This should have been the last game for Trinity. The only thing left to prove would be that they should be the ONLY undefeated team in 6A.

Dalyn Dawkins ran for 208 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries, and the Shamrocks won their 23rd straight game, in the Class 6A quarterfinals. Playing at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium for the second time this season, the outcome was almost identical. Trinity (11-0) beat the Tigers (8-4) 41-6 on Sept. 30. With so many weapons in its passing attack, Trinity High School’s rushing game often goes overlooked.

Dalyn Dawkins put it front and center Friday night.

The speedy 5-foot-8 junior carried for a career-high 226 yards and two touchdowns as the Shamrocks blitzed rival St. Xavier 42-6 in the Class 6-A, Region Two final at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium.

“He’s not overlooked by me,” Trinity coach Bob Beatty said. “He’s a fine, fine, fine young man, and he has some holes to run in. That offensive line did a great job.”

Dawkins nearly outgained the entire St. X team (247 total yards) and helped Trinity (12-0) advance to next week’s state semifinal at No. 13 Butler (11-2). The Bears won 31-24 in overtime at Henderson County on Friday.

The Shamrocks, No. 1 in The Courier-Journal’s Litkenhous Ratings and tops in four national rankings, are huge favorites to win their second straight state title and ninth in 11 years.

“This is really exciting, but we’re not finished yet,” Dawkins said. “We have to finish strong. We still have some more to go.”

Quarterback Travis Wright completed 15 of 27 passes for 138 yards and one touchdown and also ran for a score. Wide receiver Jackson Noe threw a TD pass on a trick play midway through the second quarter, and defensive end Jason Hatcher capped it with a 35-yard fumble return for a TD midway through the fourth.

The only bad news for the Shamrocks was an apparent knee injury to star wide receiver James Quick, who had four catches for 27 yards. He was helped off the field at the end of the game and had an ice pack on his left knee. Beatty said he didn’t know the severity of the injury.

Sophomore Charles Walker ran for 97 yards on 16 carries to lead the No. 4 Tigers (8-5), who have lost four in a row to Trinity.

“They tried so hard because they wanted it so bad, and they made some mistakes they didn’t make all year,” Tigers coach Mike Glaser said of his players. “But they played hard for 48 minutes, and that’s all I can ask of them.”

St. X actually had the momentum early, as Ryan Oliver picked off a Wright pass on Trinity’s opening series. The Tigers then drove to the Trinity 36-yard line before Alex Mattingly threw a wild pass on the run that was intercepted by Conner Hill
