Specifically how do you guy decide how to exchange gifts? Do you play bad Santa, draw names, buy for everyone or just forego the holiday. I ask because if I have to deal with some extended family members again I'm going to turn completely against Christmas. I already dread the holiday.

I can relate....my family and wife's family is so dispersed and dysfunctional that holidays are a nightmare trying to coordinate everything and having to deal with family members you would rather not see...

With that being said as far as gifts, we buy for our children and parents. The kids then draw names to buy for each other. A time is set for when Christmas is celebrated and if you can make it then great, if not, then maybe next year.

^Agreed...we do the same thing...have the crazy extended family bought presents for you in the past? what's the expectation if any? if not, don't sweat it and if you get caught off guard and they give you a present/s, have cash and a card/s ready as a fallback.

You can always buy lunch or dinner if need be.

The problem I have is if someone randomly buys a joint gift for my wife and I they expect something in return. And if the gift we receive is a recycled cocoa mug set then I don't feel inclined to do anything. Personally I would rather nobody on my wife's side get us any kind of present. Just get together and hang out would be great for me. My side of the family usually gets a little more expensive gifts but once again I'd rather get together than exchange gifts. I wish we could just buy for the kids.

But maybe it's just me.

We always have a spread when we open gifts. The number of my family members have decreased in recent years, and extended family members live so far away that we never get together. So about 14 of us will come together at some point in time, eat well, exchange gifts and hang out. I love it! Wouldn't change anything. We may eat Christmas dinner anywhere from Dec 24 - 27th. The date of the celebration has never meant very much to me, as long as we have the dinner!!
I have family in California that spend Thanksgiving and Christmas feeding the homeless in shelters and celebrate privately on another day. This is about the only thing that they are involved with to which I can relate! LOL

Crazy family members do not bring gifts. The expectation is that only kids and grandparents get gifts. I only get gifts from my Parents and Mother-in-law.

If we decided to exchange gifts at the adult level, pretty sure I would end up with an outdated NASCAR hat that you buy at a gas station.
