Default (15)Michigan 77 Nebraska 58
NEW YORK -- Junior Moritz Wagner posted a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds and senior Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman scored 21 points to lead the fifth-seeded University of Michigan men's basketball team to a 77-58 win over fourth-seeded Nebraska in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament on Friday (March 2) at Madison Square Garden.

With the win, Michigan advances to the semifinals for the third consecutive year and for the sixth time in the last eight years.

Senior Duncan Robinson added 16 points off the bench, which included four triples. Sophomore Zavier Simpson chipped in 12 points and six assists.

The Wolverines won the game behind a dominant defensive effort, holding Nebraska to just 30 percent shooting (16-of-53). After going cold from behind the arc in yesterday's win over Iowa, Michigan shot it much better today, going 11-of-23 (48 percent) from three-point range. The Wolverines beat Nebraska on the boards (41-34) and limited the Cornhuskers to just five assists.

Nebraska started hot, making four of its first five shots, but cooled off considerably after Michigan tightened the screws on defense. Wagner, who played only 16 minutes after he fouled out in yesterday's second-round win over Iowa, was energized early and scored the Wolverines' first eight points of the game. After trailing, 9-4, at the first media timeout, Michigan went on an 18-4 run, its defense not allowing a Nebraska field goal for a stretch of more than seven minutes.

The Wolverines led by as many as 18 points in the first half after a layup by Simpson, a wide-open dunk underneath the basket from Wagner and another triple from Robinson. The Cornhuskers switched to a zone and went on a 6-0 run to end the half and kept the game close thanks to their foul shooting (9-of-11 in the first half). Michigan maintained a 34-24 lead at the break.

After the teams began the second half trading baskets, Nebraska used a quick 5-0 spurt -- all on free throws -- to cut the lead to seven, the closest it would get the rest of the game. Michigan hit right back, going on a 10-2 run behind corner threes from Abdur-Rahkman and Robinson, and a sweet finish at the rim from Simpson. A crossover and step-back three from Abdur Rahkman made it a 16-point lead at 53-37 with 9:52 to play.

Nebraska went back to the zone, but the Wolverines kept picking it apart. A sweet post move from Wagner out of a double team, followed by consecutive threes from Robinson and Abdur-Rahkman extended the lead to 61-42.

The Cornhuskers got within 12 with 3:54 left, but four free throws by Simpson and another Wagner layup put Michigan up 18 to effectively end the game.

Awaiting in tomorrow's (March 3) semifinals matchup is top-seeded Michigan State, which defeated Wisconsin, 63-60, earlier in the day. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. on CBS. The Wolverines won the lone contest between the two schools, 82-72, back on Jan. 13 in East Lansing, Michigan.
