched this story, but heard it a couple times while we were whale watching.
In any event, this is certainly a seismicly active area.
