Default Franklin-Simpson 2018
In looking back at some old posts on this site and other sites I think many fans and maybe coaches overlooked or underestimated how much Franklin-Simpson had either adjusted or improved in order to have a chance against JC in 2018. I read a post by a fan on here calling them the Kittens Lol. From what I read here is what they have returning. In 2018 Franklin-Simpson could be looking at another strong year and possibly return to the finals. They are returning 7 starters on offense with 4 of 5 offensive lineman and two 1,000 yard rushers. They return 6 starters on defense and from what some have posted on other sites if they are able to find a couple of linebackers they could be exceptional again next year. The game between JC and FS was one or maybe the only time I have seen Matney and company out smarted and out hit since his arrival at JC. That is not a knock on Matney or JC but just something I have not seen - the JC running game shut down like it was in the championship. Maybe others have but I have not. I was amazed at how their defensive line dominated the JC offensive line. The speed they had was and could be a real problem for JC if they meet again.

Franklin-Simpson will be very good again next year. They loose some very talented players, but have really good backup players with experience to fill those positions. FS has a excellent coaching staff that always is looking ahead and prepares these boys very well every year. I think FS strength will lie in it's OLINE. These boys are BIG and Hungry and will be even better next year. Keep your eye on #55 Jack Randolph, he will be their leader for this offense.
The key losses will be Saul Brady on both sides of the ball and 7 out of 11 starters on defense. Saul never came off the field and will be a huge hole to fill, but will open up playing time for some really good players coming up. Saul ran for over 1000 yards his last three years, but will be missed for his ability to seal the edge for the other backs probably more than anything. He was a leader on defense too, along with Cade Harvey another huge loss for the cats. Cade is mister defense and lead the team in tackles the last two years and was the coach on the field.
Coach Preston's teams are known for their defense and toughness and he will fill the voids and be right back in the finals next year. I hope we see another FS/JC rematch with the same outcome as this year. GO CATS!!!

Sometimes I think that's a sign of respect!! We get called the "Cubbies" all the time!

Some Key players that either started or played a significant amount for them this past season that will return are:

Offense: #10,55,2,9,54,56,62,68,12 and there could be others that I missed?

Defense: #10,4,8,56,6,52,12

I will see if i can get the state championship roster to get names and grades.

10-Tre Bass
55-Jack Randolph
2-Jevon Covington
9-Carlos McKinney
54-Aj Burr
56-Jathen Dover
6-Leo Stutsman
62-Dalton Hunter
68-Shawn Woods
12 Teddy Partinger
4-Connor Rogers
8-colin Preston
52-Tryvon Goodnight
They will loose one lineman, QB, and the wingback all were studs and will be missed dearly.
The defense loses a lot, but the coaching staff does a really good job at "Next man up mentality", but there are studs that will be missed not only for their play but their leadership.I fully expect them back in the finals.

That seems kind of like the way they were coming into this season. Lost a lot off of the 2016 squad in areas of leadership and athletes. I think the whole line was pretty much graduated in 2016. I would say they will struggle early like this season.

Yep... We lost our whole offensive line 2016, but many of these played several minutes on that State runner up team. If they get the defense figured out they will really good. Coach Preston is a defensive mastermind, I believe he will have them taking care of business. I believe we will see a FS-JC grudge match.

I certainly haven't watched a lot of teams play, I do radio for one team. But I watched the Finals and have never seen a player DOMINATE the line of scrimmage like Tryvon Goodnight did. If he can back that up in 2018, that young man will be playing D-1 football!

Treyvon doesn't know how good he is going to be. He hasn't even scratched the surface. He is strong and hungry and won't be denied.

Looking at the game #4 is a really good sophomore. I checked their stats and it looks like he must have been out for a while this year based on games listed for him playing. He was one of the best looking players on the field in the championship game. I agree on the Goodknight. He was a stud. Is he being recruited by anyone?

I havenít heard if Trayvon is being actively pursued yet. He will Be if he can take care of his class room. #4 Conner Rogers is an athlete. He missed most of the season due to injury. He will be a force if he can get healthy. Heís a great kid with a lot of ceiling.

Franklin Simpson returns quite a bit. How will their depth be? That seems to have been a strength the past couple of years. Have their lower levels been successful?

I would love to say yes, but the 2020-2021, classes were down in number, size and talent. This years team will have a lot of these returning players going both ways which makes a big differences. Coach Preston and his staff do a great job bringing players along and making them football players. We will see if they can do it again. If anyone can they will.

They always have some talent. I would guess that going to the state finals 2 years in a row and winning it this year might bring out more athletes/players. Wondering if their numbers are usually about where they are now. A friend of mine said they have had more talent on many teams than they have had lately. That could be a huge advantage for them in 4A if there is more talent walking those halls that decides to come out.

The number of wins the past three years have helped out in the elementary and Jr high numbers, but the leanness of the 2020, 2021 classes will affect us unless those guys in study hall decides to come out. Every school has those kids hidden in class, but that is another thing Doug Preston does, he is always looking for those kids that hasnít been out. A State title will help him in the swaying process. I fully expect FS to be in the finals again this year, but it gets lean after this year, if everything stays as it is for a few years.
