Strieby, Shelby Taken on First Day of MLB Draft

UK Draftees LEXINGTON – Juniors Ryan Strieby and John Shelby became the highest drafted duo from the University of Kentucky since 1994 on Tuesday when both went in the first five rounds of the Major League Baseball Draft.

Strieby, the Southeastern Conference Player of the Year and a first-team All-American, was taken first in the fourth round by the Detroit Tigers, becoming the highest Wildcat drafted since Joe Blanton was a first-round choice in 2002.

Strieby led Kentucky in nearly every offensive category during the year while setting a school record by driving in 77 runs. He led the league in RBIs, doubles, on-base percentage and slugging percentage.

Shelby, a second-team All-SEC second baseman, was taken off the board one round later by the defending World Series Champion Chicago White Sox.

Shelby, a five-tool player, is the only player in school history with at least 35 home runs and 35 stolen bases in a career after hitting 18 dingers and swiping 12 bags this year.

The last time two UK players went in the first five rounds was 1994 when Jeff Abbott and Eddie Brooks accomplished the feat.

Kentucky also had one signee drafted as the top prospect in Canada, Kyle Orr, was taken one pick after Strieby by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
