Default The Cumberlands 52 The Point University 19
Williamsburg, KY UC set numerous season highs as the Patriots would send off their senior class in style, pounding the Point University Skyhawks 52-19 at James H. Taylor, II Stadium on Saturday. The game was sponsored by Forcht Bank of Williamsburg. The Patriots would rush for a season high 285 yards while tallying a season high 519 yards of offense in the victory. The win ends the Patriots season at 6-4 overall and 3-3 in Mid-South Conference Appalachian Division play.

UC opened up the game in style as Kevin Claussen scampered for 56 yards and a first down deep into Point territory. The drive was capped by a nine yard TD run by Milton Shelton, the lone rushing TD in the game for UC, as they jumped out front early. The PAT from Joe Rose was good, giving the Patriots a 7-0 lead just under two minutes into the game. Point would respond on the following drive as Derek Ballard would find Tyrell Warren deep on a 49 yard TD pass. Thristen Jackson's point after was good, tying the game at 7 with 11:22 to play in the quarter.

The Patriots' ensuing drive was short and sweet. After a three yard run by Milton Shelton, Josiah Robbins would find a streaking Sheronsky Sloan down the seam for a 72 yard touchdown grab. Rose's PAT was good, pushing UC back out front 14-7 with over 10 minutes to play. The teams would trade scoreless possessions as the first quarter would come to an end with UC leading by seven.

UC's drive that ended the first would stall in the second quarter at the Point 13 yard line. Rose would come out for a 30 field goal attempt, but it would be blocked by the Skyhawks' Micah Oglesby and returned by Kendall Hillman all the way for a touchdown. The point after though would be blocked by Robbie Garvin, keeping UC out front 14-13 with 14:42 to play in the quarter.

Here is where UC would build a big lead over Point. On their next possession, the Patriots would put together a nine-play, 72 yard drive capped by a 27 yard TD grab from Robbins to Xavier Bryant-Long. Rose's point after was good, making it 21-13 UC. After a three-and-out, Point would punt it away. Trey Peters' 40 yard punt would be returnable by Robbie Repasz and he made it hurt, making numerous Skyhawks miss while taking it 76 yards to pay dirt, extending the Patriots' lead to 28-13.

On the ensuing kickoff, Nick Amaya would pooch kick to an open area down the left side as Cameron Baxley would recover the kick at the Point 30 yard line. Unfortunately, UC would come up empty-handed on the drive as Rose's 33 yard FG attempt would sail wide left. Point would again go three-and-out, but this time it was a bad snap over the head of the punter Peters as Storm Walker would recover the ball and walk into the end zone for another special teams TD for the Patriots. The point after was good, giving Cumberlands a 35-13 lead.

The Skyhawks would then put a successful drive together that took eight plays and covered 66 yards capped by a two yard TD run by Connor Williams. The two-point conversion attempt was no good as UC now led 35-19 with 1:49 to play in the half. UC's two minute offense proved effective on the next drive as Robbins would find Sloan for his second touchdown grab, this one from 32 yards out, to push UC back out to a 42-19 lead at the half.

In the third, Point would pick up a first down, but the drive would stall at midfield. Peters' punt would then sail out of bounds off the side of his foot for just 17 yards, giving UC the ball at their 30 yard line. Cumberlands would then put together one of their most impressive drives of the season. UC would put together a 14-play drive taking 6:05 off the clock that saw no plays for negative yards, 12 rushing attempts, and two complete passes to get to the Point 11 yard line. There, Joe Rose would tie the school record for field goals in a career with a 28 yard field goal, making it 45-19 Patriots with 6:43 to play in the quarter.

Point would go nowhere but backwards on their next drive. After an incomplete pass and a pass for a seven yard loss, Bellard's pass to Charles Ducksworth would be intercepted by Jaelon Benjamin at the UC 39 yard line with 5:38 left in the third. The Patriots would then go back to work on the ground with their next ten plays coming on rushes to end the quarter up 45-19 and UC with the ball on the Point eight yard line and facing a second a five.

On the first play from scrimmage in the fourth, Robbins would flip a beautiful shovel pass to Seph Burke for a five yard TD. Rose's PAT was good, making it 52-19 UC. Rose ends his career perfect on PATs, going 145-145 which puts him second all-time in the NAIA for most consecutive extra points made by kicking. The two teams would then trade possessions until time ran out, sending the Patriots out on a high note with a 52-19 victory.

Josiah Robbins would end the game 12-20 passing for 228 yards and four touchdowns. Milton Shelton rushed for a season high 160 yards on 27 carries with a touchdown while Kevin Claussen added 109 yards on the ground on 11 touches. This was the first game this season UC had multiple running backs rush for over 100 yards. Sheronsky Sloan would end the day with four receptions for 126 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Xavier Bryant-Long would chip in with three grabs for 50 yards and a TD while Seph Burke would haul in the final TD through the air on two catches for 12 yards.

Defensively, the Patriots were stellar. Murphy Hagen led the way for the Patriots with nine tackles including two sacks and four tackles for loss. Robbie Garvin added four tackles with two tackles for loss and a blocked PAT. The duo of Tyler Pendleton and Brad Montgomery pitched in eight total tackles including 1.5 tackles for loss and a pass breakup. UC allowed just 169 yards of total offense to a team that was averaging right at 300 yards per game.

The Patriots open their 2018 season on August 25th as they travel to Lakeland, Florida as they will take on the Fire of Southeastern University. Kickoff time is to be determined.
