Belfry Pirates History
#1
Need a little help, Pirate fans. Trying to compile a list of the all state players, first and foremost. I took a video at the complex a couple of years back, but parts of it are blurry so I missed a few (like 3 or 4) names, and several years and positions. I also may have read some stuff wrong. I'm going to post my list, and you guys tell me if you can fill in the names I missed, positions, or years. Also, as I said I can't see the years wonderfully but it looks to me like we don't have anyone from 2005, is that correct? Seems like a state semifinalist would have at least one.

Thank you sir!

The ? on the list are plaques on the video in which I can't read. So the first two ?'s on the list are between the plaques for Floyd Hatfield and Greg Varney on the wall at the complex at Belfry High.

One of the question marks between Francisco and Tim Bob Hatfield would be Brad Barker (all-state kicker). Also, Ben Trout was all-state O-line and Jimmy Bevins was a RB/DB, but I don't know for which one he received all-state honors.

Prior to '79 I'm of no help, but I'm sure Ireland Smith would be glad to tell you and I'd bet a buffalo nickel he knows.
#6
To pass a little time til season, maybe some Belfry fans can provide us a run down on several different games from throughout the years and what they've loved about them, even if they were recent. Some games may have a special meaning to someone, such as myself with the 2010 Somerset and Mason County games

I'd love to hear about the 79 Highlands game, as well as some of the 90s games. I don't know much about the teams of the 90s
#7
Surely Matt Maynard would be on the list. IMO...the best athlete to ever go through Belfry. I'm almost positive he made allstate.

Crossbones Wrote:Surely Matt Maynard would be on the list. IMO...the best athlete to ever go through Belfry. I'm almost positive he made allstate.

I am not sure he did actually...at least not first-string.

Maynard was very underrated and had the dubious honor of ONLY being the feature back his Senior season. He also came along the year after the Back to Back teams when Belfry was a little "down" (though they were a false start potentially from beating Russell and 3-peating). Matt also was transitioning from SE and learning HB on the fly and really didn't develop into a dominate player until late in the season. If I recall I think he only had a handful over 1000 yards and Belfry had three difeerent backs hit the 1000 yard mark that year.

If Matt were a Junior (which if I recall he was actually very young for his grade anyways) then there is no doubt he would have been one of the best backs in the State in 2006 and an All-Stater.

There are a lot of great ones that didn't make all-state due to the success of the team, or lack there of.

The word didn't get out about Maynard until it was too late, but he's as good as any on the list.

Pirate fans, relooking at the video one of my "?" around David Pinson and Tim Hatfield looks like it says Brad something... Maybe Barker? Any ideas? Looks like #88 on the jersey located BETWEEN Tony Baer and Tim Hatfield on the wall

Should be the result of every playoff game in school history... maybe some errors I'm not sure. Anyone wanna revise? I didn't think so.. LOL!

Belfy has a storied history and Coach Haywood is a class act!

Ole MrPikeCentral got me in a statistical mood. Here's some numbers for ya.

All time playoff record: 78-35, since 2003: 41-8 in the playoffs. No road playoff losses since 2005. Longest playoff win streak: 13 games (2003-2005), longest losing streak: 3 (1968-1976, 1986-1989) Most played playoff opponent: Breathitt County, 5-4 against them in the postseason in school history.

If I'm correct, the longest winning streak in team history is 14 (2007) and the current winning streak is 5.

I don't hate PC at all! I don't like John Chapman, but he's gone. I like to pick on you a little bit because of the "rivalry" (though a one sided one) but that's all.

What about Harold Borders? He was the starting QB at EKU for 2 years under coach kid, believe he played in the mid-70's.
#20
On my all state list, I am down to only one. The one proceeding Mike Scott is Chris Ratliff, and the one preceding Greg Varney is Peyton Taylor... the ONLY one left to confirm is located on the complex wall between Peyton Taylor and Floyd Hatfield... The first name looks to be too short to be Harold Borders. I remember him though, his dad cut my hair most of my life.

I have FINALLY done it. Finished my list, every all-state player listed on the complex wall at Belfry High School. I don't have all of their years or positions, but I finally have all the names.

Bumping this to the top...

Should have some significant updates to it soon.

To the best of my ability and information on hand, I have filled in the gaps all the way back to 1945 for every Belfry player to make the All-State team. Just need to compile and put in a condensed form.

A few key observations from my research:
1. Rick Kestner was a stud! I always knew he played at UK and went to the NFL, but at the time he set a record for receiving TD's in the State of KY and was a two-time 1st Teamer. He finished 3rd in the Player of the Year voting for the entire State and was also selected to the All-Southern team which was equivalent to like an All-American Team back in the day.

2. Floyd Hatfield was also kind of a rock star. He was a year behind Kestner but was his QB and had his own great legacy. Never confirmed, but looks like he set the State Record at the time for most TD passes.

3. Mark Cook and Grayson Cook not only both had All-State 1st Team honors during their careers, they also were the first Father-Son duo to be named All-State in multiple seasons individually.

4. Belfry has surprisingly had a ton of PK's and P's to make All-State in some capacity.
Chris Wingold
Brian Scott
Brad Barker
Joey Ramey
Glenn Earnest
Garrett Duty
Devin Wellman
Austin Woolum
Grayson Cook

5. Belfry has had four players to make an All-State in some capacity three straight years: Cole Bentley, Rayquan Horton, Derek Wellman, and Grayson Cook. Bentley and Horton have the distinction of being the only two to make it three straight years being listed on a Team specifically and not as an Honorable Mention.
