Reed's homer, pitching power Kentucky to SEC tourney win
#1
HOOVER, Ala. — A.J. was more than OK for UK on Tuesday.

A.J. Reed threw 52⁄3 innings of shutout ball, and slugged a home run to lead Kentucky to a 2-0 victory over Mississippi in the opening game of the Southeastern Conference Baseball Tournament.

The win earns fourth-seeded UK (42-15) a day off Wednesday at Regions Park, home of the Class 2A Birmingham Barons. The Cats will play Thursday, facing either Arkansas, Mississippi State or top-seeded LSU.

Ninth-seeded Ole Miss (34-23), which has lost its last five games, will play Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. EDT. The Rebels will face the loser of Tuesday's Arkansas-Mississippi State game.

UK took two of three games from Ole Miss last month in Lexington.

Reed, a freshman from Terre Haute, Ind., gave up five singles and a walk, striking out three on Tuesday. The left-hander (5-2) was making his first start since April 10.

Ole Miss went with ace right-hander Bobby Wahl (6-3). He finished second in the SEC regular season with a 2.20 ERA.

At the plate, Reed got UK's first two hits — an infield single in the first inning and a solo home run that opened the scoring in the fourth.

Scoreless through 3½ innings, UK grabbed a 1-0 lead when Reed ripped a 2-0 pitch over the right-field wall.

His fourth homer of the season ended a string of eight consecutive batters retired by Wahl.

Reed also singled in the sixth and eighth innings and finished 4-for-4 at the plate.

He stranded Ole Miss runners at first and second in the first inning, and on the corners in the third.

The Rebels threatened again in the fifth. Andrew Mistone led off with a single and moved to second on Blake Newalu's bunt. But Reed gloved Tanner Mathis' comebacker and caught Mistone in a rundown, then got Alex Yarbrough to ground out.

In the sixth, things got scarier.

Matt Snyder led off with a single. One out later, a wild pickoff throw by Reed moved Snyder to second.

Auston Bousfield's single to center put runners on the corners.

First baseman Luke Maile fielded John Gatlin's grounder and was a step or two from the bag when he spotted Snyder breaking for the plate. Maile didn't step on first, but froze Snyder. By the time Snyder was tagged out, though, Bousfield advanced to third, Gatlin to second.

Taylor Rogers, normally UK's Friday night starter, was called on for his first relief appearance of the season.

He did the job, getting Preston Overbey to ground out to second.

Rogers gave up a two-out single in the seventh.

In the eighth, Snyder led off with his third single of the game.

He was erased on a strikeout/throwout double play. Rogers fanned Will Allen, and catcher Michael Williams fired to second baseman J.T. Riddle in plenty of time to nail Snyder.
