Glasgow, Barren swimmers qualify for state
#1
BOWLING GREEN — The Barren County Trojans and the Glasgow Lady Scotties will be well represented later this month at the Kentucky High School Athletic Association State Swimming and Diving Championships at the University of Louisville.

The Barren County 4x100 relay team of Sam Kinslow, Collin Sparks, Austin Benedict and Caleb Rich finished ninth last weekend at the Region 1 Championship in Owensboro. The Trojans had a time of 3 minutes, 49.26 seconds, good enough to advance to the state meet.

Glasgow High School sprinter Meghan Taylor qualified for the state in two events, the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle. At Saturday’s regional championships, Taylor finished second in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.14 and third in the 100 freestyle with a time of 56.63.

“This is the first relay team we’ve ever qualified for the state championships so we’re excited about it,” said Barren County coach Steve Metzger. “To be ninth in the region and still qualify for the state meet, that means we swam pretty fast.”

“Everyone swam very well and we’re excited to see Meghan qualify for the state meet,” said Glasgow coach Lora Garrett. “Meghan didn’t surprise me. She really stepped it up on the second day of the region meet.”

The Barren County boys finished 15th at last weekend’s regional championship, while the Trojanettes were 16th overall. Glasgow finished 13th in the girls division. The state championships are scheduled for Feb. 23-24 at the University of Louisville.

“At the regional championship, we finished about where I thought we would,” said Metzger. “Several swimmers reached the bonus heats.”

Barren County’s Maria Metzger broke her own school record twice at the regional championship in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:09.6, good enough for 10th overall. She was 11th in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:13.12.

The Barren County 200 medley relay team of Anne Kinsman, Paige London, Maria Metzger and Kennedy Ludwig had a time of 2:14.64, which was about five seconds faster than its best time this season. Kinslow was eighth in the boys’ 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:09.36 and 12TH in the 200 individual medley. He completed that race in 2:17.61.

In addition to Taylor’s stellar performance, Glasgow also got a good effort from the girls’ 4x100 relay team. Stephanie Walton, Abby Ponder, Grayson Reynolds and Taylor swam a time of 4:24.10. Those same four swimmers also teamed up in the 200 medley relay to finish in a time of 2:18.48.

Reynolds also finished 11th in the 500 freestyle with a time of 6:05.20.
