After narrowly avoiding relegation from La Liga in the last campaign, Almeria fans will likely be pretty pleased with a start to this season that has garnered nine points from eight games and an early season four point buffer above the drop zone. What they are unlikely to be happy with however, is the Andalusian side’s form in their own stadium which has been less than impressive. In their four home games so far this year Francisco Rodriguez’s side have managed just three draws and a defeat, and if they are to stay clear of a relegation battle that home form will need to improve quickly. There would be no better time for the red and whites to record that first home win of the season (12/5 with Titanbet) than at the weekend against Athletic club and Bilbao’s form is such that they may also not get a better opportunity to do so. If Almeria can grab all three points on Saturday, they will stretch their gap over their weekend opponents to a not inconsiderable seven points, which could prove crucial by the end of the season.

If you could roll the clock back just a few months you would find an Athletic Bilbao club basking in an atmosphere of celebration and optimism. They had a season ahead of them where they would be Champions League football after a wonderful fourth place finish last campaign, and they would be doing so in their brand new stadium. Bring the clock back to the present day however, and the picture is quite different. Ernesto Valverde’s side are indeed still playing in Europe’s premier club competition but doing so has seemed to have a near disastrous effect on their domestic form.Bilbao have managed just five points from their first eight games and occupy the ever precarious 17th position in La Liga, being outside of the relegation zone by dint of only their better goal difference than Elche and Levante.

Real Madrid visited Anfield in midweek and walked away wit a comfortable 3-0 victory after Benzema (2) and Ronaldo picked up the goals that defeated Liverpool. Real Madrid have now won their last 8 games in a row which is very impressive. A win on Saturday would put Madrid within a point of league leaders Barca and could be a pivotal game in the season which gives them the extra momentum they require to go on and lift the La Liga trophy come next May.

Barcelona welcomed a trip from Ajax in midweek and comfortably beat the dutch side 3-1. Barca are top of the La Liga and currently hold a four point gap over Real Madrid who are in 3rd place, if Barca are victorious they have the chance to extend their lead to 7 points. With the addition of Luis Suarez (who is at last available after his four month suspension) Barcelona will have even more firepower up front as Neymar and Messi have already netted 19 goals between themselves this season, 15 of which came in the La Liga.
