Default Bluefield (WV) 17 Union 7
BLUEFIELD, W.Va. The Union College offense struggled to find any traction on a wet and slippery field as host Bluefield (Va.) scored a 17-7 Mid-South Conference (MSC) Appalachian victory on Saturday.
Playing in a downpour for the entire game, Union (3-5 overall, 1-3 MSC Appalachian) could not get its offense clicking, as it was limited to 239 total yards while Bluefield collected 327. The Rams (6-3 overall, 4-0 MSC Appalachian) collected 279 yards on the ground with three backs rushing for 90 or more yards.
The Bulldogs' passing game was not as potent as usual as Alex Bell (SR/Daytona Beach, Fla.) completed only 13-of-37 passes for 144 yards. Izayah Riettie (SO/Lakeland, Fla.) led the ground attack with 46 yards.
Bluefield took a 10-0 lead at the half and upped the margin to 17-0 on an Alex Martin 1-yard run with 10:15 left in the third quarter.
Union showed some life early in the fourth when Bell hooked up with Tyler Toombs (JR/Stone Mountain, Ga.) for an 80-yard scoring strike to make it a 10-point game with 14:40 to play in the game.
Toombs finished with 114 yards receiving on four catches, giving him five 100-yard receiving games on the year. The junior has 769 yards receiving on the year, ranking him sixth in program history. Shawn Kelly set the record with 899 yards in 2007. Toombs has racked up that yardage on only 23 receptions and has seven touchdowns.
On the ensuing kickoff, Bluefield's Ravion Hayden bobbled the pooch kick, and Kasaun Wall (SO/Dothan, Ala.) recovered it for Union on the Ram 37. However, Union went backs and ended up turning the ball over on downs on the Bluefield 47.
From that point on, Union did not get the ball past the Bluefield 46 in falling 17-7.
Despite giving up 279 yards rushing, the Bulldog defense came up with a pair of big red zone stops. In the first quarter, Bluefield has the ball first-and-goal on the Union 2 and failed to get it in the end zone, turning the ball over on downs at the 1. Early in the second, the Rams faced a third-and-3 at the Bulldog 17 when Justice Bishop (JR/Greensburg, Ky.) picked off a Cason Whitt pass, returning it to the Union 47.
Bishop finished with 10 tackles, while Jake Averhart (SR/Corner, Ala.) led the way with 13. Jerold Evans (SO/Micanopy, Fla.) and Justativous Robinson each added 12 and 11 stops, respectively.
