Default UPIKE 92 Shawnee State 89 (MSC Tourney)
PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Pikeville needed a 17-2 explosion in the final six minutes to knock off Shawnee State (Ohio) 92-89 in the opening game of the Mid-South Conference men's basketball tournament on Friday.

UPIKE (28-3), the top seed in the tournament, trailed No. 8 Shawnee State 82-73 with 5:46 left when senior Rze Culbreath completed a three-point play. He followed with a basket before sophomore Jordan Perry nailed a three from the right-wing to pull the Bears within one, 82-81, with 4:16 to play.

After a scoring lull that saw each team score only two points, Perry scored inside and sank a free throw with 1:51 left to put the Bears on top 86-84. After junior Jayvian Delacruz split a pair from the line, senior Darrion Leslie made it a two-possession game with 47 seconds left with a basket.

Culbreath sank one of two from the line with 38 seconds left to put the Bears on top 90-84.

The first half was a wild display of basketball action, as each team shot higher than 61 percent from the floor and missed only one free throw. When it ended, UPIKE held a 51-48 lead.

UPIKE led 61-56 with 14 minutes left when senior Jayllen Carter converted a three-point play. That began a 26-12 run that put Shawnee State on top 82-73 with less than six minutes left.

That's when the Bears took command.

Leslie, the co-player of the year in the league, had 16 points, nine rebounds and nine assists in the win. Delacruz, a first-team all-league pick, led five Bears in double figures with 18. They had three steals apiece in the win.

Perry finished with 17, while senior Rodney Hawkins followed with 15. Culbreath added 13.

Junior guard Chase Parsley, who had five points, dished out seven assists and added three steals.

Shawnee State (14-17) got 25 points and 13 rebounds from senior forward Frederick Moore to pace four players in double figures. Senior guard Matt Rhodes came off the bench and fired in six three-point shots in eight tries to finish with 24.

Carter had 19 points and five assists before fouling out late, while E.J. Onu, who was named both the freshman and defensive player of the year, had 14 points and six blocked shots.

The Bears will play in the semifinals at 2 p.m. ET on Saturday against No. 5-seed Campbellsville.
