By mailing letters, Kentucky recruiting football fans the same way it does players
#1
Some of the University of Kentucky’s most prized football recruits won’t ever suit up for the Wildcats.

Mark Stoops, however, wants a stronger 12th Man at Commonwealth Stadium heading into his first season as head coach.

UK’s athletic department is in the process of recruiting fans the same way Stoops has feverishly lured players to the Wildcats’ 2014 class, currently ranked No. 4 at Rivals.com, by signing and mailing letters to season ticketholders who haven’t yet renewed as well as young alumni.

UK officials got word Tuesday that the first of the 10,000 cards sent — each labeled with five signatures — had arrived.

“They basically targeted 5,000 people, and those 5,000 people got one, five, 10, 20 or a few got even 50 cards,” said DeWayne Peevy, UK’s deputy director of athletics. “We sent Christmas cards from coach Stoops’ family back in December to our current season ticketholders, and it was a big hit.

“We basically wanted to capitalize off the momentum that our staff in recruiting has done with the mass mailing to recruits.”

Multiple envelopes have arrived at a single address this week carrying messages such as Fill CWS, Attack Every Day and Build This Program — just like those sent off to the four- and five-star prospects Stoops wants on the field.

Off it, UK hopes to build on the announced 50,831 fans that showed at the Blue/White Game in the spring. That number stood greater than the average attendance of 49,691 during former coach Joker Phillips’ final season.

As of Monday, UK had sold just over 43,000 season tickets, Peevy said, plus more than 3,000 in student ticket sales. About 36,000 had been sold this time last year.

Staffers from the ticket office, K-fund, marketing and media relations inked messages to the letters along with a sampling of UK coaches.

“We did two two-hour signing sessions letting everybody design the cards to the fans,” Peevy said.

The Wildcats’ non-conference home slate opens at noon Sept. 7 against Miami (Ohio), then continues Sept. 14 against the University of Louisville and Nov. 2 against Alabama State. Southeastern Conference opponents visiting Commonwealth Stadium this year include Florida, Alabama, Missouri and Tennessee.

For those not wanting seats for the whole season, UK’s single-game tickets go on sale at 9 a.m. on Aug. 9.
