Cumberland 33 Georgetown 26
#1
Georgetown College football had eight total fumbles in 2014, losing just four. Saturday in the Tigers (0-1) season-opener at Cumberland University (1-0), they fumbled twice and both were recovered by the Bulldogs. The second one was the dagger in a 33-26 loss in Lebanon, Tenn.
GC was driving with 7:57 left when Cumberland recovered Zach Harris' fumble on the Bulldogs' 23-yard line. With a 27-26 lead, CU ran three straight rushing plays, the third resulted in a 72-yard touchdown that all but sealed it for the home team. A missed point after attempt kept it within seven and each team would possess it three more times, but Cumberland's defense stonewalled the Tigers each time.
Georgetown's offense was running on all cylinders in the first half, scoring on its first three possessions for a 17-7 lead.
GC quarterback Ozzie Mann was hitting his targets early, and he finished 28-for-49 for 298 yards and two touchdowns. Terry Johnson led the Tigers rushing with 78 yards on seven carries. JJ Jude had 73 yards on 11 carries. Johnson had a receiving touchdown and a rushing touchdown.
However, the Bulldogs responded with a score just before halftime to cut the deficit to three and took the opening possession of the second half for a touchdown. It was the first lead of the game for CU.
The Tigers roared right back, driving to Cumberland's one-yard line. Then the first fumble occurred. Ozzie Mann mishandled the snap and the Bulldogs recovered.
Georgetown's defense returned the favor two plays later picking off a Joseph Rushin pass. The Tigers scored to go back on top 24-21. That lead did not last long. Just more than a minute later, Justin Snyder hit Brandon Mallory for a 32-yard strike for the winning score.
GC's defense made it interesting one more time when Josh Depp's punt pinned the home team on its own one-yard line. The Tigers needed just two plays from scrimmage to push the Bulldogs backwards and pick up a safety. That was as close as the Orange & Black got.
In the final two minutes, GC drove down the field for its best offensive possession after the fumble. A screen pass to Johnson put the Tigers on CU's 35, however, the sixth sack of the day pushed them back. Two long passes fell incomplete and with just one time out left, Georgetown could no longer stop Cumberland from taking a knee to kill the clock.
Georgetown returns to action 1:30 pm Saturday hosting Lindsey Wilson College (1-0) on White Out Lung Cancer in honor of Craig Mullins.
