Can Woodford County pull off one more big upset in the boys' 11th Region basketball tournament?
The unranked Yellowjackets, who have already knocked off No. 12 Lexington Catholic and No. 5 Madison Central, take on No. 3 Scott County in the region finals Tuesday night in EKU's McBrayer Arena.
Woodford County has won the region one time â in 1986 â in school history.
The Sweet Sixteen is familiar territory for Scott County. The Cardinals have been there a dozen times, and won two state titles (1998, 2007) under Coach Billy Hicks.
This will be the third time Scott County and Woodford County have met this season. The Cards won 76-67 on Jan. 9, and 71-52 on Jan. 21 in the finals of the Toyota Classic.
"Both were hard-fought games," Hicks said, "so we know this one's going to be a heck of a matchup."
Woodford County Coach Scott Hundley doesn't need a scouting report on the Cards. He played for Scott County and Hicks, and was named Mr. Basketball in his senior year (2000). He was also an assistant coach under Hicks.
Scott County (29-4) is led by senior standouts Isaiah Ivey and Tamron Manning.
Ivey, who signed with Gardner-Webb, is averaging 16.8 points and 5.3 rebounds. Manning, a Marshall signee, is averaging 15.6 points and 6.5 rebounds.
Woodford County (22-12) is led by seniors David Greenwell and Jay Johnson.
Greenwell is averaging 17.1 points and 5.4 rebounds. Johnson, a 6-foot-7 Tennessee Tech signee, missed the first half of the season recovering from knee surgery. Since returning, he's averaging 14.7 points and 8.1 rebounds. He looked like his old self against Madison Central, scoring 26 points on a variety of moves.
"Jay's starting to really get better, he's starting to feel it," Hundley said.
Hicks noticed Johnson's performance against Madison Central. "He played like he played last year," Hicks said. "Now they've got him back full swing. They were a load without him, and they're really a load with him."
The 11th Region champ advances to the PNC/KHSAA State Tournament next week. It will play the 1st Region representative on March 15 in Rupp Arena.
