Welcome to 2013. it has amazed me all season how people have dismissed Colins based on 2012. congrats to HHS for excellence in their program, but make no mistake. This was no upset. Collins players were every bit as talented as HHS. Anyone that was there watching the game could tell u that. Collins plays a tough non conference schedule including many 6A Louisville area teams over the years Collins scored first, led 10-7 at half and at end of third...HHS looked tired to me trying to keep up with Collins offense...I have all the respect in the world for HHS. But this was no upset. This year Collins would be able to beat any team in state of KY.

I hope everyone will now agree that The 4A championship was played yesterday between Collins and HHS, not two weeks ago between HHS and CC. Congrats to both teams..they could both beat any other team in KY!

How did he lose his helmet? If a defender pulls his helmet off he stays in, any other scenario and you are out a play.

Congrats to Collins!!!! Maybe this will start a new streak for highlands. All the surrounding teams better keep players close as HHS will hit the ground running trying to reload.

BOWLING GREEN — Remember the Titans?

Who could ever forget them after Saturday night's Russell Athletic/KHSAA Class 4A football finals?

The Collins Titans halted Highlands' six-year run as state champion by upsetting the Bluebirds 37-34 with a stunning finish in front of 2,997 fans in Western Kentucky's L.T. Smith Stadium.

Highlands trailed 30-21 in the fourth quarter but rallied to go up 34-30 on Zach Harris' 1-yard run with 2:33 left.

But Collins, in only its fourth year of existence, didn't blink against the Bluebirds and the glow of their 22 state titles.

Titans quarterback Lawson Page directed a game-winning drive, or at least he got them to the Highlands' 9-yard line before he was sacked for a 3-yard loss.

Following a timeout, Page went back on the field but was told he had to sit out a play because his helmet had come off on the sack.

So with Collins facing fourth down at the 12, with no timeouts and only 13 seconds left on the clock, back-up quarterback Browning Becherer took center stage.

Becherer is Page's cousin and grandson of former Shelby County Coach Tom Becherer, who led the Rockets to a state title in 1987 and is now a Collins' assistant.

"I was nervous," Becherer said, "but I knew what I had to do. I had to do what my cousin Lawson would do."

Becherer took the shotgun snap and fired a bullet touchdown pass to Nathan Sames for the winning score with seven seconds left.

"I felt so confident in Browning," Sames said. "He's a great quarterback. Lawson's a great quarterback. Somebody had to make a play, and so the team made a play."

Collins Coach Jerry Lucas said after the confusion about Page having to leave the game, "I had literally three seconds to explain to Browning what we were running and what he had to do.

"Then he stepped back, looked the safety off, turned around and threw a strike for a touchdown. An unbelievable finish."

Highlands Coach Dale Mueller praised the Titans for being well-coached to handle a tough situation. "They had their second guy ready to come in and make a play."

Collins had a cast of heroes as it halted Highlands' 45-game winning streak against Kentucky competition.

Page hit on 15 of 23 passes for 178 yards and a TD. He ran 15 times for 108 yards.

Ryan Watkins ran 17 times for 121 yards and a score. Sames had six catches for 73 yards and two TDs. Deandre Farris had 107 yards rushing and receiving, and 2 TDs.

Senior linebacker Masai Whyte had 14 tackles, including 13 solo, to lead the Titans' defense.

Collins, which lost to Highlands 47-0 in last year's finals, had an aggressive attitude.

"We had to go after them all night long," Lucas said. "They're the second all-time winningest school in the country, with all those championships, and six in a row.

"We had to come out and keep hitting them no matter what happened."

Mueller's Bluebirds had won several high-scoring shootouts this year, but it couldn't pull out this one despite outgaining Collins 480 yards to 458.

Drew Houliston threw for 367 yards and 2 TDs. Evan Allen and Alex Veneman each had four catches for a combined 151 yards and two TDs. Zach Harris rushed for 103 yards and three TDs.

"I couldn't be more proud of them," Mueller said. "They're men you can count on. They're sad because they lost a high school football game. But in all reality, we embrace adversity.

"This isn't the worst thing that'll happen in their life. They'll come back from this."

Collins, meanwhile, will celebrate one of the biggest upsets in finals history.

Not that the Titans didn't think they could do it.

"We were confident we could slay the giant," Sames said.

Collins was the better team and congrats to them. However that was without a doubt the worst Highlands team I have seen in my 15 plus years of watching these state game. They were small and slow, horrible on defense, couldn't run the ball and still almost won the game. Congrats to Collins they battled the entire game and deserved the championship.

The unlikely arm of Browning Becherer powered Collins to a shocker in the Class 4A title game Saturday at Houchens-Smith Stadium.

Becherer, who had one pass the entire season before Saturday, fired a 12-yard strike to Nathan Sames with seven seconds left to lift the Titans over Highlands 37-34.

Forced into action after starting quarterback Lawson Page was forced to sit out one play after Page's helmet was knocked off, Becherer showed the poise of a veteran with a perfect pass to Sames in the end zone between two defenders.

"It worked out in my favor," Becherer said. "I was nervous, but I don't have time to think about it."

After losing to Highlands 47-0 in last year's title game, Collins racked up 458 yards to push past Highlands and snap the Bluebirds' string of six straight state titles. It was Highlands' first loss in a title game since losing to Boyle County in the 3A championship in 2003.

"This is so great for our community and our school," Collins coach Jerry Lucas said. "For our kids to not only win a state championship, but you are playing a perennial state powerhouse. I'm not just talking about the state of Kentucky. I'm talking about the second all-time winningest team in the country. For our kids to perform the way they did on this stage is just amazing to me.

"It's just amazing the way these kids stepped up the entire game. We just have an amazing group of kids. I thought they played their butts off the entire game."

Collins' winning drive came after a fourth-quarter rally from Highlands, which trailed 23-14 entering the fourth quarter.

Both teams scored on the opening possession and Collins (13-2) took the lead on a 27-yard field goal by Blanton Creque.

The Titans maintained the lead with a couple of big stops.

On the ensuing kickoff, Highlands' Jaylen Edwards broke free for a 47-yard gain, with WKU DeAndre Farris making a touchdown saving tackle at the Collins 47.

The Bluebirds moved to the 13 when quarterback Drew Houliston was leveled on a blind side hit by Landon Forrest. Houliston fumbled the ball, with Collins Zach Wilson recovering it at the 21 to preserve the 10-7 lead.

Highlands (13-2) surged ahead on opening drive of the third quarter, but Collins answered with a touchdown run by Farris and a TD catch by Sames to make the score 23-14 at the end of three quarters.

The teams exchanged scores in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter before Highlands scored on its next two possessions – taking the lead on Zach Harris' third touchdown run of the night with 2:33 left.

Collins quickly moved into Highlands territory but stalled at the 12 after quarterback Lawson Page was stopped for a five-yard loss on third down. Page started to go in the huddle after a timeout, but officials wouldn't allow him on the field because his helmet came off on the previous play.

That set the stage for the game winner from his cousin, Becherer.

"We had about three seconds to talk about it," Lucas said. "As he was running out I said, 'Browning take a three-step drop, look him off to to the right and come back to the backside post for a touchdown. It wasn't like he just threw it up. It was a strike to the back post. It was beautiful."

Page finished 15-for-23 for 178 yards passing and added 108 yards rushing.

Houliston threw for 367 yards and four touchdowns for Highlands.

Congrats to Collins on there first state championship

They played the better game. They made better calls.
You cant win them all... if anything I think this shows everyone how amazing it was that HHS won 6 straight.

This is not an excuse but......
I think Highlands had a hold call each drive. And the unsportsman like conduct call for jaw'n when both sides were jawn all game was a little much.
Im not sure if Collins got one flag. but hey that's part of the game.

As Gene Wilder would say, "wrong sir, Wrong! HHS is a great team and program, give them and Collins due credit. We have been reading all season about how talented this HHS was. They looked that way yesterday because Collins made them look that way.

You're absolutely right on all counts birdman. There were a couple of non-calls for holding on key plays that would have made a difference in the game. Everybody and their brother, including the referees, wanted to see Highlands go down last night.

We're still 40+ points better than Collins. They just played it right one game.

Yeah the offense was great this year I think that was what he was talking about. The D had 3 seniors that were good and then like all sophs, way young.... need to go back to fundamentals on D. wrap up, no arm tackles. I feel like they never had more than 5 players in the box. If they could have put some more pressure on the qb it would have helped.

Collins O got a lot of props before this game...but Collins D was really good...I am so shocked that Collins lost to SK?!?! what in the world happened in that game? I would guess if Collins played the SK they would win by 5 tds.

[QUOTE=sstack;1707856]Really, come on, everybody in the state had highlands picked to win this game not just highlands fans. Stop making it sound like it was just "arrogant" Highlands fans. Collins came out and played a great game, showed they improved from last year, pulled off one of biggest upsets in ky history and won the game. Congrads, enjoy the win and now learn to win with class. You know you are the king of the state when other teams/fans not involved in the game throw a party (like bob seger who has to celebrate through collins since his team can't beat them). The winning record HHS has and the game against collins last year is the reason ALL football fans around ky had HHS winning this
game. Maybe the fans have become "spoiled" like you said but who wouldn't with the string of success they have had. the players worked their butts off to
accomplish that string just like collins did this past offseason to accomplish this years championship.[/QUOT

I was not just directing that at solely Highlands fans, although it does apply to many. Yeah, I expected Highlands to win too, but look back at the prediction thread for this game. Despite people warning us that Collins is much improved from last year, many members kept discrediting these claims, saying it would still be a blowout. I'm not trying to take anything away from the talent level Highlands has. I would be crazy to try! Six straight appearances is unreal! All I'm saying is that the talent level at Collins deserved a little bit more respect and acknowledgment.

No you are not (in response to wideright saying they are 40 points better). You lost to a better team. Highlands defense has been bad and been exposed all year. Could have lost to a warren central team that desalles beat. Doesn't look good either for HHS in the next few seasons either seeing how their last three freshman teams have not been very good.

If they played again Collins would beat Simon Kenton, but SK had a very good team this year. Collins played a bunch of kids both ways in that game and I also believe that they were without one of their top receivers. Either way, this team improved leaps and bounds from that first game.

It doesn't matter, SK lost to a team that didn't even make the finals.......they finished 12-1, just like I predicted all season.

Another really cool story from this state championship:

Yesterday Martha Layne Collins (the person) turned 77 years old. For her birthday her own school won her a big golden state championship trophy. Happy Birthday to Mrs. Collins!

So what does Collins graduate? We know their back up QB is clutch!
Are all those playmakers gone next year?

They do lose a very talented class of 16 seniors. Lots of playmakers, especially on offense. However, they do return 3 offensive lineman and quite a bit on defense. They will have to rely on some young kids to step up to try to replace all of the talent they lose, but there is still talent in this program. From what I have heard, they have a very strong freshman class coming up.

Would Collins still be the favorite on that side of the bracket to go to state next year?
Lex Cath should be pretty scary next year.
