Default Old Gyms
I am hoping a few of you will be able to help me out. I'm working on a project about the history of the old gymnasiums in the mountains. I want to compile a list of the old gyms and locate photos of the ones that I can. Also, any memorable stories or individuals that I could interview would be awesome.

We are losing history everyday as schools close and memorabilia is tossed into the trash. I'm hoping to preserve as much history as possible, especially when it comes to old high school gyms in this instance.

Thanks in advance.

As far as the 14th goes the old hindman gym, Carr creek, Hazard memorial, and Cordia are the oldest gyms in the region still standing I think.

In the 15th Region, a few of the older gyms that are still standing:
Wayland High School
McDowell High School
Wheelwright High School

Betsy Layne High School is getting a new gym built this year. While their old gym, the D.W. Howard Fieldhouse or "The Dome" as its known around the 15th Region will still be used by Betsy Layne Elementary, its time hosting high school games has ended. Not sure if that is something you could use in your project or not.

I also read that while the former Sheldon Clark High School building is set to be demolished, they are keeping the gym and are hoping to use it for community events, so that could be another older gym for you to check out.

I would guess there are more older gyms around the 15th Region, but those are the ones that I am familiar with the most.

Old Belfry High School gym was finished in 1971.

The gym they used before that is currently the lunchroom at the middle school.

I watched some of my favorite basketball games ever at Feds Creek. The fans leaning over the floor from the upper deck, playing standing on tiptoes to throw the ball in bounds. And their players must have shot 70 plus percent every game I watched there. That was the golden age of HS basketball for me.

I had a chance to play at Feds Creek back in 1990-91. It was a great experience.

Wheelright gym is an old one in the 15th but we are still using it and Keith Smallwood would be a good interview. He's attended and coached a lot in the 15th also has a lot of great stories.

Gotta hit up the Wayland gym and talk to Jerry Fultz while you’re there. He’s got something special going on there.

The old Tiger Den is now the home court of Clay County Middle School, and was rededicated Spider Thurman Gymnasium. It’s in good shape. A great place to watch a game.

Played lots in the old Tiger Den and at OBI. As a kid, The Clay County church league played their games at OBI. I always liked the rims at OBI.
