Default Former Navy SEAL involved in OBL raid writes book, has identity revealed
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012...legal-trouble/

Quote:
The author of a recently announced insider account of the raid that killed Usama bin Laden has been identified to Fox News as a 36-year-old former Navy SEAL Team 6 member from Alaska who also played a role in the high-profile rescue of an American captain kidnapped by Somali pirates.
The book, "No Easy Day: The Firsthand Account of the Mission That Killed Osama Bin Laden," is set to hit shelves on Sept 11. It is penned under the pseudonym "Mark Owen," according to the publisher, but multiple sources told Fox News his name is in fact Matt Bissonnette, 36, of Wrangell, Alaska. Bissonnette could be exposing himself to legal trouble, as the Pentagon has not vetted the account.
Of all media, Fox News revealed this guy's name. Im pretty surprised, and disappointed to be honest. What do you all think of this guy writing a book about this raid and not getting it vetted by the DOD and CIA first, and about him writing the book in the first place? Also, what do you think of Fox News revealing not only his identity, but where he's from as well?

Like I said, given Fox News' support of the military, I'm very surprised they did this. It puts himself and his family/friends in danger of revenge attacks from those sympathetic to Osama Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda. Although I highly doubt AQ's ability to hurt anyone close to this SEAL, and especially the guy himself considering he spent the last 10 years putting holes in the bodies of many a bad guy, still, it's a threat. There is a reason he wrote the book under a pseudonym.

But, my feelings are mixed about the guy as well. There's also a reason they're called "Quiet Proffesionals". Honor and loyalty are HUGE in the military, but especially in the special operations community. It's the basis of everything. Quite a few have already called him a traitor...I don't go that far, but he did pretty much spit in the face of all his buddies that were on that mission. Not to mention all the tactics, techniques and procedures that will undoubtably be in this book just to be able to explain the mission, even with him trying to not reveal classified info. Thanks to the Obama administration for ridiculously announcing so much info that DID NOT need to be released about the mission...including which units were involved in the mission (U.S. Army's 160th Special Operations Aviation regiment, more commonly known as the 160th SOAR, U.S. Navy DEVGRU, or "SEAL Team 6", and the CIA), where we went, how we got there, how we executed the mission, ect. Also, I don't like the fact that the guy turned his back on his buddies by writing a book and now, getting a movie deal about the mission. It's just not needed and something you don't do.

I have to say though, unless the book is shut down by the DOD and CIA (unlikely) or even if quite a bit is redacted and blacked out (more likely), I'll still be buying it. Now, if all this info about the operation wasn't already out there, I probably wouldn't buy it, just out of protest of the guy selling out for some money.

I don't buy this guy's excuse that he just wants to tell "the real story" because the real story is already out there, and doesn't even need to be in the first place! The Obama Adminstration pretty much handed a shitload of operational info about one of the most secretive and deadly units in the world, DEVGRU, to the enemy, and more importantly to the targets these guys go after, High Value Targets like OBL. They now know quite a bit how they will will be hit when we do decide to hit...before, they had an idea, but not an outline of events like they have now! It's just not worth it...

It's a shame all the way around. From the President boosting about the kill and turning it political (wasn't he not going to "spike the football" over it?), to the details and information leaked, to this soldier writing the book, to having his name published. All of it was unfortunate. But we live in the me generation. The look at what I've done, pat me on the back, give me a trophy, juice box, and orange slices mentality.

I agree. But these guys are the best of the best...literally, along with the Army's 1st SFOD-D (Delta Force), they are the most lethal warriors on earth. They're supposed to be above that, and nearly all are. Every group has a bad apple though, and it's too bad this guy is throwing away so many relationships with friends and really, his reputation, for a book and movie deal.

But to be honest, I can't feel bad for him. If he hadn't wrote the book, his identity wouldn't now be splashed all over the news and internet. And even if he had just done what he was supposed to do and got the book already vetted by the DOD/CIA, he would've had more protection against his identity being leaked. I think, ultimately, it's his own fault for now putting everything he loves at risk, no matter how big or small.

Also, another thing about this, he's releasing the book on 11 Sep...which is pretty cheesy if you ask me. Just release it on the OBL operation anniversary, this is just exploiting the sentimental value of 9/11. And to be honest, it pisses me off a bit.

What does that have to do with this discussion? To my knowledge, President Bush and his Administration didn't go on and on about one of TE most secretive units in the world's tactics, techniques and procedures.

I thought you're point about Fox News was valid. We have liberals acting like Fox is the conservative man's news bible or something. The fact is they are somewhat guilty of playing the ratings game as well as MSNBC, CNN, ABC, NBC and the rest. There are quite a few liberals in conservative clothing working at Fox. If you ask me the fact they would release his ID and his home town is despicable, and self serving. Some things are news worthy and some things should be kept quiet.

What would be any different in releasing somebody's true identity and whereabouts that was in the witness protection program? I don't have a lot of respect for the media these days. To me they've become a branch of the entertainment community. They have a sacred duty to report the truth, how many really do that?

Today, the release date of the book was moved up a week, to Sep 4. Good move I think...but retarded move to release on Sept 11 in the first place.

I for one would never buy or read this book. Not only has he now placed himself and his family in harms way, but I am sure information in the book sheds some light on how the Navy Seals conduct raids.

IMO, in my eyes, this guy isn't a true Navy Seal.

Ya gotta earn the right to say that about a SEAL who's spent years and years in some of the deepest **** imaginable, ya know, by being a SEAL yourself, which I doubt.

And I don't think he'll reveal anything more that the Administration did after the operation. Plus, the DOD and CIA are combing through it. That's why I'm buying the book.
