Pulaski’s Jake Johnson named Class 5A Player of Year

With the high school season concluded, the post-season awards have been rolling in for two local Class 5A football programs.

In the recent Class 5A All-District 7 Team nominations, two locals were named to the top district slots and 15 other players were named to the All-District squad.

Pulaski County High School three-time All-State receiver Jake Johnson was named as the District 7 Player of the Year. Johnson set three state receiving records this season en route to guiding the Maroons to their fourth straight Class 5A State Finals.

Johnson was also named as the Class 5A Football Player of the Year. Johnson tallied 1,701 receiving yards on 139 catches and amassed 25 touchdowns his senior season.

Southwestern coach Larry French was named Class 5A District 7 Coach of the Year.

French led the Warriors to a 9-4 mark this season, which included a district title win over Class 5A state runner-ups Pulaski County and a region championship appearance.

Southwestern was awarded eight players to the All-District Team.

The Warriors All-District Team members were senior defensive tackle Austin Daulton, senior defensive tackle Floyd Fannin, junior running back Patric Edwards, senior linebacker William Lemmon, senior quarterback Brandon Pruitt, senior center Peyton Phelps, senior kicker William Avina and sophomore wide receiver/kick returner J.P. Vaught.

Pulaski, who finished runner-up in District 7, rallied to win their fourth straight regional and semi-state titles.

Pulaski also earned eight players to the All-District Team, including Player of the Year senior receiver Jake Johnson.

Other Maroons named to the District 7 Team were senior linebacker Ricky Maxey, senior linebacker Jackson Mobley, senior safety Jake New, senior center Cullen Cox, junior defensive end Zach Ferris, senior nose tackle Daniel Mink and sophomore quarterback Wiley Cain.
